Unlike Najib who used the Sedition Act to get you, Mahathir says, “Tell the truth even if Sedition Act hangs over you.”

KUALA LUMPUR: There is nothing to worry about if you tell the truth and get probed for sedition as it does not mean there will be prosecution, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The police is here to protect us,” said Dr Mahathir when commenting on the action by the police to investigate the panellists of the recent Rome Statute forum last week for allegedly being seditious.

“A sedition probe does not mean that an investigation will end up prosecuting people.

“We must find out if there is an attempt to stir up trouble or not.

He was speaking to the media after opening the Al-Sharq Youth Annual Conference 2019 here on Wednesday (May 1) which addresses the issues of the media and the future.

Relax, Rome Statute probe might not lead to charges, says Dr Mahathir

THERE is no need to overreact over the police’s use of the Sedition Act to investigate a recent forum on the Rome Statute, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The investigation may not result in any charge and that police still had to do their duty when a report is lodged, he said.

“It doesn’t mean the investigation will prosecute people, but they must find out whether there was any attempt to stir up trouble or not. That is why they have to investigate. That does not mean it will be followed by charges,” he was reported as saying at a youth conference this morning.

Outgoing Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said recently police are using the Sedition Act to investigate the forum, held last Saturday at Universiti Malaya.

Several police reports were lodged on the forum which discussed the merits of a leaked presentation made by certain mahat allegedly to influence the Malay rulers to reject the Rome Statute.

Panellists at the forum included Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, former ambassador and Group of Eminent Malays (G25) spokesman Noor Farida Ariffin, Dr Syed Husin Ali, UM constitutional law expert Emeritus Professor Shad Saleem Faruqi former student activist Asheeq Ali Sethi Alavi and lawyer Lim Wei Jiat.

Police have been criticised for pressing ahead with the probe, with some lawyers saying they have the discretion to decide whether it was worth investigating.

Farida, among others, said those who lodged police reports against the forum are “wasting police time” when the force is better off investigating real crimes.
