Rela members to patrol KK marts after spate of robberies at outlets

KUALA LUMPUR: Patrons of KK Super Marts can breathe a sigh of relief as Rela members will be patrolling the premises at 10 of its outlets in the Klang Valley following a spate of robberies at its outlets over the past five years.

KK Group founder and chairman Datuk Dr Chai Kee Kan said the company would be working together with Rela to prevent crimes in the premises.

“With 600 robberies at our stores in the past five years, it’s all the more crucial to have Rela personnel around to fend off potential robbers,” said Chai.

He added that the company had identified 10 outlets in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur for this security spruce up.

The outlets in these areas recorded the highest frequency of robbery incidents compared to other places.

“A Rela personnel will be stationed from 10pm to 7am at each of these hotspots to assist in crime prevention,” said Chai, adding that the initiative would take effect in the next week or two.

He added that he had instructed KK Supermart’s security team to guard its worst-hit outlets, but conceded that since they are unarmed, they would be powerless in the event of a robbery.

“If the robber has a knife, how can you defend yourself? Only the police (can),” he said.

Cops not doing enough, says KK Supermart manager

Police are not doing enough to prevent robberies at KK Supermart outlets despite assurances that it would post plainclothes police at outlets that are prone to robbery, said one of the chain’s field managers.

Danish Chai, who is in charge of outlets surrounding Gombak, said the robberies continue despite assurances from Setapak police, even after one of the alleged robbers was shot dead recently.

“I think the police not taking serious action. The robberies are still happening although they said they will send their people to stand-by there, but still I think they have not taken any action.

“One of the robbers was injured and then escaped. Until now we have not received no news of the escaped one,” he said when contacted on Friday.

He was referring to an incident on Dec 17 where – according to media reports – alleged robbers were leaving after a heist at the Rampai Business Park outlet when they were confronted by the police.

One suspect reportedly charged at the police with a machete and was shot dead on the spot. The other is believed to be wounded but still at large after the 4.30am incident.

However, robberies continue to occur in the area, including both of the chain’s outlets in Wangsa Maju on Friday.

Unfazed despite 10 robberies in two years

On Wednesday, KK Supermart Holdings Sdn Bhd had reportedly told reporters that its convenience store chain suffered a whopping 134 criminal cases a year, half of which were robberies.

NONEOne might imagine frequent armed hold-ups to be disturbing, but KK Supermart staff member Hasem Magrabali (right) is nevertheless unfazed despite personally facing at least 10 such incidents over his two years at KK Supermart.

“I am not afraid. Why should I be scared? We are going to die someday anyway,” he said when met at his workplace along Jalan Besar, Serdang – one of the frequently hit 24-hour stores.

However, first-time KK Supermart robbery victim Hanifa Wirae said she was shocked and traumatised by her ordeal, which occurred only two days ago.

“It was my first time. I’m now scared whenever I’m in charge of the cashier’s counter,” said the supervisor at the store outlet in Jalan Metro Wangsa, Wangsa Maju.

One KK Mart outlet held up every 31 hours

KUALA LUMPUR: The operator of 24-hour convenience store KK Mart is seeing a 400% increase in robberies at its outlets nationwide – an average of one outlet robbed every 31 hours.

General manager Hooi Weng Kheong said 56 robberies in 82 of their outlets were recorded last year.

After the chain expanded to 127 outlets this year, the number of cases rose to 217 as of Dec 17.

Hooi describes the figure as “alarming and scary” as KK mart has incurred losses of over a million ringgit since 2008.

“Even more terrifying is the danger to our 1,300 staff and customers as the robbers were usually armed,” he said at a press conference held at Wisma KK in Desa Petaling yesterday.

Over the past four years, at least 20 KK Mart employees had suffered injuries during such robberies. Three have been hospitalised for serious wounds.
