In April 2021, the White population replacement conspiracy theory was prominently mentioned on the Tucker Carlson show.[154] Days later, during a committee hearing, Republican Congressman Scott Perry said “For many Americans, what seems to be happening or what they believe right now is happening is, what appears to them is we’re replacing national-born Americans, native-born Americans to permanently transform the landscape of this very nation.”[155][156] Former speaker Newt Gingrich echoed the theory’s sentiments while discussing immigration in a Fox News interview in August 2021:
“I think what’s hard for most of us to accept is that the anti-American left would love to drown traditional classic Americans with as many people as they can who know nothing of American history, nothing of American tradition, nothing of rule of law, and I think that when you go and you look at the radical left this is their ideal model is to get rid of the rest of us because we believe in George Washington, we believe in the Constitution, and you see this behavior over and over again.”
On September 22, 2021, Tucker Carlson promoted the conspiracy theory on a segment of his show claiming that President Joe Biden was intentionally trying to replace the population with people from the third world.[161]
On May 14, 2022, The New York Times published an account of the 2022 Buffalo shooting in which ten people were killed and three others were injured. The account included law enforcement allegations of racist intent by the shooter. The New York Times described the shooter as “entranced by replacement theory.”[162]

Of course it’s Tucker Carlson. But it’s not just him. Don’t let the many GOP officials and leaders off the hook who have mainstreamed and promoted this deadly conspiracy. Also: don’t share the manifesto. Please.
It’s easy to identify Replacement Theory when it’s Nazis with torches chanting “Jews will not replace us.” But it’s just as dangerous in its more insidious forms, with conspiracies about immigration and stolen elections — what GOP officials like Stefanik & others have promoted.
For those asking: Replacement Theory is a white supremacist conspiracy that nonwhite people & immigrants are trying to take over the country. It’s deeply racist, xenophobic, and antisemitic (Jews are often seen as pulling the strings) and has motivated many acts of mass violence.
To reiterate: 11 of the 13 people shot today in Buffalo were Black. That is no accident. This is what years and years of unchecked white supremacist conspiracies – amplified by social media, Tucker Carlson, & countless GOP pols – does.
