Marina laughs off ‘Trump-esque’ attacks on her and Mahathir
Social activist also dismisses report lodged against her by a Malay rights group for allegedly ‘liking’ a Twitter post in support of the LGBT community.
KUALA LUMPUR: Marina Mahathir, the eldest daughter of Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been dragged into the line of fire amid increasing attacks against her father in anticipation of the coming general election.
Just a day after she defended Mahathir, who was accused of lying about his real name, a Malay rights group reported her to the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) for allegedly supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual (LGBT) community.
The group, Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM), claimed Marina had done this by “liking” a Twitter post suggesting that LGBT couples be recognised and allowed to adopt abandoned children.
When asked what she thought of the attempts to demonise her and her father, the social activist said her detractors “must come from the Trump school of politics”.
“You can quote me on that,” she told reporters when met after the launch of ZafigoX here today.
She was referring to United States President Donald Trump’s brand of politics which has been heavily criticised by the American press for being “bizarre” and highly controversial.
She also laughed off the report lodged by JMM, saying she had “liked” a lot of Twitter posts.
“Go look at my Twitter feed. It’s ‘like like like like’. I think these are people who don’t have much to do with their time.
“I don’t even know who they are.”
When asked if she was concerned over the attacks on Mahathir’s image and credibility, Marina said the former prime minister was a “veteran” who knew how to handle the political pressure.
“I don’t worry about all these.

Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) has reported social activist Marina Mahathir to the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) to “liking” a Twitter post that was favourable of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual (LGBT) community.
Federal Territories JMM chief Faizan Mohd Nor lodged a report against Marina asking Jawi to arrest Marina and check on her faith.
“By liking (the Twitter post), it means she is supporting it. Don’t like if you don’t support it. We (JMM) are worried because we are against the LGBT.
“We suggested (to Jawi) that they arrest Marina because she is a public figure, she is the daughter of a respected Malay leader,” he told journalists after lodging a report at the Jawi office in Kuala Lumpur.
Faizan said he was worried that Marina could influence the public due to her stature. Marina is the daughter of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The report was received by Jawi communications officer Nadia Zammil.
The tweet which was a subject of Faizan’s complaint was by Twitter user Mrym.
Mrym in the Twitter posting had suggested that it would be good if LGBT couples were recognised as they then can adopt children who are discarded by straight couples.
