Philippines earthquake creates spectacular rocky wall

A geologist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Maria Isabel Abigania, says a ground rupture pushed up a stretch of ground by up to three metres, creating a wall of rock above the epicentre.
A photograph on the institute’s website shows part of the rock wall grotesquely rising on farmland behind an unscathed bamboo hut.
Another house was shown lodged in a crack of the earth, while a big hole on the ground opened up at a banana farm.
Head of the institute, Renato Solidum, says the ground fissures from the quake which killed 198 people on Bohol and two nearby islands, were among the largest recorded since the government agency began keeping quake records in 1987.
“Most of our other quake records show a lateral (sideways) tearing of the earth, though we’ve also had coral reefs rising from the sea,” he said.

Philippine quake creates wall longer than 5km
MANILA: A deadly earthquake that struck the Philippines last week created a spectacular rocky wall that stretches for kilometres through farmlands, astounded geologists said.
Dramatic pictures of the Earth-altering power of the 7.1-magnitide quake have emerged as the government worked to mend the broken central island of Bohol, ground zero of the destruction.
A “ground rupture” pushed up a stretch of ground by up to 3m, creating a wall of rock above the epicentre, Maria Isabel Abigania, a geologist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said.
“Our people have walked 5km so far and not found the end of this wall,” she said, as experts from the institute surveyed the damage.

EBU, Philippines The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippine island of Bohol reached 110 Wednesday with only three people pulled alive from rubble.
The three were rescued in nearby Cebu province hours after Tuesday’s quake shattered office buildings and homes and caused many centuries-old churches to crumble.
In Bohol, the quake’s epicenter, rescuers counted 100 dead, said regional military commander Lt. Gen. Roy Deveraturda. Cebu reported nine fatalities, and one died on another island.
There seems little hope of finding any large number of survivors from beneath the rubble of leveled buildings, homes and churches.

At least 82 dead, churches destroyed as 7.2 earthquake hits Philippines
A magnitude-7.2 earthquake struck in the central Philippines on Tuesday morning, killing 82 people and severely damaging some of the country’s most hallowed churches, authorities said.
The earthquake hit at 8:12 a.m. (5:12 p.m. Monday ET) less than a mile from the town of Carmen in Bohol province, the U.S. Geological Survey and Philippine emergency authorities said. Carmen is in a remote region across the Cebu Strait about 40 miles from Cebu City.

The NDRRMC had initially put the death toll at 28, but police told the Associated Press later on Tuesday that the figure had risen to 82. The NDRRMC said 159 people were reported injured.
Two buildings and a fish port collapsed in Cebu City, the Philippines’ fifth-biggest city and one of its leading tourist destinations, as did the roof of a mall under construction, authorities said.
Part of Cebu Doctors’ University in Mandaue City collapsed, the Manila Bulletin newspaper reported, and the bell tower was destroyed at the Minor Basilica Del Santo Niño in Cebu City.

CEBU CITY, Philippines (Reuters) – A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 struck islands popular with tourists in the Philippines on Tuesday, killing at least 74 people, some as they prayed in a centuries-old church, and causing widespread damage to infrastructure, officials said.
Low-rise buildings collapsed on at least two islands and historic churches in the predominantly Catholic country cracked and crumbled during the quake, which sparked panic, cut power and transport links and forced hospitals to evacuate patients.
At least 65 people died in collapsed structures and landslides on the island of Bohol, 630 km (390 miles) south of the capital, according to a report from the region 7 office of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The report said eight others died in Cebu and another on Siquijor island. An earlier report had put the death toll in Cebu at nine.
More than 260 were wounded on Cebu and Bohol islands.

MANILA (AFP): A deadly earthquake in the central Philippines on Tuesday highlighted the Southeast Asian archipelago’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
The Philippines is located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
The following are the 10 deadliest natural disasters on record in the Philippines, based on government or United Nations figures:
1. A tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastates the Moro Gulf on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on August 16, 1976, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people.
2. Tropical Storm Thelma unleashes flash floods on the central city of Ormoc on Leyte island on November 15, 1991, killing more than 5,100.
3. Typhoon Bopha smashes into the main southern island of Mindanao on December 3, 2012. Rarely hit by cyclones, the region suffers about 1,900 people dead or missing.

Santi exited the Philippine area of responsibility early Sunday, but another typhoon is expected to enter the country by Monday morning, the state weather forecaster said.
Weather Forecaster Fernando Cada said on Sunday that the weather agency is monitoring a typhoon internationally codenamed “Whipa” hovering off Pacific Ocean.
Once Whipa enters Philippines, it will be named “Tino,” the third cyclone to visit the country this month and the 20th this year.

MANILA, (Updated, 12:09 p.m.) — At least 46,295 families or 219,591 people in eleven provinces in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Clabarzon were affected by strong winds and rain-induced floods brought by Typhoon Santi, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Sunday.
The council said 1,736 families or 7,421 residents are staying in 58 evacuation centers.
Some 3,433 houses were destroyed in Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bulacan and Aurora provinces.
Thirteen people died as Santi strike Luzon on Saturday.
NDRRMC spokesperson Major Rey Balido said 12 fatalities in four provinces included a man who was electrocuted, a police officer who was buried in a landslide while waiting for deployment to a rescue mission in Pampanga province; four people who drowned in floodwaters; and five who were hit by falling trees.
