The Straits Times (Singapore), ANN: At least two syndicates have been preying since 2015 on tourists gambling in casinos in the Philippines, with the police tallying 11 kidnap victims so far, including a Singaporean rescued on Tuesday.
“These two groups are composed mostly of Chinese nationals and Singaporean nationals. Singaporean nationals, but also of Chinese descent. They always target Chinese and Singaporean (gamblers),” national police chief Ronald de la Rosa told reporters yesterday.
On Tuesday, an anti-kidnapping unit rescued Singaporean Wu Yan, 48, from 14 men holding her captive in a room in a condominium in Paranaque City, an hour south of the capital Manila.

Singaporean woman kidnapped by loan shark syndicate in Manila rescued

A Singaporean woman, Wu Yan, was rescued on Tuesday after being abducted at the lobby of the Solaire casino in Manila, Phillipines and held hostage at a nearby hotel for four days.

The 48-year-old was kidnapped by a loan shark syndicate under the guise of being escorted to another casino as she was gambling and taken to the Bayview International Towers where she was beaten and intimidated by her captors who demanded US$180,000 from her.

Police were alerted to the case by Wu Yan’s friend who received a ransom call. About 50 Phillipine police officials were put on the case and rescued Wu Yan after the casino helped to trace the taxi which was used to kidnap the woman to the Bayview International Towers.

They staked out the hotel for a whole night until they received a valuable lead the next day when a security guard reported seeing Wu Yan’s leg being dragged into an apartment. She had tried to escape from her captors but was not successful.

The police immediately busted the apartment where they found Wu Yan and 14 syndicate members, most of whom were sleeping. A total of 45 individuals were later arrested in connection to the case, comprising of 43 Chinese nationals and 2 Malaysians between the ages of 25 and 35. 15 of them were “positively identified” by Wu Yan.

Philippines arrests 44 for kidnapping Singaporean

July 20, 2017

Two Malaysians, along with 42 Chinese suspects, were arrested after her rescue and would be charged with kidnapping, police said.
.

MANILA: Forty-four Chinese and Malaysian suspects have been detained in the Philippines over the kidnapping and beating of a Singaporean woman abducted at a Manila casino, authorities said Thursday.

Police found the victim Wu Yan, 48, at a Manila condominium on Tuesday, a day after her abduction by two Malaysian members of the gang, Justice Undersecretary Erickson Balmes said in a statement.

“(She) was held, deprived of her right to liberty and was beaten and threatened by her kidnappers who demanded $180,000 for her release,” Balmes added.

Two Malaysians, along with 42 Chinese suspects, were arrested after her rescue and would be charged with kidnapping, police said.

“The group was believed to be responsible (for) the series of kidnapping incidents perpetrated against foreign nationals who are high roller casino players in recent months,” Balmes said.

He gave no details of the other supposed abductions nor what had happened to the victims.
.
Abelardo Borromeo, spokesman for the Philippine police’s anti-kidnapping group, said the gang members were also believed to be part of a loan sharking syndicate operating at a glittering strip housing mega-casinos fronting Manila Bay.

The victim was playing baccarat at one of the casinos there when the two Malaysian suspects “befriended” her and invited her to play in another casino in the area, Borromeo said.

But the suspects instead brought her to the condominium and demanded a ransom, he added.
