Psy wants to keep being the ‘funny guy with the funny dance in the funny video’
By HARIATI AZIZAN
hari_A@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Funny guy with the funny dance in the funny video that was how Psy made his debut in January 2001.
His first music video Bird from his first album Psy from the PSYcho World! earned him a cult following in his home country, but he remained anonymous to the rest of the world.
Now thanks to YouTube, the South Korean rapper is a billion-view global sensation who has partied with US president Barack Obama, boogied with United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and even inspired some Nasa astronauts to gallop in space.
The 35-year-old rapper amazingly remains down to earth about the whirlwind ride that his Gangnam Style horse dance has taken him on.
“It’s exactly the same thing when I made my debut almost 12 years ago in Korea. They recognised me as the same funny guy with the funny dance in the funny video.
“This is kind of my debut worldwide and that kind of image, I like it cause it’s the same thing 12 years ago,” Psy (real name Park Jae-sang) said after attending the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2012 (Mama 2012) in Hong Kong where he won four awards for his phenomenal hit song.
He said he never expected anyone outside Korea to even hear of his song.
“It’s a miracle. I can never break this record I think, unless I do a naked video or something,” he laughed.

‘Gangnam Style’ sets world record: Gallops to 1 billion video views
Psy stands for “psycho”, but today it should stand for “psyched”!
On Thursday morning, “Gangnam Style” hit 1 billion views on YouTube — becoming the first video ever to hit that milestone. To celebrate, YouTube has a little dancing Psy doing horsey moves next to his view count.
Fun!
The trend watchers at YouTube thought “Gangnam Sytle” might hit the 1 billion mark by late Friday evening or early Saturday morning. But the unstoppable power of “Gangnam Style” has surprised everyone — including Psy — each step of the way.
“Honestly, when I made this video I didn’t even expect 1 million views, because this is off my sixth album in Korea, so I just hoped it would be huge there,” the singer told MTV.

Psy performs at ‘Christmas in Washington’ post-apology
Psy continued on with his scheduled appearance at the “Christmas in Washington” charity concert on Sunday, shortly after apologizing for performing anti-American policy lyrics in 2004.
Psy apologizes for viral anti-American lyrics
The South Korean musician, famous in the States for “Gangnam Style,” was joined by Diana Ross, “Smash’s” Megan Hilty, “The Voice’s” Chris Mann, Demi Lovato and “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery at the event, which was taped by TNT at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
“Christmas in Washington” is a regular holiday concert that benefits the Children’s National Medical Center, and is attended by the President and the First Lady.
As news spread of Psy’s anti-American performance, some petitioned on WhiteHouse.gov for the rapper not to attend. The petition was later removed because it violated the site’s Terms of Participation.
The song in question, called “Dear America,” was written by a South Korean group called N.E.X.T., and Psy can be heard rapping about killing American troops serving in Iraq, as well as their families, during the eight-years-old performance.

PSY, who performed his hit “Gangnam Style” wearing festive red sequins, has been at the center of controversy this week after video surfaced of him spouting anti-American lyrics in 2004.

PSY apologizes for viral anti-American lyrics
(CNN) — Is this the end of “Gangnam Style” mania?
Korean pop star PSY — who rose to fame through his YouTube record-breaking video “Gangnam Style” — apologized Friday for anti-American lyrics he rapped back in 2004.
That performance resurfaced on CNN’s iReport and then circulated widely online. It included lyrics calling for the death of American troops serving in Iraq, not long after news of the brutal slaying of a South Korean hostage by Iraqi insurgents — an incident which sparked anti-American sentiment in South Korea.
In his apology, PSY said his performance had been emotionally charged and was a response to events in the war in Iraq.
“I understand the sacrifices American servicemen and women have made to protect freedom and democracy in my country and around the world,” he said in a statement.
…………….
PSY continued: “While I’m grateful for the freedom to express one’s self, I’ve learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I’m deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted. I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused by those words.
“While it’s important that we express our opinions, I deeply regret the inflammatory and inappropriate language I used to do so.”
The lyrics of the song, titled “Dear America,” were written by the South Korean rock band N.E.X.T., and PSY was one of three performers rapping out the lyrics on stage.

Despite his anti-American past now surfacing, Psy is still confirmed to perform at “Christmas in Washington” on Dec. 21, TNT confirmed to NBC News. President Barack Obama and his family will be in attendance.
Psy’s Anti-American Song: Video Of ‘Gangnam Style’ Singer’s Controversial Performance Surfaces (VIDEO)

A partial video of singer Psy’s controversial anti-American performance has surfaced, showing the “Gangnam Style” superstar destroying a mock military tank during a South Korean protest concert against the United States military.
On Friday, YouTube sensation Psy, otherwise known as Park Jae-Sang, made headlines when it was revealed that the “Gangnam Style” star sang lyrics from South Korean rock band N.E.X.T.’s song “Dear American,” including: “Kill those f—ing Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives” and “Kill them all slowly and painfully.”
The contentious Anti-American lyrics and photos from a 2004 protest concert were first posted on CNN’s iReport in October. CNN reported that anti-American sentiment flared in the country after the brutal killing of a South Korean hostage by Iraqi insurgents in June that year. Earlier, in 2002, anger ignited when two South Korean schoolgirls were accidentally struck and killed by a U.S. military vehicle.
Psy issued an apology for the lyrics, saying, “While I’m grateful for the freedom to express one’s self I’ve learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I’m deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted. I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused anyone by those words.”

Psy Says He’s Getting Tired Of ‘Gangnam Style
South Korean rapper Psy (a.k.a. PSY) admits that even he is getting tired of the internet megahit “Gangnam Style” even though he has been understandably milking it for all its worth.
“Gangnam Style” recently claimed the title of most-watched YouTube video of all time away from Justin Bieber’s video “Baby.”
Psy, who has been making personal appearances in the US and all over the world as a result of the viral video, admitted in Singapore yesterday that he’s kind of getting tired of the whole thing. GMA News of the Philippines offered further details on Psy’s misgivings:
“Speaking at a news conference in Singapore ahead of a free performance for fans, the 34-year-old — clad in a black suit and his trademark sunglasses — was modest about his fame and said he was just another person doing his job.
n addition to everything else, Psy ((Park Jae-Sang) has been nominated as Time magazine’s “person of the year” and is currently in fourth place.
Psy seems to understand that fame is fleeting, especially in the up-and-down world of the music industry, so he appears to have the right attitude. But if Psy is getting sick of “Gangnam Style,” where does that leave everyone else?

GANGNAM-style craze sweeps M’sian kampungs
JUST WACKY- You know it’s big when kampung kids are doing it
THE young has a term for it — epic. It means outrageous, cool, whacky and fun. Nothing shakes and rocks the cyber and entertainment world more than this one. It’s the greatest thing since Michael Jackson’s Thriller. For now, the entertainer is bigger than Justin Bieber or Ricky Martin. The dance is called Gangnam Style.
Everything about it is massive. On YouTube, the video has been viewed 220 million times and counting. It is a chart topper from Australia to Denmark, from the United States to the Netherlands. It was the brainchild of what went on to become an unlikely phenomenon of contemporary music — Park Jae-sang, also know as Psy, a chubby 34-year-old. He is a graduate of the famed Berklee College of Music but best remembered for his earlier songs with “inappropriate content” and for being fined for smoking marijuana in 2004.
Gangnam Style, which was released on July 15, changed all that. I knew Gangnam Style was huge when the kids in my kampung were mimicking Psy when they got their Hari Raya ang paw. I realised how big it was when at the staff open house for my company, the sound of its music turned heads and the underlings left their bosses to get close to the stage. I was following the tweets of some of the most uptight, serious and decorous twitter-wallahs and to my astonishment, they did tweet about “the new thing”.
…………..
No one parodies himself better than Psy. He has nothing to lose anyway. He was a failure in his earlier foray into music. He is too old to be part of the K-Pop phenomenon. And he can’t beat Rain, BoA, Dong Bang Shin Ki or the latest super groups, Girls Generation or Wonder Girls. He has to be his own. No one made it big at 34. Psy is a contrarian.
He proves everyone wrong. Psy is a one-man reconstruction and rebranding of the Korean new wave. I can fully understand talent manager Scooter Braun who discovered Bieber when he lamented: “How did I not sign this guy?”
The truth is no one had an inkling Psy would be a cultural tsunami.

Gangnam Style, Dissected: The Subversive Message Within South Korea’s Music Video Sensation
Aug 23 2012, 7:13 AM ET
Beneath the catchy dance beat and hilarious scenes of Seoul’s poshest neighborhood, there might be a subtle message about wealth, class, and value in South Korean society.
Park Jaesang is an unlikely poster boy for South Korea’s youth-obsessed, highly lucrative, and famously vacuous pop music. Park, who performs as Psy (short for psycho), is a relatively ancient 34, has been busted for marijuana and for avoiding the country’s mandatory military service, and is not particularly good-looking. His first album got him fined for “inappropriate content” and the second was banned.
…………
Now, Park has succeeded where the K-Pop entertainment-industrial-complex and its superstars have failed so many times before: he’s made it in America. The opening track on his sixth album, “Gangnam Style” (watch it at right), has earned 49 million hits on YouTube since its mid-July release, but the viral spread was just the start.
…………
“I have to admit I’ve watched it about 15 times,” said a CNN anchor. “Of course, no one here in the U.S. has any idea what Psy is rapping about.”
I certainly didn’t………But I spoke with two regular observers of Korean culture to find out what I was missing, and it turns out that the video is rich with subtle references that, along with the song itself, suggest a subtext with a surprisingly subversive message about class and wealth in contemporary South Korean society.

Psy: The Youtube Sensation Gangnam Style and Why is it Funny
While I don’t listen to Kpop nowadays, this song by Psy is craking me up everytime I watch it. I think I have watched the music video a hundred times but still it cracks me up.
There are many elements as to why this video is very funny and I will list it all down.
The Horse Dance

This is one of the main reasons why the video has gone viral. In the music video, Psy goes in a lot of places where he busts his moves whenever he wants to . A lot of people had uploaded videos, parodies, and tutorials you name it. There is even one guy who plays Gangnam Style in the violin. Now if that’s not viral then what do you call that?
Michael Jackson Kid

Since the kid did MJ moves, I’d call him Michael Jackson kid. When I first saw the kid I was like “What the hell? Is this a kid or a midget?” cause honestly, I’ve never seen a five-year old kid dance that well.

Craze over ‘Gangnam style’ video hits Singapore
By Yahoo! Singapore | What’s buzzing? – Fri, Aug 10, 2012
By Melissa Aw
A Singaporean team has parodied the latest K-pop smash hit “Gangnam Style”. (YouTube screengrab)
In the original four-minute music video of “Gangnam Style”, K-pop singer Park Jae-Sang or “PSY“, 34, performs the so-called “horse dance” that mimics the moves of riding a horse.
Since it was uploaded on YouTube three weeks ago, the video has gone viral, garnering a staggering 22 million views and drawing praises even from international pop stars such as Robbie Williams and Josh Groban.
In the video, PSY sings about the lifestyles of people living in Gangnam, an affluent district in Seoul.
…………
It has also spawned parodies in different countries, including Singapore.
Titled “Singapore style”, the local version was produced by Toxipen, a local-based Korean company that specialises in cinematography and photography.
………….
Filmed in Singapore’s most famous and scenic locations, which includes Little India, Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands, Somerset and Orchard Road, the video sees the main actor — who bears a strikingly similar resemblance to the original singer — mouthing the lyrics and dancing its signature moves in public.
