Jamal: Let red and yellow face off
Red Shirts movement leader says group will ignore any police advice this time around and go ahead with their planned counter-Bersih 5 rally.
KUALA LUMPUR: Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos today said he would ignore any advice given by the police when organising a counter-rally against the upcoming Bersih 5 gathering.
Jamal, who is also the Sungai Besar Umno division chief, said last year the group had heeded the advice of the men in blue.
But this time around, they would go ahead with its counter rally if Bersih 2.0 decides to ignore the law.
“Let red and yellow face off.
“Bersih and gang, wait for us and see what happens,” he said, alluding to Bersih 2.0’s trademark colour.
In 2015, the Red Shirts decided to postpone its gathering to counter the Bersih 4 gathering following advice from the police.
On Sept 16, the Red Shirts finally held a rally to “uphold Malay dignity” in response to the earlier huge Chinese participation in Bersih 4.

Maria Chin is opposition’s ‘circus animal’, says Jamal
Sungai Besar Umno chief Mohd Jamal Yunus has again threatened to hold a counter-demonstration against the Bersih 5 rally, this time describing the movement and its leader Maria Chin Abdullah, as an ‘opposition dog’.
“We know Bersih 5 is the opposition’s pet dog and we know Maria Chin is just a circus animal.
“Like a circus where the ringmaster is trying to put on a show, I consider Maria Chin to be the opposition’s circus animal that is barking like a dog that has just given birth.
“So I welcome Bersih’s arrival. Announce the date for the rally quickly, we are getting impatient with waiting. We are ready,” he told a press conference in Klang yesterday.
Maria Chin had previously announced that the Bersih 5 rally would be held in November. The exact date is to be announced at a Sept 14 press conference.

Bersih 5 is on, rally to push for action on 1MDB cases
Electoral reform coalition Bersih today announced the fifth instalment of its rally, this time to push for further action on the 1MDB case.
Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said not protesting is not an option, following the recent US Department of Justice’s civil suit to seize more than US$1 billion in assets linked to 1MDB.
“We will be organising a Bersih 5 rally to pressure for greater accountability and action.”

IGP: Bersih 5 must focus on fair elections, nothing else
Nation’s top cop also says that organisers Bersih 2.0, must clearly lay out the purpose of the rally and ensure they do not break any laws.
PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0’s upcoming rally should not stray from its demands for a free and fair election in the country, says Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar.
“They (Bersih 2.0) should stay focused on the issue of fair elections which were their objectives from the beginning,” Khalid told FMT when contacted.
The nation’s top cop was responding to an earlier announcement by the chairman of the electoral watchdog, Maria Chin Abdullah, that a rally would be held to protest the government’s continuing “denial and inaction” over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
Khalid added, “Their (Bersih 2.0) purpose of demonstrating must be clearly laid out.”
The IGP also said he had no qualms about the group’s intentions to hold the rally, provided “they followed the provisions of the law.” He was referring to the group’s right to assemble under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Last week, Khalid said the police would not approve any street demonstrations demanding Najib Razak resign as Prime Minister.
He also said “it was not right” for Bersih 2.0 to hold a rally to demand that Najib step down as there were other means to get a prime minister to resign.

IGP making ’empty threats’, says Bersih
PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 took the nation’s top cop to task for threatening their plans to hold a rally in response to actions undertaken by US prosecutors over funds allegedly misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
“We have not said we are holding a rally. We are still in the process of discussion with NGOs. They should not threaten anyone as this is our right to assembly but at the moment they are making empty threats,” the electoral reform group’s chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah told FMT.
She was commenting on Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar’s statement yesterday that police would not approve any street demonstrations demanding Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) suits over USD3.5 billion that was allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
Khalid had also said “it was not right” for Bersih 2.0 to hold a rally to demand that Najib step down as there were other means to get the PM to resign.
Chin however noted that Bersih 2.0 have yet to call for a rally.
“We don’t know what is he responding to. We are still in discussions. It’s not official yet.”

IGP @KBAB51 says no to #Bersih5 rally if meant toppling @NajibRazak
The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) cannot hold Bersih 5 rally if it wants to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
“We will not allow it because there is a way to ask the prime minister to step down as stipulated in the law,” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
“If they ask the prime minister to step down according to the law, then we can accept it,” he said.
If all quarters organise the rally according to the law, then the police would help facilitate it, he added.

Malaysian opposition parties say would join #Bersih5 rally

KAJANG — Opposition leaders have expressed support for a Bersih 5 rally mooted in response to US authorities’ bid to seize over US$1 billion (S$1.36 billion) in assets allegedly obtained using funds misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
PKR deputy president Azmin Ali concurred with electoral watchdog group Bersih 2.0 that the development in the US merited a response by Malaysian citizens to demonstrate their displeasure with the government.
“Yes, we will discuss that. This is the right time to mobilise all the support among the civil societies, political parties and also citizens of Malaysia,” he told reporters when met at the sidelines of an open house here.
“This is a real issue that can bring us together for the next elections. We will discuss that in the next meeting with the civil societies,” Mr Azmin said.
PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the opposition would back the latest Bersih gathering as it has always done, adding that the underlying demands for free and fair elections that formed the basis of previous editions were never met.

DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke said his party was open to participating as long as it was invited by Bersih 2.0.
“We will mobilise people as necessary if we decided to go ahead with it,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted on Saturday (July 23).
Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) communications director Khalid Samad urged the organiser to ensure the participation of as many kindred groups as possible, including a proposed new party by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

PKR Youth backs Bersih 5 rally to urge Najib’s resignation
PKR Youth has voiced their support for the mooted Bersih 5 rally to urge for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation.
This comes after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) forfeiture lawsuit earlier this week, where they are seeking the return of assets allegedly stolen from 1MDB funds.
“We think we need the Bersih 5 rally to save the country from being ruined further.
“Bersih 5 is the best medium for the Malaysian people right now, (that is to) gather peacefully, as is enshrined in the constitution, to claim back our rights as citizens,” said PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin in a statement today.
The rally is needed because the 1MDB scandal has clearly put the sovereignty and the economy of the country in dire straits, he said, adding that the prime minister’s silence on these issues is a further betrayal to the people.
…
He also said that PKR Youth is willing to offer their help in mobilising as many youths and Malaysian citizens as possible, regardless of ethnicity, religion or political views, to come out for the rally.

Protest if you dare, says Umno leader

…
PETALING JAYA: Go ahead and protest, an Umno leader has told those planning a street demonstration following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) lawsuits on Wednesday.
Umno Supreme Council Member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said that if the people dared to protest, they should also be prepared to face the consequences.
The deputy agriculture and agro-based industry minister told FMT he also believed the protest, confirmed to be on the cards by Bersih 2.0 Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, would not attract much of a crowd.
“In fact, I don’t think some of the Opposition members are even interested in the idea as not many of them are willing to take the risk of being thrown into prison for breaking the law.
“Talk can lah. But when the time comes when they think they might be arrested, all will start scrambling.
“As it is, they are making so much noise even after being locked up for one, two days. So, I want to ask them; how many of you are willing to go to prison?”

Bersih 5 on the cards?
Former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenavasan says peaceful rally could take place to demand Najib’s removal.
PUTRAJAYA: Bersih 2.0 is mulling organising a peaceful rally to demand for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) action to seize assets purchased with money allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
“It is being considered,” the electoral reform group’s former chairperson, Ambiga Sreenevasan said at a press conference here today.

She said the government cannot sit back and “pretend that nothing has happened” and had to act in a responsible manner.
…
Also present were Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik. The former prime minister supported the call for the rally but lamented that Malaysians “were a timid lot”.
