This NYT op-ed is so egregiously off base, both in terms of facts and logic, that it was simply irresponsible for @nytopinion to publish it. Here are 5 examples of significant falsehoods, misleading statements, or flawed logic (there are many more) 1/https://t.co/L9mFHlsF6b
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
This is highly misleading: It was Yanukovych’s security forces who perpetrated the main violence in the “final stages” of this “uprising” (more commonly referred to by Ukrainians themselves as the Revolution of Dignity) 3/https://t.co/fUsV8RRIV6
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
Ex #2: “The corruption of Mr. Yanukovych’s government has been much adduced by the rebellion’s defenders, but corruption is a perennial Ukrainian problem, even today.” 5/
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
Since 2014, a grassroots movement against corruption has led to real successes. To equate the corruption under Zelensky with corruption under Yanukovych is pure ignorance 7/https://t.co/S5f912fDxk

This logic knocked me off my seat. One can argue about Russian claims to Crimea b/c they have spilt blood defending it in the past? Does it really need to spelled out what an intl system based on this principle rather than on intl law and respect for sovereignty would lead to? 9/
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
Ex #3: “In recent years, Russian control of Crimea has seemed to provide a stable regional arrangement: Russia’s European neighbors, at least, have let sleeping dogs lie.” 11/
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
More broadly, both before and after 2014, Russia was waging cyberattacks, meddling in elections, stirring up coups, and conducting assassinations throughout Europe. What “stable” regional arrangement is Caldwell referring to? 13/https://t.co/BaU8olHZj3
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
This is so misleading, it’s tough to know where to begin. I could provide details on how NATO has been slow & hesitant to turn on mil aid spigot due to concerns about escalation. Or to data on how 🇷🇺 manpower, tanks, planes, & ships dwarf those of 🇺🇦, even w/ NATO aid. 15/
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
Ex #5: “Even if we don’t accept Putin’s claim that 🇺🇸 arming of 🇺🇦 is the reason the war happened…it is certainly the reason the war has taken the kinetic, explosive, deadly form it has….1000s of Ukrainians have died who likely would not have if the 🇺🇸 had stood aside.” 17/
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
Russia’s repression and executions of Ukrainians was pre-planned. Even if Russia quickly conquered much of Ukraine as it expected, horrors would have been inflicted on the Ukrainian people. 19/https://t.co/JmBWEEsgL4
— Jordan Gans-Morse (@J_GansMorse) June 2, 2022
But op-eds like this falsely imply that “all sides are to blame” & “even a bad peace is better than war.” This causes real harm by undermining public support in the US and EU for helping Ukraine protect its sovereign territory. 21/

This is a terrific thread thank you. We must call out inaccurate reporting and even micro-distortions add fuel to the fire

We’ve heard of it. And your point is?

Great takedown. Logical, concise, and devastating to the absurd claims in the NYT OpEd. Bravo.
