BUKIT MERTAJAM: It supposedly started three months ago when a police officer was contacted via WhatsApp to meet up with a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer.
The 38-year-old MACC assistant superintendent allegedly wanted to meet the police officer in Putrajaya but the latter declined. This was followed by numerous messages over the next few months.
On June 5, the police officer was told by a friend that the MACC officer had asked for RM3,000 a month or else he would be arrested by the MACC.
Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said: “The MACC officer claimed he was in charge of monitoring illegal gambling activities.
“The police officer met the suspect at about 9.30pm on Thursday at a petrol kiosk in Seberang Jaya where the demand was made”
The suspect then asked the police officer to turn up with the money the next day, ACP Nik Ros Azhan said in a statement yesterday.
“At 10.20pm on Friday, they met at a restaurant in Taman Machang Bubok where the suspect was handed the money.
“He was subsequently arrested and brought to the district police headquarters for questioning.

MACC officer held for demanding hush money from cop, RM3,000 seized
.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 ― The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that one of its officers was arrested in Penang last night, purportedly for blackmailing a policeman in a gambling case.
The 37-year-old anti-graft officer was picked up in Machang Bubok, Bukit Mertajam about 10pm, Malay daily Harian Metro reported.
“In the raid, police seized about RM3,000 in cash from him,” the paper cited an unnamed source saying.
According to the source further, the MACC man is suspected of having solicited hush money from the unidentified policeman who is said to have protected a gambling racket for the past two years.
A remand order is being sought to hold the MACC for further questioning into the blackmail ad bribery case against him, the source added.
In a statement today, the MACC said there can be no compromise on the law even if any of its officers are involved.
“Such an act does not represent the commission that always upholds the principle of the rule of law and the constitution in carrying out its entrusted responsibility.
“MACC will not budge an inch on its stand, even if there are officers found to have committed a crime, stern action will be taken against them for tarnishing MACC’s reputation and good name,” it said.
