KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — The High Court here granted today a stay to halt the Election Commission (EC) from gazetting 949 members of the army and their spouses as voters in Segamat, Johor.

Justice Datin Azizah Nawawi allowed 48 voters from Segamat leave for their application for judicial review of the EC’s gazettement.

Case management is slated for January 16.

On Oct 31, DAP claimed that the Segamat camp, which was being developed, had more than a thousand newly-registered army voters.

Its Mengkibol assemblyman, Tan Hong Pin, said the base was scheduled to be completed in April 2018, but 1,051 army voters had been newly registered in the constituency.

The Segamat parliamentary seat is held by MIC president Dr S Subramaniam, who won it by a majority of 1,217 votes against PKR’s Chua Jui Meng in the general election of May 2013.

Johari explains why officers transferred to Segamat army camp

November 28, 2017

Deputy minister says even though the camp is not ready, the men already have duties there.
.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Defence Minister Johari Baharum today said the military has already started transferring officers to the Segamat army base in Johor although it was not completed yet.

He said it was not unusual for army personnel to be stationed in a camp that was in the midst of construction if they were needed for operations there.

Replying to Anthony Loke (DAP-Seremban), he told the Dewan Rakyat that there were also other bases, such as the 5th Battalion Border Regiment in Sarawak, that needed officers to be transferred there although the bases were not yet ready.

“There are tasks that need to be undertaken in those areas.

“Even though the camp is not ready, the officers already have work that they need to do there,” Johari said.
.
On Nov 1, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the claim made no sense.

“Nobody in his right mind would want to go to a place which is not conducive to live in,” he said.

“It is also crazy to transfer military personnel without preparing housing there because those sent there will not vote for us (ruling Barisan Nasional). Logically speaking, that makes no sense,” he added.

Johor DAP files 1,051 objections on army voters in Segamat

Published:     Modified:

Mengkibol assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin said today that objections have been filed against all 1,051 army voters found to be transferred to the Segamat camp, which is still under construction.

Speaking during a press conference at electoral reform coalition Bersih’s office in Petaling Jaya, Tan said funds were raised to cover the objection costs of names found in the 2017 third quarter Supplementary Electoral Roll (RDPT), which was put on display from Oct 25 to Nov 6.

“Yesterday, we had submitted the objections. We collected RM10,000 to pay for the objections.

“We are worried that if the objections are rejected, there’s a high risk that we have to pay over RM200,000, (but) that’s a consequence that we must face,” Tan, who is also Johor DAP Youth chief, said.

Any individual who wishes to register an objection with the EC will have to pay RM10 and if the objection is rejected, an additional cost of up to RM200 can be imposed.

While the Segamat camp was initially targeted for completion in April next year, Tan further said that DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang, during his visit to the construction site last Friday, discovered the sign which displayed the work completion date had “gone missing”.

“So now we don’t know whether it will be completed tomorrow or next year,” he pointed out, although adding there is no justification to register new voters in the current third quarter’s electoral roll.

More army voters in camps under construction, claims Bersih

Published:     Modified:

Electoral reform coalition Bersih said today that it has discovered more new army voters are being transferred into two camps in Bera, Pahang, and Hutan Melintang, Perak, which are still under construction.

Bersih deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Shaari said the discovery was made following a similar revelation by Johor DAP last week of army voters being transferred into the yet to be completed Segamat camp in Johor.

In reference to the 2017 third quarter Supplementary Electoral Roll (RDPT), Shahrul said 1,234 new army voters were found to be registered in the Bera parliamentary seat held by Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, while another 1,411 new army voters have been registered in Hutan Melintang, a state seat under the Bagan Datoh parliamentary constituency held by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Our analysis showed that these transfers happened in seats won (by BN) with a slim majority in the last 13th general election.

“In particular, these three seats were won by ministers,” said Shahrul Aman during a press conference at Bersih’s office in Petaling Jaya.

The Segamat seat is currently held by Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam, who won it with a 1,217 majority against former health minister Chua Jui Meng from PKR.

Ismail won in Bera with a majority of 2,143 votes against PKR’s Zakaria Abdul Hamid, while Zahid defended his Bagan Datoh seat for the fifth term, with a 2,108 majority against PKR’s Madhi Hasan.

“This clearly shows that the transfers were politically motivated and intended to influence the outcome of the elections through early or postal votes,” Shahrul claimed.

Bersih discovers 2 incomplete army camps with registered voters

zzzbb

PETALING JAYA: Free and fair elections watchdog Bersih 2.0 claims to have discovered two army camps with a total of 2,645 voters although they are still under construction.

Its chairperson Maria Chin said the names were discovered by Bersih’s ground teams during the display of the 3rd quarter draft of the Supplementary Electoral Roll of 2017.

“It is unconstitutional as the voters need to be living in the area in order to cast ballots there. These camps are still under construction,” she said during a press conference at Bersih 2.0 office here today.

The two army camps claimed by Bersih to be still under construction are Bera Camp in Pahang and Hutan Melintang Camp in Perak.

The present Bera MP is Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob who won by a 2,143-vote majority against PKR’s Zakaria Abdul Hamid in 2013.

The Hutan Melintang camp is located within the Bagan Datuk parliamentary constituency whose MP is Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid won the seat with a majority of 2,108 votes against PKR’s Madhi Hasan in 2013.

Several days ago, DAP had claimed the Segamat army camp, which is also under construction, has 1,079 newly registered army voters.

The Segamat parliamentary seat is held by MIC president S Subramaniam, who won it by a majority of 1,217 votes against PKR’s Chua Jui Meng in 2013.

Maria asked the Election Commission (EC) whether the voters in the three constituencies were told their names had been transferred there.

Bersih steering committee member Rama Ramanathan claimed the army voters were moved to the three new camps to ensure the survival of the three ministers if they stood for re-election.

Patriot: New voters at other new army camps too?

November 6, 2017

Group comprising army and police veterans warns 3 new army camps may also have new voters registered there, like what happened at the yet-to-be-completed Segamat camp.

zzzbc.jpg

PETALING JAYA: Will there be a shift of army voters to the three other new army bases currently being built as well, the Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) questioned today.

Patriot, which comprises army and police veterans, was referring to the Segamat army base which is scheduled to be completed in April 2018 but reportedly already has 1,051 military personnel registered to vote in that area.

Patriot president Brigadier-General (Rtd) Mohd Arshad Raji said it is possible that a similar game plan would be used for the new army bases in Bera, Paloh and Hutan Melintang.

“We are unsure if it is true that there are new camps being built there and if a shift of army voters has already been done.

“This issue should be put forth to the defence minister and the deputy defence minister,” Arshad said during a press conference here today.

He added that the Election Commision (EC) should also probe further into this issue.
