‘New Malaysia’ should be better than previous governments, says Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The New Malaysia, a label now popularly used to describe the new Pakatan Harapan Government after the May 9 general election, should be “certainly better” than the previous administration ruling the country, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
.
In the interview with Investvine director Imran Saddique and correspondent Firoz Abdul Hamid, the prime minister also spoke about corruption in the civil service.

“They saw opportunities for making money for themselves and didn’t hesitate to keep away from such temptations.

“Seeing the leader of the government himself being accused of corruption, we find that many of them are involved in corrupt activities and of course we cannot have those people continuing because the perception of things, their ethics towards things are not what is expected from civil servants,” he added.

Wait for the denials…
They will come fast and think.

First reaction:

(3) Having said that, I will look into the breach of Section 29(4) of the MACC Act when DAP leaders made press conference about the report.

(2) It is clear this report is politically motivated but nonetheless, I will assure the public that I will give full cooperation to MACC.

: More than half of civil servants under 40 are corrupt

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today revealed that 54 percent of Malaysian government officers below the age of 40 are corrupt.

Sharing the shocking revelation at a joint-forum with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry here, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil attributed the corruption among young civil servants to today’s demanding lifestyle.

“We have cases where junior government officers and clerks can afford to buy the latest iPhone models and drive expensive cars. Their flashy lifestyle does not match their measly pay as young officers and administrative assistants under the government pay scale.”

His views were supported by MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner, Datuk Azam Baki.

“Corruption in this country is getting serious. Based on our statistics, 665 cases were filed against government officers last year. And as of February 2017, we have detained 548 civil servants for graft.

“This is why MACC has been more aggressive in combating graft among the civil servants since last August.”

MACC has set a three-year target to clean up the Malaysian public sector, said Azam.

A survey by Transparency International (TI) found that Malaysians and Vietnamese viewed their respective countries as having the most severe corruption problem.

The survey, from July 15, 2015 to January this year, obtained the feedback of more than 20,000 citizens in 16 Asia Pacific countries.

The questions posed included if citizens believed the level of corruption has changed, how is the government fighting graft, how corrupt are the police and if people felt empowered to fight corruption.

The survey also questioned respondents on whether they had given bribes themselves.

According to the survey, Malaysia and Vietnam performed the worst, with not a single positive rating to the questions.

“In these countries, the governments were rated poorly in their fight against corruption, people saw widespread corruption among the police, and many thought that corruption is on the rise.
