PETALING JAYA: Over 60 NGOs presented a memorandum to the Islamic development department (Jakim) in Putrajaya today demanding that it take action against “rogue Islamic preachers” who insult other faiths.

The 63 NGOs said despite numerous police reports made against such preachers and the extensive media coverage on their inciteful statements, nothing has been done to punish them.

In the memorandum, Global Human Rights Federation president S Shashi Kumar said Jakim must act “without fear, favour or double standards” in taking stern action against preachers like Firdaus Wong, Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu and Ahmad Iqram Mohd Noor, among others.

“These Islamic preachers have been continuously attacking non-Islamic faiths and beliefs in the public domain and social media with their intentional insults, lies and mockery. They have even misquoted the verses in the holy books for their own ulterior motives and hidden agendas,” he said in the memorandum.

“(They have not) obtained proper scholarly advice on the teachings and beliefs of other religions.”

He said the preachers had violated Articles 11(1), (3) and (5) of the Constitution, which relate to freedom of religion, as well as parts of Rukun Negara.

“We would like to remind Jakim that these preachers are a threat to the peaceful coexistence of a multiracial, multi-religious and multicultural society.
