Umno may risk breaking up BN if it tables Act 355, says Liow
Umno may risk breaking up BN if the ruling coalition’s dominant party wilfully presents the amendment to Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 in Parliament, warned MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.
This may happen if the government tables something similar or exactly the same with the motion on Act 355 proposed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, he added.
“Even though (we) have only seven parliamentarians in Parliament, we will vote against it,” he said in an interview with Sin Chew Daily.
If Umno disregards the dissenting voices from the component parties, Liow added, then it would be the culprit for breaking the BN spirit.
“The party which pushes for the unconstitutional bill and even votes for it, will be the culprit. It is Umno that would go against the BN spirit, not MCA.”
Would BN continue to exist without its spirit intact, he asked.

Is the game up for Umno’s BN partners?
They have been silent in the face of a virtual directive to support the hudud bill.
By Ravinder Singh
The non-Muslim Barisan Nasional parties seem to have suddenly lost the brashness they previously demonstrated in voicing their opposition to RUU 355, also known as Hadi Awang’s hudud bill. Notice how silent they are in the face of a stern statement from Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan.
Ahmad Maslan has told them that they cannot oppose the bill when it is tabled by the government. We await their reactions to this directive. They cannot opt for silence, for silence means consent.
When they said they opposed the bill, did they do so because they felt safe going against a proposal by an opposition party instead of Umno?
Now that the game plan has changed, will they, in “the BN spirit of consensus”, do as directed by Ahmad Maslan, or will they have the courage to tell him that they are not opposing any individual or party, but are opposing RUU 355 no matter who tables it.
Or is the game up? Were the threats to leave Cabinet posts just a lot of hot air?

‘BN components can’t object to Act 355 amendments’
BN component parties will not be able to object against amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) once the relevant bill is taken over by the Federal Government.
According to Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, BN component parties are compelled to support the bill as part of the ruling coalition.
“Before this we hear that MCA didn’t like (the planned amendments) to Act 355. MIC objected, and Gerakan objected too.
“When we asked them why they opposed, the answered ‘How can we not? (The bill) was brought by (PAS president Abdul) Hadi (Awang)’,” said told the Umno Overseas Club annual general meeting in PWTC today.
Abdul Hadi had tabled a motion to amend Act 355 during the Dewan Rakyat sitting last month. The matter would be debated during the next Dewan Rakyat session in March.
When the motion moves to the second reading stage, it would be taken over and read by Islamic Affairs Minister Jamil Khir Bahrom.
.
Previously, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai vowed to quit cabinet if Abdul Hadi’s bill is passed.
But now that Putrajaya will take over the bill as their own, it is unsure what is the new position of BN component parties.
Ahmad added that the bill was how Umno would cement its “unity” with PAS, and was something that would be brought up in the afterlife.
“When asked (in the afterlife) about what we did about the development of Islam in Malaysia, we can’t answer that we didn’t support amendments to Act 355,” he said.
