SELFIES, which have become a global sensation in the last decade or so, have remarkably killed five times more people than shark attacks.
And the death toll has crept up incrementally each year as smartphones become more sophisticated and selfie-sticks increase the range at which people can snap themselves, prompting them to take bigger risks for the perfect shot.
Between Oct 2011 and Nov 2017, at least 259 people died taking selfies around the globe, according to India’s Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, compared to just 50 people killed by sharks in the same period.
The report was, coincidentally, published a day after a 21-year old US student, Jordan Lindsey from of Torrance, California, was fatally attacked by three sharks as she snorkelled in the Bahamas.
While women take the most selfies, young men, who are more prone to take risks, make up three quarters of the selfie deaths – in drownings, crashes, falls or shooting accidents.
India, with a population of more than 1.3 billion and 800 million cell phones, holds the record for the number of people dying in the act of photographing themselves, with 159 recorded so far.
That is more than half of the global total – and a testament of sorts to the nation’s love of group photos and its youthful population.
India has seen selfie-snapping groups of youths die when they were hit by a train or drowning when their boat sank at the moment they were clicking the shutter.
The situation has become so dire that India has set up ‘no selfie’ zones – 16 of them in the city of Mumbai alone.
The country came in far ahead of Russia (16 deaths), the United States (14) and Pakistan.
In Russia, people have fallen from bridges and high-rise buildings, shot themselves or even died while handling a land mine. Police issued a guide to ‘selfies without danger’ in 2015.
In the United States, most of those involved in selfie deaths fatally shot themselves while seeking the perfect pose. A number of people have fallen to their deaths at the Grand Canyon.

The Height of Stupid Selfies!
Their photo was taken as they made their getaway during a robbery. The clothes they wore helped the police track them down. Ipoh city police chief ACP Sum Chang Keong said they tracked them down from the video posting by identifying their helmets and shoes used during the incidents.
The video clip showed them on a motorcycle going around the city.

NEW DELHI (AFP) – An Indian teenager accidently shot himself in the head with his father’s gun while trying to take a “selfie”, the police said on Sunday (May 1), the latest in a series of such accidents.
The 15-year-old is being treated in hospital at Pathankot in Punjab state and is expected to survive, said the city’s deputy police superintendent Manoj Kumar.
The accident happened on Friday evening when the schoolboy was playing at home with the licensed revolver, which is normally kept in a wardrobe, Mr Kumar told AFP.
“The boy’s father and family said that he was trying to take a selfie with his gun,” he said.
“We will speak to the boy when he is declared medically fit. We think that part of the blame obviously goes to the father for not keeping his loaded gun under lock and key at their home.”

NILAI — A youth was killed after he was hit by a Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) commuter train this morning (Dec 19).
A report from Bernama news agency said the incident happened in Nilai, a town located in Negeri Sembilan at around 11am.
The victim, identified as A Renishkumar, 20, was a contract worker cutting grass in the area along the KTMB route, the report said.
Upon completing his task, the youth was reported to have stood on the railway tracks to take a photograph as proof to his employer that his job was done.

The rope he used to fasten himself failed. Most of the selfies found on his Instagram show a ton of dangerous, high risk behavior, reports Asiantown.

WASHINGTON, Sept 23 — More people around the world have died while taking selfies than from shark attacks this year, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported citing media reports.
So far this year, at least 12 people have been killed in selfie-related incidents worldwide compared to eight from shark attacks.
Recently a 66-year-old Japanese tourist died, and his travel companion was injured, after falling down the stairs while attempting to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal.
Four of the selfie deaths this year were caused by falling.
The next leading cause of deaths involved being hit or injured by trains, either because the individual was trying to get a photo with a train, or because the photo they wanted involved getting on dangerous equipment, Mashable reported.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old boy in the US died after accidentally shooting himself in the throat while taking selfies with a loaded gun.
In contrast, 74 unprovoked shark attacks have occurred this year, by the count of the Global Shark Attack File. Eight of them were fatal.

The top suspect in the beheading of a businessman that French authorities are calling a terrorist attack took a “selfie” photo with the slain victim and sent the image via WhatsApp to a Canadian mobile phone number, officials said Saturday.
French investigators were working to determine the recipient’s identity, but weren’t able to immediately confirm media reports that it was an unspecified person now in Syria, where the radical Islamic State group has seized territory, the security officials said.
The revelation added a macabre twist to an investigation that has not turned up a solid link to radical or foreign groups, but has revived concerns about terrorism in France less than six months after deadly attacks in the Paris area.
Top suspect Yassine Salhi, a truck driver with a history of radical Islamic ties, as well as his sister and wife remained in police custody in the city of Lyon, a day after he allegedly crashed a truck into a U.S.-owned chemical warehouse and hung his employer’s severed head on a factory gate, officials said.
One of the officials said the selfie was forwarded via WhatsApp, the globally popular instant messaging system owned by Facebook, to a phone number in Canada. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

MOSCOW, May 22 — A young Russian woman accidentally shot herself in the head with a pistol while posing for a selfie, Russian news agencies reported today, citing police.
The 21-year-old found a 9mm handgun left behind by a security guard at her Moscow office and decided to pose for a photograph holding it, a police spokesman told Interfax news agency.
While taking a selfie with one hand, she accidentally pressed the gun’s trigger, shooting herself in the temple at close range.
The incident which happened yesterday but was confirmed by police today, led to the woman being hospitalised in a Moscow clinic.
The victim was in a “serious condition” today, a spokeswoman for Moscow’s Sklifosovsky hospital told RIA Novosti state news agency.

21-year-old Mohamed Aslam reportedly fell off a cliff while trying to take a selfie.
SINGAPORE – An attempt to take a selfie in Bali proved fatal for a 21-year-old Singaporean who was on holiday with eight friends.
According to Indonesian media reports, Mr Mohamed Aslam tried to take a selfie on a cliff at Sandi Bay Beach on Nusa Lembongan Island on Thursday (May 21). He lost his footing after he was hit by a wave, the Nusa Penida Police chief was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post.
He fell off the 2m high cliff into the sea, and apparently could not swim, the police chief added. His body was found at a depth of 5m.

Isaac Martinez, 20, who works at Bistro 13 restaurant in Mesa, Arizona in the United States was approached by a man who forced him to hand over the keys to his car. When the catering student refused to do so, the man allegedly shot him. Martinez fell to the ground and the suspect managed to get away with the car. The Ministry of Culture stepped in to address the trend of underboob selfies this morning by threatening to arrest the women taking them.
The same people who prosecuted three girls for dancing topless during Songkran in 2011 before quietly removing similar imagery from its web site has warned Thai ladies to refrain from the “Western” underboob selfie trend because the boobs are considered their “private parts,” and whoever exposes them are breaking the law, Morning News reported.

This story is a strange one, but also perhaps a historical first: Maxwell Morton is a 16-year-old from Pennsylvania who was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after he took a Snapchat selfie with the dead body of his victim.
While visiting a classmate on Wednesday, Morton — for reasons as yet unknown — brought along a 9mm handgun and shot his classmate, 16-year-old Ryan Mangan, in the face, killing him instantly. What Morton did next is baffling. He posed for a selfie with the victim’s body and then sent the picture to another friend via Snapchat. Most people know that Snapchat pics disappear shortly after they are sent, but there are plenty of apps that allow Snapchats to be saved, and the recipient of the macabre photo saved it and sent it to cops. The Snapchat murderer confessed after cops found the gun he used and Maxwell Morton will be tried as an adult for 1st degree murder. Friends of Ryan Mangan say he was a well-liked happy, funny teenager and they cannot imagine why anyone want to harm him. —

That mom did the right thing and called the cops. The photo was around long enough for the police to download.
