Press Digest – Chinese tycoons upgrade security after abduction fears
Last updated on 16 February 2015 – 09:23pm
PETALING JAYA: Following media reports that they are the targets of Islamic State (IS) which is after ransom money to finance terror activities, Chinese tycoons in Malaysia are taking no chances.
Apart from beefing up security for themselves and their family members, some have become very “secretive” about their movement; keeping a very low profile by reducing social engagement to the minimum and changing their routine and routes on the road, China Press reported today.
…
Several of them, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the daily that they are taking the minister’s remark seriously and do not want to take chances although it means having to reduce their personal space and limiting their social activities.
“As businessmen, we have to entertain a lot (of customers and guests), now we have to be very selective and be very particular about the time and venues of our social engagements, avoiding them whenever possible especially those held at night.
…
Some tycoons interviewed also said they are changing their work routine, including the time to leave house and office and using different routes.
They also indicated that they will resort to working from home and use the internet to contact clients if the situation warrants it.
Asked if they would hold Chinese New Year open houses, some of them said they would wait and see but would maintain a low profile as much as possible for the time being.

Asked if he is worried about his safety, Pheng, President of the Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia(Hua Zong) said, “The threats posed by IS cannot be mitigated by strengthening personal security alone; it has to be tackled at the government level. The government has the responsibility to ensure the safety of the people.”
Pheng said the police should also foster closer cooperation with Interpol on countering IS, to allay the public’s fear.

Press Digest – Creating panic with IS kidnap plot
Last updated on 15 February 2015 – 08:36pm
PETALING JAYA: The disclosure by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that Islamic State (IS) is plotting to kidnap wealthy Malaysian Chinese will cause panic in the corporate world, and this is detrimental to the country’s economic well-being, says Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia (Hua Zong).
Hua Zong president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah says the Home Ministry should have conveyed this message to those it regards as IS targets behind closed doors, instead of through the media, which will only create fear among business tycoons, Sin Chew Daily reported today.
“At a time when businessmen are already hard-hit by the economic slowdown, the minister’s remarks will only create panic and keep potential investors at bay, further affecting the economy.”
Pheng, who is Kinsteel Berhad managing director, added Ahmad Zahid should not have emphasised that the rich people in Malaysia are not Malay, as there are tycoons from all races in the country.
…
His sentiment was echoed by Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia vice-president Tan Sri Lam Kam Seng, who said it is the duty of the police to protect the people.
He said many tycoons hire bodyguards for peace of mind but he believed an effective police force is the key to security.

Perhaps ISIS would go for these rich kids of Malaysia since they advertise themselves and are exposed and poorly protected, unlike the rich tycoons with their private bodyguards…especially when Chinese tycoons are reportedly keeping a low profile and increasing their ‘protective shield’.

Zahidi: Isis planning to kidnap rich tycoons
Anyone who is wealthy is considered a potential target, most of them are not Malays, says the home minister.
KUALA LUMPUR: Indirectly referring to the Chinese community, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the militant group Isis is planning to kidnap rich Malaysians for ransom to fund their activities based on intellegence reports received.
Zahid said this in a special interview with Chinese dailies – Sin Chew Daily, China Press, Nanyang Siang Pau, Oriental Daily and Guang Ming Daily.
He said such plots were being planned and the ministry was trying to monitor and investigate the movements of the group.
Zahid said the police were trying to determine who are on the kidnap list.
“Anyone who is rich is considered a potential target for Isis, and in Malaysia, most of them are not Malays.
“As of now, we can only affirm that they have already targeted some of these people. We do not know who but we will do our best in protecting these potential victims,” the Sin Chew daily quoted him as saying.
