KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak has appealed for public help to cover the legal costs his family has incurred fighting numerous charges which had been filed against him and his wife.
The former prime minister posted on his Facebook page that his daughter had also started her own initiative with a group, Gerakan Belia Sejagat, to lessen their financial burden.
Najib said the group would also help activists and government critics who faced “pressure” from the authorities.
He said one such activist had already been slapped with a legal suit from Syabas for criticising the Selangor government over the water supply issue.
“Truly, my family has been facing financial pressure due to all the legal fees and also high bails that have been imposed.
“All this while our close friends and relatives have stepped forward to help out. However, if possible we don’t want to burden them anymore.
“If it is not too much, those who wish to help out can contribute to this fund,” he said, referring to the fund started by his daughter called “Solidarity Fund 2.0 DSN”.
He ended the posting by thanking all those who had prayed for the wellbeing of his family.
Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, have been slapped with multiple charges of money laundering and abuse of power.
Both are out on multi million ringgit bail each.

Seputeh Umno deputy division chief Datuk Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii opened an account for the #FreeNajib fund on 6 July 2018.
The fund has collected RM261,000 by July 2018.
Contrast this with the Tabung Harapan Malaysia.

MACC denies freezing bank account with funds for Najib’s bail
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says it did not order a freeze on the bank account set up to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak post bail.
On Sunday, (July 8), news portal The Malaysian Insight reported MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki (pic) as saying that concerned parties should refer to the bank, and not MACC, for clarification.
“In fact, I should not be commenting on this since they (supporters) did not point the finger at us. But to make things clear, MACC did not freeze the account,” he said.
“Concerned parties should enquire with the bank,” he said, declining to comment further.
Pekan Wanita Umno chief Datuk Zalmah Abdul Rahman had previously told news portal The Malay Mail on Saturday (July 7) that the Bank Rakyat account set up to help pay for Najib’s RM1mil bail had been frozen.

Umno’s Datuk Zalmah Abdul Rahman said a Bank Rakyat account set up to help pay Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s RM1 million bail has been frozen. The Pekan Wanita Umno chief told Malay Mail she learnt about the suspension at 7am today.
“Yes. This morning. It is true.
“This is Bank Rakyat. This one is only in Pekan. I don’t know about other places, but this account was opened by Pekan Umno division,” she said when contacted.
“We only opened one account and that is in Bank Rakyat,” she emphasised.
At the time of writing, Zalmah said she was still unable to bank in cash to the account.
Malay Mail understands that this is the only bank account set up for Najib’s bail fund which has been frozen.
