A smallish group of BN people jeer him.

Umno sex blogger Papagomo, who had previously declared intentions to challenge Anwar at Permatang Pauh did not turn up. Papagomo had recently posted several videos on his website that PKR leaders have condemned as gutter politicking and a “barefaced” bid by Najib’s Umno party to tarnish Anwar’s credibility.

Anwar draws 30,000 crowd stretching 2km to nomination centre: Confident of taking Putrajaya

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman, Malaysia Chronicle

BERAPIT, Penang – A three-cornered fight awaits Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim at Permatang Pauh, a constituency he has held from the 1980s, but that is unlikely to worry him much.

The more than 30,000-strong crowd stretching at least 2km long that accompanied him to the nomination centre at the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara in Berapit, Penang is a testament to his huge popularity and resurgence as the country’s foremost Malay leader.

The huge crowd of mostly everyday people from all age groups also underscores the amount of hope Malaysians have pinned on him and his Pakatan Rakyat coalition to effect change in the country. They want him not only to win the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat but also to wrest the federal government from Prime Minister Najib Razak and corruption-riddled Umno-BN coalition.

“We are quite optimistic (of wining the federal government) but we have to work very hard,” Anwar told Malaysia Chronicle as his minders forged a way for him to get back onto his Jelajah Merdeka Rakyat bus.
……….

In Permatang Pauh, Anwar will face Umno’s Mazlan Ismail, an engineer and vice president with Telekom Malaysia who was also a former PAS member. An independent candidate Dr Abdullah Zawawi Shamsuddin, a Penang-based medical practitioner, is the surprise third contestant.

There is little doubt that Anwar will steamroll over both Mazlan and Abdullah, who are political lightweights compared to the 64-year-old former deputy prime minister, who is not only well respected within Malaysia but maintains close rapport with top leaders from around the world.

Anwar booed and jeered outside nomination centre

Permatang Pauh candidate Anwar Ibrahim was “humiliated” by over-enthusiastic BN supporters even as he is contesting in his home state, where he has been an MP since 1982.

They booed and jeered each mention of his name and party by Election Commission returning officer Yusni Ismail at the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara in Berapit.
……….

Earlier, Anwar’s over-protective supporters almost burst through the barricades separating the crowd about 100 metres from the entrance to the nomination centre.

They were forcefully stopped by policemen, although they shouted “PM (Anwar) mesti mesra rakyat (must be people-friendly)”.

For two and a half hours, supporters from both the political divide noisily and enthusiastically shouted their party slogans and sang their respective inspirational songs.

The BN lot repeatedly sang the patriotic ‘Inilah Barisan Kita‘ song, while Anwar’s shouted “reformasi” and had fun asking “are you ready for BN?” to a resounding “No” .

ALL EYES ON PERMATANG PAUH: Anwar arrives to thunderous cheers from supporters

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman, Malaysia Chronicle

Security is tight

Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, is rated by many as having a better than even chance of forming the next federal government. He is expected to steamroll his way to a landslide victory in Permatang Pauh.

If his Pakatan Rakyat coalition (consisting of PKR, PAS and DAP) also wins more than half of the federal Parliament’s 222 seats, he will become Malaysia’s 7th prime minister and go down in history as the first leader from the Opposition to ever effect a regime change.

Due to the latest dispute over the DAP’s legitimacy to use its traditional ‘Rocket’ logo in the the May 5 general election, many pundits believe the odds have shifted further to Anwar’s favour.

This despite a late announcement from the Registrar of Societies that finally confirmed it would not challenge the DAP’s use of the Rocket symbol in the balloting papers although there is an ongoing dispute over the legitimacy of the party’s office bearers.

“It is too late. The way the ROS and Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration handled the issue stinks to high heaven. Few voters doubt there was an attempt to shackle the DAP and the sympathy votes will flow to the Pakatan,” Eddie Wong, a PKR veteran told Malaysia Chronicle.

A tough fight promised

However, Umno leaders have vowed to give a tough fight.

“When he (Mazlan) is ready to fight (in Permatang Pauh), it’s like (Anwar) meeting his match. He is highly qualified, while his strong religious spirit and being a PAS leader before will definitely gain him sympathy from some of the PAS people and the fence-sitters,” Sidek Baba, a senior lecturer from the International Islamic University, had told Bernama last week.

“All these (factors) may give him (Mazlan) some advantage. It is a wise decision to send the best candidate there to face a leader who desperately wants to become prime minister.”

GE13 off to a spirited welcome

Be that as it may, supporters from both camps are building up outside the IKBN compound. The PKR camp, cheerily decorated with flags including those of coalition mates DAP and PAS, is already a hive of activity, with party workers busily assembling their supporters.

Directly opposite is the BN camp, which is no less busy or less decorated with their trademark blue ‘dacing’ (weighing scales) flags and banners.

Police personnel and RELA volunteers are also present in fairly large numbers.

“We hope that everything will run smoothly. Any disturbance outside will be controlled by the police,” said Jusni.

Surprisingly an independent by the name of R Rajendran, 55, appears to submit his nomination.

Kit Siang reveals that he has used the DAP letter rather than the backup PAS letter prepared yesterday as contingency. However he has to wait until 10am when the nomination time ends to know whether the Election Commission (EC) will accept the authorisation letter.

“If the letter is not accepted, we will submit the authorisation letter from PAS.”

Pasir Mas (Kelantan) – Umno candidate Che Johan Che Pa fails to file his nomination papers. This means that the seat will see a one to one fight between Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali and PAS Nik Abduh Nik Aziz, who is son of Kelantan MB Nik Aziz.

Permatang Pauh (Penang) – BN candidates have entered have gone into the nomination centre while Anwar and his entourage entered around.

Earlier, when Anwar approached the centre, BN supporters shouted and booed at him. Both BN and Pakatan supporters were shouting at each other although they are about 500 meters apart. Anwar’s supporters, about 3,000 outnumbered BN’s about 1,000. No DAP flags are seen among the Pakatan crowd.

DAP gets to run using rocket logo as nominations begin.

UPDATED @ 09:39:53 AM 20-04-2013

Live reporting by The Malaysian Insider team
April 20, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — Hundreds of candidates from both the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) have gathered outside nomination centres across the country to file their papers for the May 5 general election.

Police are keeping a tight cordon outside the centres to separate the supporters, who are waving colourful party flag and banners.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says the returning officer has accepted the party’s rocket symbol, adding “DAP shall contest under rocket!”

Lim said the DAP headquarters here received a letter by hand from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) at 10 last night saying it had no objections to the use of the rocket symbol in GE13.

“All DAP candidates can now use the rocket symbol,” he said.

“I believe the EC (Election Commission) has informed all returning officers to accept nomination forms from DAP,” Lim said.
