A prominent fundraising site cut ties with a convoy of Canadian truckers that had descended on that nation’s capital to protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates and regulations.
GoFundMe blocked the release of almost $10 million in donations to the “Freedom Convoy,” Friday in connection with “the promotion of violence and harassment” in Ottawa.
“We now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity,” the website wrote in a statement.
Donors had two weeks to ask for a refund, and the rest of the money the group raised would be allocated to “credible and established charities” chosen by Freedom Convoy organizers, the site said.
Thousands of truckers rolled into the Ontario city on Jan. 29, many of them blocking roads outside of Parliament buildings, honking loudly and brandishing Canadian flags and “F–k [Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau” banners.
Police were bracing for a surge of protestors to join their ranks this weekend, and said the situation was “increasingly volatile and increasingly dangerous,” The Toronto Star reported Friday.
“The hatred, the violence, the illegal acts that Ottawa residents and businesses have endured over the last week is unacceptable in any circumstance,” Ottawa police Chief Peter Sloly reportedly said.
“Do not bring weapons. Do not bring firearms. Do not come here to cause harm. Do not come here to break the law. You will be held to account,” Sloly warned would be vigil-antis, after reports of a man arrested for trying to transport a weapon to the capital.

On Wednesday, Facebook took down a page created by US truckers who were planning to ride from California to Washington DC for a similar protest.
The “Convoy to DC 2022” page was taken down for violating the social network’s policy against sharing QAnon conspiracy theories, according to Fox News.

Freedom Convoy 2022 (French: Convoi de la Liberté) is an ongoing protest conducted by truck drivers in Canada against COVID-19 vaccine requirements to re-enter the country by land introduced by the Government of Canada on January 15, 2022. Composed of several routes traversing all of the Canadian provinces, the truck convoys converged on Ottawa on January 29, 2022, with a rally at Parliament Hill.[8] The protest continued into January 30, 31 and February 1.[9][10][11]
Prior to January 15, 2022, truck drivers and other essential workers had been exempt from the two-week quarantine for unvaccinated travellers crossing Canada’s borders. The exemption’s abolition has been criticized by some politicians and truckers for having the potential to exacerbate the supply chain disruptions already experienced in Canada.[14] The United States also has a vaccine requirement for non-US individuals which began on January 22, 2022. As of January 22, when the United States’ mandate came into effect, these mandates would impact 26,000 of the 160,000 drivers in both the United States and Canada who regularly cross the border.[15]
The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates that 85% of the 120,000 Canadian truck drivers are already vaccinated against COVID-19.[16] A January 29 CTA statement cautioned the public that a “great number of protestors” with no connection to the trucking industry “have a separate agenda beyond a disagreement over cross border vaccine requirements.”[17]
While several Conservative and right-wing politicians supported the protest, the convoy has been condemned by trucking industry groups.[18][19] On January 27, Trudeau said that almost 90% of Canadians were vaccinated, as were many truckers in Canada, and that a “small fringe minority of people” in the convoy do not “represent the views of Canadians.”[20] Omar Alghabra, the Minister of Transport also denounced those carrying signs with swastikas and Confederate flags, and those who “called for the overthrow of the government.”[21] Alghabra said that by January 29, based on recent Statistics Canada data, there were no indications that the implementation of the vaccine mandate had decreased cross-border truck volume.[22][23]

At a press conference Tuesday, Kenney said officers were assaulted, including one instance of people trying to ram members of the RCMP leading to a collision with a civilian vehicle.
“This kind of conduct is totally unacceptable. Assaulting law enforcement officers who were simply doing their job to maintain public safety and the rule of law is completely unacceptable,” he said.
“Without hesitation, I condemn those actions and I call for calm amongst anybody who feels sympathetic to those engaged in this blockade.”
A spokesperson for the RCMP was not able to provide any details about what happened by deadline.
The blockade entered its fourth day on Tuesday, stopping traffic through the busy U.S. border crossing with Montana in protest of COVID-19 health measures.
On Tuesday afternoon RCMP said those blocking the highway or aiding the blockade may be arrested or charged under Alberta’s Critical Infrastructure Defence Act.
“We have been engaged with protesters at the Coutts border crossing in an effort to find a peaceful and safe resolution for all involved. We thought we had a path to resolution, the protesters eventually chose not to comply,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.
“What may have begun as a peaceful assembly quickly turned into an unlawful blockade … This event is not a peaceful assembly.”

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between January 14-17, 2022, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
