So, just how did Zahid threaten the media?

According to the backdrop of the stage, the event was billed as ‘Majlis taklimat keselamatan bersama pemimpin masyarakat’ (Security briefing ceremony with community leaders) and carried the federal and Malacca government emblems.

There were no party logos in sight. But in Zahid’s speech – Malaysiakini has obtained a 20-minute recording of it – he made it clear that the event was only for Umno delegates.

About 11 minutes in, Zahid appeared to be aware that there were journalists in the room and instructed them not to report certain parts of his speech.

“Sorry. If there are reporters, don’t write this,” he said.

However, towards the end of the event, Zahid appeared to have a change of heart and warned journalists, in a loud and angry tone, not to write about the event or their newspapers would be closed down. The transcript of this portion of his speech follows:

“They (journalists), don’t write. This is closed door session, please. Don’t write anything. Don’t take any photograph of me and the crowd. I do not allow it. This is a closed-door session.

“I don’t want; as informed by the CM (chief minister), this is a closed-door meeting; this is only for Umno delegates. If any news about what I say appears in the newspapers, be it in Malay, English or Chinese or Tamil, I will shut down that newspaper.

“Do not write, I say do not publish, do not put on Facebook, do not anything. I know what to do. You are dealing with Zahid Hamidi okay?”

The remarks were followed by loud cheers and shouts of “Keluar!” (get out) from those present.

So, just how did Zahid threaten the media?

The minister…warned that it was a closed door event and prohibited the media in every language from publishing the contents of the forum, failing which he warned he would have the dailies all closed down.

Zahid now trains guns on dailies, threatens closure
12:35PM Oct 6, 2013

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reportedly barred the media from reporting a closed event at which he allegedly made “sensitive remarks” yesterday, threatening to close down all news dailies.

According to an Oriental Daily report today, this transpired after Zahid discovered several journalists amongst the audience at a security seminar with community leaders held in Malacca.

The minister then “invited” the journalists to leave the scene, reported the Chinese paper.

According to the report, Zahid earlier introduced several Umno candidates to the audience of the forum and then allegedly proceeded to make “sensitive remarks” in his speech.

However, the report did not elaborate on what these remarks were and did not identify the media involved.

‘Bullying due to being struck dumb and helpless’
2:39PM Oct 6, 2013

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamid had resorted to bullying Malaysiakini journalists because BN could not explain the irregularities highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report 2012, says DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng.

He said BN is “struck dumb and helpless” in facing the magnitude of the wastage and wrongdoings, and wanted to distract attention away from its inability to provide answers.

“DAP condemns such hostile acts and bullying by Zahid when he could not answer Malaysiakini how the police could have lost weapons or justify how their public integrity could have improved with such a poor record,” he said in a statement today.

Stop harassing our journalists, says Malaysiakini
2:51PM Oct 5, 2013

Malaysiakini has called on Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to halt his attempts to intimidate journalists from the independent news portal.

Journalists have a fundamental duty to ask questions of public interest, to which ministers have the responsibility to answer, said co-founders Premesh Chandran and Steven Gan in a joint statement today.

The duo described Zahid’s behaviour at a press conference yesterday as “conduct unbecoming of a minister”.

The co-founders reminded the minister it is the job of journalists to hold those elected into positions of power accountable.

“In light of a perception of rising crime and lawlessness, the conduct of the police is of grave concern. The home minister should take cognisance of these public concerns and respond accordingly,” they added.

Lost guns: IGP’s and Zahid’s cocky “explanation” –  Ravinder Singh

October 05, 2013

One told Malaysians that the guns might have fallen into the sea and the other confirmed it. This type of ‘explanation’ is what is termed in the Malay language as an attempt to “memperbodohkan” the public, to make fools of the public.

Losing weapons is a very serious matter. But to the Inspector General of Police and to Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, it is child’s play, as if the guns lost were mere toy guns. They are arrogantly telling the public “to mind your own business” and that asking the police about the lost weapons is none of their business.

This cockiness stems from the fact that they are the ones in power and whatever they do or say must be meekly accepted as the truth which is final and binding. In other words, do not question those in authority. This is the culture of “ketuanan”, the master must not be questioned. But isn’t the public the master as the public elects the politicians into office and civil servants are the servants of civil society? So by the theory of “ketuanan”, the public are the tuans of the politicians and the civil servants. So why can’t the public question the politicians and public servants?

Home minister: No more talk on weapons lost by police!

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today defended the integrity of the police force, saying that the weapons lost by the police were due to human error and not foul play.

He then forbade any more discussion on the matter and said “no more” queries from Malaysiakini.

Asked about the RM1.3 million worth of weapons lost by the police force, as reported by the Auditor-General’s Report 2012, Zahid said he was positive that there was no sinister motive behind the missing weapons.

“I know the loss was not due to a breach of trust, deviant acts or elements of bribery,” he told reporters.

“It is because of carelessness and mistakes made in the line of duty.”

Zahid then ended his statement by warning Malaysiakini to report exactly as he said, without any “spin”.

Malaysiakini, write clearly yeah? Don’t write other things… Other reporters can ask questions, Malaysiakini may not,” Zahid said.

He also told Malaysiakini not to ask any follow-up questions on the missing weapons.

“Okaylah, maybe Malaysiakini will write all sorts of things again… enough-lah,” and ended his tirade with “I don’t trust you at all…  Assalamualaikum!” before stalking off.

Speculation swirls as Zahid FORBIDS queries on missing guns: WHY?

Written by Malaysia Chronicle

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite his claims to the contrary, it looks like Home Minister Zahid Hamidi is going all out to woo the hardliners in his Umno party so that they will vote him back as one of their vice presidents instead of giving a chance to the new challengers.

Either that or the Auditor-General’s 2012 report has stumbled onto the crucial missing piece in the national jigsaw puzzle on what was the source of the firearms used by the gangsters and triad members during the recent and unprecedented spate of deadly shootings? Was it from the police?

On Friday, when asked by the press about the firearms mysteriously missing from the police armory, as discovered by the Auditor-Genera, Zahid was quick to pitch himself as the champion and defender of the ‘maligned’ police force.

Insisting that the weapons ‘lost’ by the police were due to human error and not foul play, Zahid rather high-handedly forbade any more discussion on the matter. He even picked on and publicly berated a reporter to emphasize his point.

“I think this is ridiculous behavior from a minister. It is blatantly self-serving. As the Home Minister, the police have to answer to Zahid in many matters but who is he to forgive their wrongdoings. Firstly, this was reported by the Auditor-General, not fabricated by the Opposition. Secondly, have the police carried out an internal probe, why are the findings not released,” Opposition MP for Batu Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

“We are talking about RM1.3 million of the people’s money that has gone missing due to neglect, corruption and maybe even theft. You can’t blame people for thinking Zahid is trying to play to the Umno gallery but if he is, he should stop it. Instead of helping the Malay cause, it will only make them look corrupt and supportive of the ‘I cover up for you, you cover up for me’ mindset. This is a real stigma and guys like Zahid should realize it even though many of the grassroots may be too naive.”

“On a more sinister level, is Zahid trying to hide something from the public by overreacting for the police? The accusations that there is a nexus between the underworld and the police is nothing new. It has been around for decades.”

IGP floats ‘fell into sea’ theory over missing guns

Far from offering a waterproof theory, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has claimed that the missing guns from the police force may have fallen into the sea.

He said that each weapon comes with an identification code and the police have not linked these guns with any criminal activity to date.

“Of the 37 missing guns, ballistics reports show that none of them have been used by criminals,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya.
