A familiar face spotted on set of BN’s ‘water crisis’ film

Harakahdaily, 24 September 2012

Sep 24: While online news is abuzz with the revelation of a fake water crisis being acted out at a residential apartment in Petaling Jaya for a BN advertisement, a blog has revealed the identity of one of the ‘extras’.

Pointing to a photo of a long ‘queue’ by dozens of outsiders who descended upon the Happy Mansion flat to take part in the shooting of the film, the blog identified one of them as Mohd Ali Baharom, the lead character of the infamous ‘butt protest’ outside the home of Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan last May.

“Observe closely the main actor in the production of the film ‘Selangor’s Water Problem’ which is aimed at running down the Pakatan Rakyat government in Selangor. And look at his commando hat too!” quipped a posting on Kelab Greenbog, which is among the top-ten most popular pro-PR blogs.

Ali, president of a little-known group called Malay Army Veterans Association, shot to infamy when he appeared with a group of middle aged men at Ambiga’s Bukit Damansara home to protest the Bersih 3.0 rally which had then just concluded. Carrying explicit posters condemning Ambiga and passing lewd remarks on opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, they stood with their rears facing Ambiga’s gate. Prior to that, Ali had confessed to paying RM250,000 to a fake agent in return for a Datukship.

Who is paying for the making of this film to embarrass the Selangor PR govt in the State’s alleged water crisis?

The shoot took place at Happy Mansion, one of the older apartments in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.

Putrajaya, the mainstream media and Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) have been playing up reports of a water shortage in the country’s richest state in the run-up to the next general election, which must be held by the middle of 2013.

But Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government has disputed the claims, saying the issue was the treatment plants managed by state water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas).

Syabas has insisted that a water shortage was in the offing and that the first-term state government must approve the Langat 2 water treatment plant to avert a crisis by 2014.

A FILM to portray false water shortage: Another BN drama to SABOTAGE S’GOR?

Barred from site, threats to sue

The producers of the advertisement also barred reporters from entering the filming site and threatened to sue should there be publication.

It is an open secret that Najib’s Umno party has vowed to wrest back the Selangor state government at all costs, and this latest episode will do little to help the embattled premier regain the moral high ground.

Najib himself is already under heavy fire for several ‘doctored’ photos released by national news agency Bernama that tried to depict him as a ‘crowd puller’, able to attract a much larger number of people to his events than the actual situation.

PETALING JAYA, Sept 24 — A water shortage “infomercial” being shot in Happy Mansion, Section 17 here is believed to be linked to Selangor’s water issue and could be used in political campaigns later, PKR MP Hee Loy Sian said today.
…………..
“I think this will be used in political campaigns later,” the Petaling Jaya Selatan MP told The Malaysian Insider when responding to residents’ complaints about the filming.

A number of residents from an apartment used to film an advertisement, purportedly to portray a water crisis in Selangor, disapproved of the move when interviewed.

Among their concerns were a violation of privacy, congestion, political undertones and allegations that the message conveyed does not reflect the facts.

The shoot took place at Happy Mansion, one of the older apartments in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.

NONE“I am very convinced that this is a conspiracy. When we asked (the filmmakers) for details, they claim they don’t know.

“But they are asking residents and extras, who are paid RM50, to carry pails to depict a water shortage in our area,” said resident Dr S Paramananthan (right).

Actors were seen lining up next to a water truck. At times they were instructed to display anguish and shout on command while holding their pails.

Paramananthan also alleged that the filming was aimed at tarnishing the state government, in view of the lack of disclosure to the residents’ association.

Several extras told Malaysiakini that they are not sure of the purpose of the film while filmmakers were not forthcoming, adding to the secrecy of the shoot.

Happy Mansion resident Dr S Paramananthan said he suspected that the project was part of a smear campaign against the Selangor government.

“By doing this at our flats, it gives an impression that there is not enough water in these three blocks.

“But in fact, we’ve never had a water problem.”

Anti-S’gor propaganda film in the making?

Leven Woon | September 24, 2012

The director says she’s shooting a public service announcement on water conservation.

PETALING JAYA: A local film production company is carrying out an apparently secret project to discredit the Selangor government.

A FMT reporter this morning observed a crew from Reservoir Productions shooting scenes at the Happy Mansion flats, where about 200 actors were asked to carry water buckets and complain about the hot weather while lining up alongside a water truck.

The federal government has been warning of a possible water crisis in Selangor should the state government block the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant.

The state, on the other hand, has been making assurances that a water shortage will not happen in the near future. It has been insisting on a restructure of the water industry.

Staged water shortage filmed in secret in PJ
1:04PM Sep 24, 2012

An advertisement that is allegedly an effort to portray water shortages in Selangor is being filmed in secrecy at an apartment block in Petaling Jaya today.

Although residents of the apartment blocks in Section 17 are aware that the filming is related to the topic of water shortage, none when met had a clear idea about the actual nature of the ad being filmed.

NONEWhen met at the filming today, the ad’s producers were tight-lipped about details of the television commercial, curtly replying that they had to uphold client confidentiality.

Malaysiakini, who was there following a complaint from a resident on the filming, was also forbidden to enter the filming area or take photographs of the filming.

The producers also expressly forbade Malaysiakini to report on the matter, barring reporters from entering the site and threatening to sue should a story be published.

From Malaysiakini’s observations since 7am this morning, roughly 200 residents have been recruited to appear as extras in the filming of the staged water shortage.

One of the scenes seen being shot was a large crowd queueing to receive water from a water supply lorry.
