The Mahathir Award for Global Peace, an Oxymoron

Mahathir Peace Award

I am proven right again. I had pointed out that ‘THE MAHATHIR PEACE AWARD IS AN OXYMORON’.

ox·y·mo·ra (-môr, -mr) or ox·y·mo·rons
A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.

Time to get rid of UN, say top envoy and ex-PM

In a meeting of minds, Malaysia’s top diplomat and its most outspoken former prime minister agreed that the United Nations (UN) is practically useless in its current form.
….

“Do away with UN! I think we should resort to fighting each other again, a war to end all wars so to speak…

“I see a bleak future for the people who are in power (in the UN) and are loath to give up power,” Mahathir (right) said to about 30 diplomats and government officials gathered at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations in Wisma Putra, Kuala Lumpur.

In the West, the hawk is a metaphor for a warlike person. The dove symbolizes peace. Thus, hawkish and dove-like, respectively.

WHO COULD BE LESS DOVE-LIKE THAN THE HAWKISH DR MAHATHIR? Who could be less suited to launch an award for global peace? What a paradox! What a contradiction!

Who could be less dove-like than the hawkish Dr Mahathir?

*WHO COULD BE MORE RUTHLESS THAN DR MAHATHIR? No talk of peace here. It was WAR!

In his second decade in office, Mahathir had again found himself battling Malaysia’s royalty. In 1992, Sultan Iskandar’s son, a representative hockey player, was suspended from competition for five years for assaulting an opponent. Iskandar retaliated by pulling all Johor hockey teams out of national competitions. When his decision was criticised by a local coach, Iskandar ordered him to his palace and beat him. The federal parliament unanimously censured Iskandar, and Mahathir leapt at the opportunity to remove the constitutional immunity of the sultans from civil and criminal suits. The press backed Mahathir and, in an unprecedented development, started airing allegations of misconduct by members of Malaysia’s royal families. As the press revealed examples of the rulers’ extravagant wealth, Mahathir resolved to cut financial support to royal households. With the press and the government pitted against them, the sultans capitulated to the government’s proposals. Their powers to deny assent to bills were limited by further constitutional amendments passed in 1994. With the status and powers of the Malaysian royalty diminished, Wain writes that by the mid-1990s Mahathir had become the country’s “uncrowned king”.

*HIS USE OF THE INTERNAL SECURITY ACT (ISA) IS WELL-DOCUMENTED. He was far from peaceful. There was no negotiation, just radical surgery.

At the same time as the political and judicial crises, Mahathir initiated a crackdown on opposition dissidents with the use of the Internal Security Act….Mahathir ordered what Wain calls “the biggest crackdown on political dissent Malaysia had ever seen”. Under the police operation codenamed “Lalang”, 119 people were arrested and detained without charge under the Internal Security Act. Mahathir argued that the detentions were necessary to prevent a repeat of the 1969 race riots. Most of the detainees were prominent opposition activists, including the leader of the DAP, Lim Kit Siang, and nine of his fellow MPs. Three newspapers sympathetic to the opposition were shut down.

*WHO COULD EVER FORGET DR MAHATHIR’S TREATMENT OF ANWAR IBRAHIM?

As Mahathir took the reins of Malaysia’s economic policy over the coming months, Anwar was increasingly sidelined. On 2 September, he was dismissed as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, and promptly expelled from UMNO. No immediate reasons were given for the dismissal, although the media speculated that it related to lurid allegations of sexual misconduct circulated in a “poison pen letter” at the general assembly.  As more allegations surfaced, large public rallies were held in support of Anwar. On 20 September, he was arrested and placed in detention under the Internal Security Act.

Anwar stood trial on four charges of corruption, arising from allegations that Anwar abused his power by ordering police to intimidate persons who had alleged Anwar had sodomised them. Before Anwar’s trial, Mahathir told the press that he was convinced of Anwar’s guilt. He was found guilty in April 1999 and sentenced to six years in prison. In another trial shortly after, Anwar was sentenced to another nine years in prison on a conviction for sodomy. The sodomy conviction was overturned on appeal after Mahathir left office.

The Mahathir Global Peace Foundation and the inaugural presentation of the Mahathir Award for Global Peace, has started the wheels rolling to work towards peace and create a world that we, ourselves would like to inherit and keep in perpetuity and build a peaceful world for our future generations to inherit.

The Mahathir Award for Global Peace is an international peace award endowed by the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation established to contribute to worldwide peace efforts.

The Foundation was initiated to acknowledge the exemplary contributions and efforts of extraordinary individuals and organizations who have laboured selflessly for peace and stability in their own countries or in conflict-ridden territories worldwide.

It immortalizes the act defending and protecting the weak – the very fortitude of Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, for whom this Foundation and Award is named after and for his unrelenting pursuit of international peace and unity.
In conjunction with the launching of the Award, the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation bestows upon both Tun Dr Mahathir and His Excellency Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela the recognition of global peace advocacy which will be presented by Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Dr Mohd Najib bin Tun Razak.

Tun Dr Mahathir is awarded the Lifetime Campaigner for Global Peace and HE Nelson Mandela is awarded the Lifetime Campaigner for Peace and Freedom award which is accepted on behalf of His Excellency Nelson Rolihahla Mandela by the current president of South Africa, HE Jacob G. Zuma.

The Lifetime Campaigner awards to Tun Dr Mahathir and His Excellency Nelson Mandela is befitting and apropos as both are fiercely defenders of peace and their alliance goes back to the days long before South Africa held its first democratic all-race elections.

No, he just wants to be known internationally for something other than as an uncrowned king, a dictator and a tyrant. He is trying to convince others that he is the opposite of what he is.
