‘Inside job’ in security company over attack on 3 guard post, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — The police suspect the involvement of ‘rogue staff’ working with a security company and having underworld connections in the attack on three security guard posts at a housing area in Klang, Selangor last Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police were convinced there was an element of gangsterism at the incident in Bandar Bukit Raja where a security guard was killed and six others injured.

Nevertheless, he ruled out the security company as having links with secret societies.

Security guard died, 5 others injured, guard post burnt

By EUNICE AU – 18 April 2015 @ 12:12 PM

KLANG: A neighbourhood security guard was burnt to death and five others injured after a group of thugs attacked and burned their guard posts earlier this morning.

The incident happened at Jalan Rodat 1/Jalan Rodat 14, Bandar Bukit Raja, here about 1.45am. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Mohd Sani Harul said two of the three guard houses were completely destroyed while the third was partially burnt.

WHY THE OBSTACLES WERE REMOVED

Some of the reasons cited for the operation include obstruction of common property or common pathways, as well as the numerous residents’ complaints to the council.

MBPJ dismantles boom gates and barriers in three PJ neighbourhoods

MBPJ at work: Council officers using a heavy-duty welding torch to dismantle the wheeled gate erected by the Winchester Ara Damansara RA in Jalan PJU 1A/43 and Jalan PJU 1A/43E Thursday morning.

MBPJ at work: Council officers using a heavy-duty welding torch to dismantle the wheeled gate erected by the Winchester Ara Damansara RA in Jalan PJU 1A/43 and Jalan PJU 1A/43E Thursday morning.

RESIDENTS in three Petaling Jaya neighbourhoods received a surprise visit from Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) officers yesterday.

The officers came to remove boom gates and other road obstructions in the areas.

The operation, led by MBPJ Engineering Department assistant director Noraini Mohd Din, involved Winchester Ara Damansara, Bandar Utama precinct BU 6 and Damansara Jaya SS22.

The officers used a heavy-duty welding torch to cut a wheeled gate at the intersection of Jalan PJU 1A/43 and Jalan PJU 1A/43E.

Council lorries were used to dispose of the parts.

Over in Bandar Utama, the council officers used a backhoe to knock down and remove two poles in Jalan BU 6/6 and BU 6/2, which were used to secure counterweight boom gates.

The automatic boom gates at both Winchester Ara Damansara and Bandar Utama were not removed as the state government had given them a one-year grace period before being removed.

In Damansara Jaya, council officers removed empty oil drums used to close off Jalan SS22/2 and Jalan SS22/22.

No untoward incidents occurred during the operation at the three locations.

In a statement, MBPJ public relations director Haniza Abdul Hamid said the decision to remove the obstructions was made by the council’s technical sub-committee on barriers in neighbourhoods.

“The sub-committee made the decision earlier this month, on a case-by-case basis,” said Haniza.

Order to keep boom gate up raises ire

BY BRENDA CH’NG
BRENDA@THESTAR.COM.MY

A DIRECTIVE from Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) requiring all gated and guarded neighbourhoods to lift their boom gates from 6am to midnight has caused an uproar among residents who fear for their safety.

The directive from the council’s Safe City Committee is to allow for a free flow of traffic in and out of the neighbourhood.

The Safe City Committee consists of MBPJ Planning Department officers, councillor Khairul Anuar, the police as well as Fire and Rescue Department personnel.

“Can MBPJ guarantee the safety of residents if we keep the boom gate up from 6am to midnight? Can they ensure zero crime rate here?” resident Jonathan Wong questioned during a public consultation session recently.

The session was organised by Local Government, Studies and Research Committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre to discuss the Selangor government’s five-year manifesto.

Wong further argued that residents felt safer with the boom gate and keeping it up defeated the purpose of having it in the first place.

The decision to lift the boom gates came after residents argued against the demolition of gated and guarded structures in neighbourhoods around Petaling Jaya.

MBPJ had previously written to the residents associations (RA) and Rukun Tetangga (RT), instructing them to tear down the structures as it goes against the local government guidelines.

The council said the guard booths, boom gates and other access control methods employed were technically illegal as they did not comply with the council’s Planning Development Department’s guidelines.

These obstructions on public land contravened Section 46 (1) (a) of the Streets, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

Taman Seri Taming guarded, but unsafe

BY JADE CHAN

RESIDENTS of Taman Seri Taming, Cheras are living in fear of their safety after a spate of break-ins and robberies in their neighbourhood.

Taman Seri Taming Residents’ Association (PPTST) deputy chairman Theng Lee Ping said the four break-in and robbery cases within four consecutive days were the most serious since the gated- and-guarded system was implemented in 2006.

“The security guards were also beaten up during two separate incidents, and one group of robbers even took off with the security guard’s walkie-talkie set and wallet,” he said.

Theng, meanwhile, said there are 371 terrace houses and 40 units of flats in Taman Seri Taming, with three access points or gates into the neighbourhood which are manned by security guards.

Only one gate is open for access between midnight to 6am.

“PPTST will work with the security company to tighten security in Taman Seri Taming.

“We will also have a dialogue with the police on how to address issues related to safety and security,” said Theng.

Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng said, “I hope the police will consider redeploying their officers, such as those from the Special Branch and Pasukan Gerakan Am sections, to patrol the streets.

“I was informed by the Kajang police that they conduct regular patrols but Taman Seri Taming residents claim that they have not seen them.”
