Doctor who said ‘some women deserve to be raped’ suspended indefinitely

Christopher Kwan Chen Lee’s six-week suspension extended for an undetermined period by the Medical Board of Australia

An emergency doctor who said “some women deserve to be raped” and shared offensive images and comments online while revealing his identity has been suspended by Australia’s health practitioner watchdog.

In April Dr Christopher Kwan Chen Lee was suspended by the Tasmanian health practitioners tribunal for six weeks after he admitted to posting a series of sexist and racist remarks online, including one that said “some women deserve to be raped”.

Lee previously worked in Tasmania, but in 2018 he began work at Box Hill hospital in Victoria. However, Guardian Australia revealed his offensive remarks went far beyond those considered by the tribunal, and included sharing images of dead bodies, videos of fatal car crashes, and sexually explicit photos of his wife.

Lee’s initial suspension was due to expire on 11 June. But on Friday the Medical Board of Australia suspended him for an undetermined period.

“The board has taken this action in the public interest to maintain confidence in the medical profession,” it said in a statement. “The board will not be making any further comment in relation to Dr Lee at this time.”

In May the Australian health practitioner regulation agency launched a fresh investigation into Lee after Guardian Australia reported that he also had shared patients’ medical records, including x-rays of the chest of a four-year-old girl suffering from pneumonia and an x-ray of a broken arm.

Christopher Lee Kwan Chen, a Malaysian medical doctor who was practicing in Australia until very recently, has been suspended by the Medical Board of Australia for actions outside of his work.

This was after many of his sexist and racist comments made on Singapore’s Hardwarezone forum came to light and resulted in the doctor being investigated by a medical tribunal.

Previously working in Tasmania, and later in Melbourne’s Box Hill hospital, the current suspension has barred him from working anywhere in Australia.

It was to begin from May to allow for his employers to find another replacement, but public outcry prompted the decision to be made effective immediately.

What happened?

Lee’s various misogynistic comments he made online have been noted by the board, apparently after the authorities were alerted of his conduct following a tip-off.

One of the oft-cited comments Lee made online that has been picked up by various media is: “Some women deserve to be raped, and that supercilious little bitch fits the bill in every way.”

About another woman, he wrote in an Ask Me Anything (AMA): “I beg to differ. This kind will NEVER learn. She needs to be abandoned in India and repeatedly raped in order for her to wake up her idea.”

“I can just as easily condemn your mother for a whore (if the situation warranted it) as I can save your life or even hers.”

Backlash

Many commenters then inundated Eastern Health’s Facebook page demanding that Lee’s medical license be revoked.

“Dr Lee will not be returning to work until the completion of this investigation,” the Eastern Health statement said.

“We wish to advise that Eastern Health takes the issue of professional misconduct very seriously… we value diversity, inclusivity and living together respectfully and do not tolerate disrespectful comments or racism in any form,” the statement also said.

PETALING JAYA – A Malaysian doctor in Australia is being investigated by the authorities after he repeatedly called for women to be raped.

According to a report by British newspaper The Guardian, Dr Christopher Lee Kwan Chen also posted revenge porn and shared photographs of medical procedures he performed as well as patient x-rays on an online forum.

He had been suspended by a health practitioners’ tribunal for six weeks earlier in April after he admitted to posting a series of sexist and racist remarks online.

The suspension bars the 31-year-old from working anywhere in Australia, where he had studied medicine and began working at Box Hill Hospital in Victoria in 2018 after a previous stint in Tasmania.

At first, Dr Lee’s suspension was slated to start in May in order to give his workplace time to find a substitute.

However, public outcry about his online comments like “some women deserve to be raped, and that supercilious little b**** fits the bill in every way” as well as “she needs to be abandoned in India and repeatedly raped in order for her to wake up her idea”, led to him being told not to return to work.

The tribunal had ordered Dr Lee to undergo training about ethical behaviour on social media, but this did not seem to deter him.

He has continued posting online, saying: “We’ll see who has the last laugh”.

Previously, he had said that his online persona matched his persona in real life.

Back when he was criticised for his comments, Dr Lee said: “Malaysian and Australian authorities can’t touch me for things I say on a Singaporean forum”.

In an act of revenge porn, Dr Lee had also retaliated against a woman who criticised him online by posting her nude photos, which forced her to shut down her online accounts.

“A new legion of perverts” would be viewing her images, he wrote, “I won”.

He has also boasted of his sex life with his wife, posting photographs of her online and making disturbing comments such as: “If my marriage fell apart, it would not end in divorce. It would end in murder”.

Dr Lee also wrote that he would force an abortion by kicking “her down the stairs” if his wife ever got pregnant..
.

He has also deleted his Facebook account, where he posted disparaging remarks about women – such as Singaporean women being “some of the most materialistic, pampered and self-entitled women you are likely to meet anywhere” and Chinese women being “calculating, ruthless animals” – and explicit posts about his wife.

A former employer, Royal Hobart Hospital, had also cautioned Dr Lee for accessing a patient’s medical records on 21 occasions “without consent or clinical need”.
.

According to Brooks, Australian doctors are bound by the Australian Medical Association Principles of Medical Ethics which can be summarised as ‘do no harm’.

“The harm Dr Lee is suggesting in the above messages gives us some clear insight into the way he feels about and treats women. Make no mistake, domestic and sexual violence is now a national crisis,” she added.

  1. MultiMan says:

He didn’t specifically say all women. Only a small subset of those that fits a certain limited criteria. The media also took this opportunity to smear and insert untruths at the same time to further their leftist/sjw agenda. Nevertheless, his mistakes were exaggerated by the media for selling news and pushing a feminist agenda.

    • SingleMan says:

Are you suggesting ” a small subset” of women deserve to be raped?

      • MultiMan says:

I am not suggesting anything. I am merely correcting sensationalized or exaggerated untruthful headlines. He most definitely did not call for women to be raped but only targetted a single certain individual in a particular discussion, and if you do not read the whole thread in context, saying he calls for all women to be raped is dishonest and sensationalism reporting. Only leftist and identity politics and seasoned social justice warriors would believe otherwise.

      • SingleMan says:

Even suggesting a single woman to be raped is unacceptable.
