Runway safe even for bigger aircraft
By Audrey Dermawan – 25 August 2014 @ 8:05 AM
THE Transport Ministry has certified that the runway of the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (LTSAS) here, which has been riddled with allegations of sinkholes, is safe for use.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said with the certification, bigger aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 could now use the runway.
“With bigger planes coming to Perak, this means that the state can look forward to an influx of tourists from other countries.
“This is good news for the state,” he said after accompanying reporters on a visit of the LTSAS runway here recently.
…
At present, only Firefly is operating at LTSAS, plying the Ipoh-Singapore route.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, in expressing his appreciation to the government, particularly the ministry, said with the certification, the people should no longer be worried when using the airport.
He said several airlines had expressed their intention to operate in LTSAS, namely, Malaysia’s hybrid airline Malindo Air.
“The company has indicated to us that it wants to start new routes between Ipoh and Subang, Johor and Medan.
“I was also in discussion with Chinese ambassador Huang Huikang recently on the possibility of flights between Ipoh and China,” he added.

Airline turns to smaller planes to escape sinkholes
IPOH, Dec 18 — Flying Fox Airways, which has not been able to launch its Ipoh-Medan flights using Boeing 737-800 aircraft because of problems at the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, will lease smaller planes to kick off the service.
Its chief executive officer, Daniel Lee, said yesterday the airline was working with its code-sharing partner, Sriwijaya Air, to lease ATR-72 aircraft to begin operations by March.
Flying Fox had been told the airport, which recently underwent a RM42 million renovation, would not be able to accommodate Boeing aircraft after sinkholes were found on the runway.
…
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi refuted allegations the sinkholes were caused by the renovation at the airport.
He said sinkholes were common in areas near limestone hills.

Airport sinkholes nothing new, says deputy minister
The Ipoh airport runway has sinkholes which make it unsafe for bigger planes.
IPOH, Dec 17 — The sinkholes on the runway at Sultan Azlan Shah Airport — the main reason why Flying Fox Airlines was not allowed to operate its Boeing 737 aircraft — are not a new phenomenon.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the sinkholes had been there for a long time but had never been deemed unsafe.
“Sinkholes are common in areas near limestone hills and Ipoh is no exception,” he told The Malay Mail yesterday.
“However, some sinkholes can be dangerous. So it’s best to get the experts to confirm the matter.”
Aziz refuted allegations that the sinkholes were caused by renovation at the airport earlier this year to accommodate large aircraft like the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320.
He said the RM42 million renovation included a 200m extension of the 1,789m runway and the upgrading of the terminal.
“The airport was re-opened in May after the completion of the renovation.
“Flying Fox was granted approval to operate there since it was supposed to accommodate big aircraft,” he said.
However, Malaysian Airport Holdings Berhad, which carried out inspections at the airport in October, was unhappy with the condition and decided to put the plan on hold for safety reasons.
Experts were called in to look into the matter.
