PM says Malaysians happy with Putrajaya austerity measures

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 — Malaysians have responded well to Putrajaya’s cost-cutting measures, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

Najib also said on his Facebook page that other government spending cuts will soon be announced, amid criticism from political analysts who say that the 11 austerity measures recently announced were not enough to cut waste and to appease the unhappy general public.

Netizens pan Najib’s cost saving measures on Facebook

BY EILEEN NG
January 01, 2014

Malaysians bracing themselves for a challenging 2014 poured cold water over Putrajaya’s 11 austerity measures posted on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Facebook page.

Netizens made known to Najib that they are unconvinced by Putrajaya’s cost-cutting measures to practice more prudent spending in the new year, with many lamenting over price hikes of goods and services.

Miqatsum Damha Mazaz took Putrjaya to task, saying that it is ministers that should start the ball rolling by implementing cost-cutting measures and austerity drives instead of squeezing the people.

“Datuk Seri Najib has to find alternative ways instead of raising this and that,” he said.

In his posting which attracted 11 Likes, Lim Chze Hong described the austerity measures as “11 jokes for 2014”, while Hasrin Hamdan expressed his scepticism by saying it looked as though the moves are lies and does not seemed to generate any savings.

Fauzan Samsudin suggested sterner measures are needed including eradicating the allowances of all ministers, members of parliament, assemblymen and advisers with ministerial status.

Adrian Soon said these were just empty promises and if Najib was really serious in keeping his pledges, then he should have realised the promises made in the Barisan Nasional election manifesto.

“Looks like 2014 Promises are also lies,” he said.

Discontent over living costs floods PM’s Facebook
  • 3:37PM Dec 30, 2013

Disgruntlement over the rising cost of living heading into 2014 has flooded Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s Facebook page for almost all of his recent posts in late December.

An overwhelming majority of commenters on his page had began pleading to the premier to look into the living costs, with some even reminding him about promises made before elections, which they claim were subsequently broken.

Najib’s latest Facebook post, promoting Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and urging all Malaysians to welcome tourists with a smile and warm welcome, soon became a discourse about price hikes among more than 900 different comments posted there.

Many are also urging his resignation.

“Our PM has no dignity, he has been insulted yet still holds on to the position,” said a Facebook user, Harry Lanz.

“During GE you said you understood the problems faced by the people about living costs, now you play deaf. What is so happy if all prices go up, only the people will suffer,” said Zuhairy Jb.

Malaysians vent frustration on rising cost of living in postings on PM’s Facebook

BY LEE SHI-IAN
December 30, 2013

Malaysians struggling to cope with the hike in the prices of goods and services vented their frustrations and anger in complaints and New Year wishes posted on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Facebook page.

Netizens appear unconvinced by Putrajaya’s attempt to justify price hikes and subsidy rationalisation with the argument that it was necessary to protect the economy and investor confidence.

Their Facebook postings range from attacks to pleas, with one user, Mumtaz Haris, suggesting that Najib and the entire Cabinet should step down if they could not resolve the issues plaguing the people “since they were useless and inefficient”.

In his Visit Malaysia Year 2014 message, Najib had said that preparations were being made for the year ahead and he called on Malaysians to welcome tourists with a smile.

His message attracted various responses. One user, Joseph Gasis, said he is not sure whether he can smile because he has spent RM600 on school uniforms, bags and stationery for his children. He said he would also have to fork out another RM300 for the school bus fare. Joseph also said he has been unemployed since June and lamented that his savings will not last very long.

Shahrul Bahaman said the new year will be a sad one.

Meanwhile, a posting by Norie Noriah which attracted 5,108 likes, warned the government to tackle the cost of living issue before the people shifted their support.

Another user, Ahmad, wrote that before the 13th general election, Putrajaya had promised there would be no price hike, but it was a different story now.

Sharing the sentiment was Atiqa Ali who asked Najib why the public was burdened with increase after increase in the prices of services and goods when they were already struggling to eke out a living.
