Professor: What was school doing while boy’s legs were turning black?
PETALING JAYA: A university professor has urged authorities to investigate how long a person has to be beaten before his bruises turn black.
He was commenting on the case involving 11-year-old private religious school pupil Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, whose legs turned black after he was allegedly beaten by an assistant warden.
Thaqif underwent double amputation of his legs on Friday to prevent infection and according to Bernama, he is scheduled for an amputation of his right arm today.
Federation of National Associations of al-Quran Tahfiz Institutions (Pinta) president Mohd Zahid Mahmood had claimed the boy was only beaten on one sole of his foot, based on the school’s CCTV recording.
Speaking to FMT, prof Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi of UCSI University raised the question of how long it would have taken for the boy’s legs to turn black, and what the school’s management had been doing all that time.
“I’m not a medical doctor. So, I don’t know how long it would take for the boy’s legs to turn black like that.
“My issue here is that the management and the school’s principal seem to be washing their hands of this affair.”
Beating the sole is torture! It is called falanga in the Middle East.
The principal of a tahfiz school in Baling, Kedah, Abdul Rahman Yahya Tohar, “Even if a student is caned, it would be done on a less painful spot on the body such as the sole, but that seldom happens – only if the student is really stubborn.”
This principal has never been beaten on the sole or he would not have said that it was a less painful part of the body!
“Falanga torture (beatings on the foot soles) produces local chronic pain and severe walking difficulties.”
“The use of falanga (beatings on the soles of the feet) is a torture method which deliberately aims at inflicting intense pain in the feet and lower legs. The method was originally used as legal punishment but is nowadays used more systematically as a torture method, especially in the Middle East and the Far East. Years after torture the foot pain often persists and contributes to severe disabilities, even when walking moderate distances.”
Byard RW, Singh B. Forensic Sci Med Pathol. 2012 Sep;8(3):320-2. doi: 10.1007/s12024-011-9298-6. Epub 2011 Nov 22.
Forensic case study of man who was subjected to falanga and died en route to hospital. “In conclusion, falanga represents a very specific and localized form of torture that may be identified acutely, as in the reported case, by swelling and bruising of the feet, but which in the long term may be more difficult to diagnose due to the non-specificity of findings.”

‘CCTV recording shows boy beaten only on one sole’

“We obtained the information during a visit to the school and meeting with the principal and teachers,” he said after attending the presentation of aid to registered religious schools by Prime Minister Najib Razak here.
Zahid said Pinta was considering engaging legal counsel to defend the school and the assistant warden.
Meanwhile, the principal of a tahfiz school in Baling, Kedah, Abdul Rahman Yahya Tohar, said the standard procedure in such schools prohibited the beating of students.
“Whatever the wrongdoing committed, it would only be recorded and brought to the attention of the principal, and the disciplinary actions might include a fine, suspension, or expulsion,” he said, adding that emotional disturbance could have been the cause of the incident in Johor.
“Even if a student is caned, it would be done on a less painful spot on the body such as the sole, but that seldom happens – only if the student is really stubborn,” he said.
