Hisham wants cops to probe ‘mooning’ incident

The action of certain quarters in stepping on the pictures of Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor has been described as an extreme act to sow hatred against the national leader, said Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

NONEHe said police would investigate the matter and refer it to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.

“Political hatred is a dangerous matter in a multi-racial and multi-religious society,” said Hishammuddin, who is also Umno vice-president, to reporters after opening the Pengkalan Chepa Umno division delegates meeting in Kota Baru today.

Hishammuddin said such matters should be handled carefully and speedily so that it would not exploited by certain parties.

Organisers of the ‘Janji Demokrasi’ rally today said they did not know a rally participant had directed his bare buttocks to pictures of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

NONEAccording to Gabungan Janji working committee member Maria Chin Abdullah, the incident appeared to have taken place on the opposite side of where the organisers were at Dataran Merdeka last night.

“We don’t support this sort of action. It’s not the way to behave. We don’t support it at all,” she said when contacted.

“We did not encourage this sort of behaviour and have even told people not to bring placards”.

In a picture of the incident now circulating on the Internet, a man who appears to be in his twenties, had lowered his pants to expose his buttocks to pictures of Najib, Rosmah as well as Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusof.

The public figures’ pictures were lined up on the ground, near yellow daisies and a bandana with the words ‘Janji Bersih’, and were surrounded by people taking pictures of the ensemble.

Another man is seen applauding the mooning while another person shows his middle finger to the public figures’ pictures.

In a video uploaded onto Youtube by pro-BN blogger Yuseri Yusoff, a large crowd steps on the now-ripped pictures of Najib and Rosmah  purportedly after the mooning incident.

Stomping on Najib’s picture

Many who do so are in yellow shirts while some are seen deliberately stomping on the pictures, in the video which appeared to have been captured at the corner of Jalan Raja and Jalan Tun Perak.

Another pro-BN blog Gossip Rakyat (GR) claims that the youth who dropped his pants have been identified.

“GR understands that one of the youths is paid by Pakatan (Rakyat) to do this despicable act of dropping his pants in public and trying to defecate on the PM’s picture.

“GR will publish (his identity) in the next article. Just wait. You can’t run anywhere. We hope the authorities will investigate this,” the blog said.

TIME’S UP FOR BN: Thousands attend Janji Demokrasi countdown despite police ban

Written by  Maria Begum, Malaysia Chronicle

UPDATED Thousands of Malaysians defied a police ban to attend a countdown to the nation’s 55th Merdeka or Independence Day, proving once again that Prime Minister Najib Razak’s BN government could no longer hope to rely on authoritarian and violent crackdowns to cling to power.

The Janji Demokrasi (Promised Democracy) event planned for Thursday had been banned at the 11th hour by the police. Organized by Gabungan Janji, a coalition of 47 NGOs, sister-countdowns were also held at various states and cities around the world, with overseas Malaysians keen to join in the celebrations. Malaysia celebrates its Independence Day anniversary on Friday, August 31.

“This is a real show of love for the country. If not for the drizzle, the crowd would have been even bigger, so who says Malaysians are not patriotic? They love the country and without wishing to politicize the event, I think it is clear they know BN is bad news and must be removed from power,” PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

“You can feel the sense of unity of purpose tonight. This is a people uprising Malaysian style. It is very peaceful but it is a revolt no less, BN has lost the hearts and minds of the Rakyat.”

Janji Demokrasi: Live updates

Friday, August 31, 2012 – 00:28
Location:
KUALA LUMPUR

………….

11.20pm: Mat Sabu and more than 3,000 people supporting Bersih and Himpunan Hijau arrive in front of DBKL, near its entrance only to meet a barricade of police officers. He is met by other Janji Demokrasi committee members — Maria Chin Abdullah, A Samad Said and Tian Chua. The leaders take a seat on a pavement along Jalan Raja Laut.

1.35pm: Pak Samad reads his poem composition to the crowd. However, the lack of a loud speaker resulted in the poem not being audible to a large majority of the crowd.

11.38pm: Hishamuddin Rais re-reads Pak Samad’s poem over a loudspeaker. The poem, titled Janji Demokrasi, was composed for today’s gathering. Only a few dozen can hear the repetition of the poem reading but cheers of Janji Demokrasi continue being shouted.

11.54pm: The crowd is still seated in front of DBKL. They are sitting and chilling. A little bit of a commotion was roused as a few motorcycles passed by and revved their engines as if to instigate trouble. Horns continue to blast as motorists pass by. All in all it is a very carnival-like atmosphere and there has been no violence. Police are still on guard, just watching the going-ons.

12.00am: The crowd countsdown to Merdeka and pops balloons as Aug 31 is marked on the clock. The crowd is expected to sing the national anthem ‘Negaraku‘ before they disperse. Fireworks have also begun to light the night sky nearer to Dataran Merdeka.

12.07am: Crowd begins to disperse after the opposition leaders which also included Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun left the vicinity. Some of the crowd are still mulling about at the intersection of Jalan Raja Laut.

Bersih activists flood Merdeka Square, join thousands of others

By Mohd Farhan Darwis
August 30, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — Thousands, mainly dressed in yellow T-shirts in a show of support for the Bersih movement, flooded Merdeka Square tonight with others celebrating the eve of Merdeka Day.

Blowing vuvuzelas, they came hours ahead of the 11pm start for the countdown to Merdeka in the historic square where Independence Day was declared 55 years ago.

At 11.05pm, hundreds of supporters greeted the arrival of PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu as a police cordon looked on. Others there include PKR lawmakers Tian Chua and Fuziah Salleh.

Witnesses estimated more than 5,000 people in yellow T-shirts have gathered under the Gabungan Janji banner, showing their support for clean and fair elections.

They also distributed yellow flowers to the others congregating for the countdown.

Police are directing traffic around the square, which will be the venue for the annual Merdeka Day parade in the morning.

MORE TO COME.

PAS calls on members to back ‘Janji Demokrasi’
  • Zulaikha Zulkifli
  • 6:52PM Aug 25, 2012

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu has called on party members to show up at the Aug 30 Janji Demokrasi rally at Dataran Merdeka.

“We encourage all PAS members to attend the celebration on the night of Aug 30 until 31 with 44 other NGOs that will gather there (Dataran Merdeka) to celebrate independence day,” he told a press conference at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

He added that all members who show up for the gathering should don their yellow T-shirts, which is the trademark colour of electoral reform group Bersih.

“We encourage everyone present to wear yellow because the demands of Bersih continues,” he said after chairing the party’s political bureau meeting.

However, Mohamad Sabu noted that Pakatan Rakyat too will be having its own independence day celebration in Shah Alam on the same day.

Crowd size not an issue, says Janji Demokrasi

The home minister’s low turnout prediction for the Janji Demokrasi gathering will not be an issue, the working committee’s spokesperson Hishamuddin Rais says.

“I really appreciate the Home Affairs Minister (Hishammuddin Hussein), who has the ability to become a bomoh and Pak Nujum (witchdoctor and fortune teller), like a seer who can see the future.

“That is good. That is really good. For us, it not a question of how big or how small the crowd will be. It is people coming that night wearing yellow,” Hishamuddin (left) said.

He said this when reporters asked him about Hishammuddin’s statement that the turnout would be low because the violence during Bersih 3.0 would put off many would-be participants.

Don’t bring placards or banners

NONEAt a press conference earlier, Warga Aman chairperson Raja Retinam (right) also announced that the event would also be held at countdowns in Malacca, Johor, and Perak, beginning from 10pm until the end of the countdown.

“The goal is that in conjunction with the celebrations for the 55th National Day, we wish to remind the rulers that our democracy is crumbling.

“It has been eroded many times. We wish to return it to the original democracy, as stated in the constitution,” Raja Retinam said.

Members of the working committee were also asked whether they were facing problems in the run-up to the event next week.

“So far, so good, touch wood. We are not facing any trouble,” Hishamuddin Rais replied, adding that the activities should not be threatened because all that would be done is to wear yellow, and national laureate A Samad Said is also expected to recite a poem.

“We forbid anyone from bringing placards, banners, or shouting slogans. We have agreed on this. This is only to celebrate the Merdeka eve together (with members of the public). Clear?” he said.

NGO countdown now dubbed ‘Janji Demokrasi’
4:05PM Aug 17, 2012

The alternative Merdeka Day countdown event at Dataran Merdeka organised by civil society groups is now dubbed “Janji Demokrasi (Promise of Democracy)”.

A new committee, called Gabungan Janji involving 49 NGOs, said that the purpose of the event was to celebrate Merdeka Day with the spirit of “Janji Demokrasi”.

This, the latest incarnation of the “Janji Bersih” event, organised by 26 NGOs, is  a play on the federal government’s much criticised Merdeka Day theme “Janji Ditepati”.

The event was initially supposed to remind the federal government about the Bersih 2.0 movement’s eight demands and that it has yet to fulfil promises of true electoral reform.

In a press release today, Gabungan Janji stressed that the group does not represent Bersih 2.0, as reported by some media organisations.

“Gabungan Janji would like to invite Malaysians to celebrate Merdeka Day in a very special way. We, people of all races, will gather at Dataran Merdeka peacefully

“We urge all Malaysians – from Perlis to Johor, and Sabah and Sarawak – to wear yellow on the eve of Merdeka Day,” read the statement.

However, as originally planned, national laureate A Samad Said will be reciting a special poem for the “Janji Demokrasi” gathering.

A press conference by Gabungan Janji is scheduled for next Thursday where further announcements would be made.

NGO countdown now dubbed ‘Janji Demokrasi’

————————————————————————————————————

The Home minister expects a low turnout at ‘Janji Bersih’ because, he thinks, many people didn’t like Bersih 3.0. His words were, “the violence that occurred on April 28 is a ‘lesson’ for many.”

He also warned, “But I assure the public that anyone who affects peace and stability will be dealt with accordingly, be it the gathering organiser or others.”

Question: Will the police be dealt with accordingly if they affect peace and stability? Or the Kuala Lumpur Petty Traders Association which threatens to take “aggressive action”?

Let his prediction be a challenge to all Bersih supporters in KL! Prove him wrong and make him eat his words. TURN UP IN THE THOUSANDS!!!

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said that the Bersih 3.0 rally on Apr 28 is likely to turn off many from coming out for the ‘Janji Bersih’, now dubbed ‘Janji Demokrasi’ (Promise of Democracy), gathering on Aug 30.

The minister (right) said the violence that occurred on April 28 is a “lesson” for many.

“Not many are keen on this thing (Janji Bersih).

“But I assure the public that anyone who affects peace and stability will be dealt with accordingly, be it the gathering organiser or others,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said the gathering, timed to coincide with the National Day celebrations, is unlikely to be “as bad as Bersih 3.0”.

………..
Janji Bersih is a play on the federal government’s ‘Janji Ditepati’ (Promises Fulfilled) theme for Merdeka Day, to remind it that promises of proper electoral reforms are yet to be kept.

Petty traders warn of showdown on Janji Bersih
4:08PM Aug 13, 2012

The Kuala Lumpur Petty Traders Action Council has warned Bersih supporters to steer clear from the planned Janji Bersih gathering at Dataran Merdeka on the eve of Merdeka Day.

Council chairperson Jamal Md Yunus said the organisers of Janji Bersih were playing politics and trying to cause hardship for petty traders and the public.

NONE“This time, we will take aggressive action to prevent this from happening and they will not be able to anticipate what we will do.

“We have 98,000 members and we will discuss plans during a Aidilfitri meeting. They (Janji Bersih) are trying to soil the auspicious Merdeka Day celebration,” he told Berita Harian.

Jamal urged Janji Bersih organisers, in particular national laureate A Samad Said, to reconsider their plan in order to “avoid a battlefield” scenario.

Contacted on this threat by Malaysiakini, Samad declined comment.

IPOH, Aug 11 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the government has no objection to the Aug 30 ‘Himpunan Janji BERSIH’ gathering if it can be held in a peaceful and civilised manner.

He said the gathering could be held, as provided under the Peaceful Assembly Act, but the organiser would have to comply with the rules and regulations.

“The government has no problem if they want to hold a peaceful gathering because we have the Peaceful Assembly Act. What is important is for the organiser not to involve political issues during the gathering,” he told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri aid here today.

Nazri said this when asked to comment on a gathering scheduled to be held at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 30 in conjunction with this year’s Merdeka Day celebration.

Pak Samad:

1 The countdown is not an exclusively Bersih event as some 26 other NGOs are taking part in it.

2 The police should not stop members of the public donning the electoral reform movement’s trademark yellow colour to the Merdeka countdown.

“It is not right for the inspector-general of police to look at this as a police versus Bersih matter,” he said.

3 The movement will join in the Dataran Merdeka national countdown.

4 Members of the public should participate in the event to ensure that ‘Janji Bersih’ is fulfilled.

IGP’s ‘yellow’ caution won’t cow Bersih

K Pragalath | August 10, 2012

The police chief says that the Merdeka Day celebrations should not be politicised, but A Samad Said argues that the colour yellow is not banned.

FULL REPORT

PETALING JAYA: Electoral watchdog Bersih will not be discouraged by Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar’s caution not to don yellow at the Merdeka Day countdown celebrations.

Speaking to FMT, Bersih co-chairperson and national laureate A Samad Said stressed that the colour yellow was not banned and the people had the right to wear colours of their choice.

He also said that Ismail had made the wrong assumption that Bersih was politically inclined, saying that the movement was championing free and fair elections.

“The IGP’s statement is wrong because Bersih assists politicians,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said the police chief should not be issuing threats.

“We are not politicising the matter [Merdeka Day] celebrations,” she added.

IGP: Don’t colour Merdeka eve with Bersih agenda

Police have urged Bersih-linked NGOs not to politicise the countdown to Aug 31 at Dataran Merdeka and the Merdeka Day celebrations as well.

“Merdeka celebrations involve all Malaysians, don’t make it a political issue.

“We, the people of Malaysia, want to welcome our 55th year of independence with joy,” inspector-general of police Ismail Omarsaid today.

Ismail said this in reference to the plan by 26 pro-Bersih NGOs to wear yellow during the countdown, to remind the government of its unfulfilled promises for clean and fair elections.

The NGOs plan to hold an alternative Merdeka Day countdown at Dataran Merdeka, dubbed Janji Bersih (Clean Promises) – and have asked participants to don yellow to symbolise their struggle for electoral reform.

The event would be held near a fountain on the northern corner of Dataran Merdeka, adjacent to the venue of the government-sponsored celebrations.

Bersih agenda to colour Dataran Merdeka countdown

Twenty-six NGOs will hold an alternative Merdeka Day countdown celebration at Dataran Merdeka to remind the federal government of its unfulfilled promises in ensuring free and fair elections.

Bersih steering committee head A Samad Said said today the event – dubbed the Janji Bersih (Clean Promises) gathering – will require participants to don yellow to symbolise their struggle for free and fair elections.

However, Samad stressed, the event is not organised under the name of Bersih because only 26 NGOs out of more than 80 coalition members have endorsed this event. Others groups are expected to join in soon.

The Janji Bersih theme is an obvious play on the federal government’s Janji Ditepati (Promises Fulfilled) Merdeka Day theme, which has been ridiculed as pro-BN propaganda.

“All these while, we have been hearing ‘promises’ for this coming Merdeka celebration. We know what everyone wants a cleaner and fairer Malaysia in the 55th Merdeka Day celebrations.

“To celebrate the theme Janji Bersih, we call upon all Malaysians of all races from all corners of Malaysia, both young and old, to wear yellow on that very night,” Samad told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Event to kick-off next to fountain

The event will kick off at 10pm, around the fountain located at the northern-most point of Dataran Merdeka, adjacent to the field where the federal government sponsored countdown will take place.

Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin, another speaker at the press conference, said the Janji Bersih gathering is to remind the people that Bersih’s eight demands to the government to improve the election process are yet to be fulfilled.

“We encourage those who will join the event to wear yellow because it symbolises the eight demands of Bersih for clean and fair elections.”

Bersih counters with own Merdeka theme

K Pragalath | August 9, 2012

Bersih 3.0 co-chairman, A Samad Said, said its Merdeka gathering is for Malaysians who want free and fair elections.

KUALA LUMPUR: Election watch dog Bersih 2.0 has joined this year’s 55th Merdeka celebrations with a Merdeka countdown gathering themed, “Bersih’s Promise”.

“We have heard ‘many promises’ for the celebrations, but we do know that Malaysians want free and fair elections,” National Laureate A Samad Said told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here today on behalf of 26 civil society organisations.

The term “many promises” refers to Barisan Nasional’s Merdeka theme, “Promises Fulfilled”.

“To celebrate our theme, Bersih’s Promise, we invite all Malaysians to gather at the Dataran Merdeka fountain on Aug 30 at 10pm in yellow,” said Samad.

He added that the event was being held to tell the public Bersih’s eight demands for electoral reform.

“Bersih is now in an unclear position as it is disturbed by the government. We need to grow and inform the public,” said Samad.

Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) chief Badrulamin Shaharin, otherwise known as Chegu Bard, said the celebration is vital because it was time to counter the government’s “Promises Fulfilled” theme.

“They claim promises fulfilled but they never fulfilled promises for free and fair elections,” said Chegu Bard.

He also dismissed the necessity to apply for a permit for a gathering.
