Only RM2 for lifetime membership in new party: Mahathir
KUALA LUMPUR — Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it will only cost RM2 (70 Singapore cents) for a lifetime membership in his new party, Malay language daily Sinar Harian reported.
The daily quoted him as saying so, while calling on Malay’s to support the party as his former party Umno had “gone off track”.
“Why do we want to establish a new party? Because the old party (Umno) that we established in the past have gone off track, because its driver is not good,” he was quoted saying in a speech at an Aidilfitri open house hosted by Ayer Hitam assemblyman Mukhriz Mahathir in his constituency.
“That is why this new party will be formed and it needs the support of all Malays because only this party will save us all,” he added.
Earlier this month, Dr Mahathir confirmed that he will be a founding member of a new political party that will ally with Pakatan Harapan to ensure straight fights against the BN ruling coalition in the coming general elections.

‘New party line-up’ denounced as a lie
Mahathir’s party supposedly to be named Parti Melayu Baru Bersatu, with Gani Patail, Zeti Aziz, Rafidah Aziz, Bilqis Hijjas and Hishammuddin Rais supposedly in the leadership committee.
PETALING JAYA: A list purporting to show the names and positions of leaders in Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recently announced party is making the rounds, but has been denounced as a lie.
The list says that the party is to be named Parti Melayu Baru Bersatu.
Former trade minister Rafidah Aziz, former Attorney-General Gani Patail and former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhbar Aziz are supposed to be on the committee.
Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, fellow Umno rebel Shafie Apdal and Dr Mahathir’s son Mukhriz are named among the leaders.
Among others are Bilqis Hijjas, who was recently charged and acquitted for dropping yellow balloons in a protest against Najib Razak at a function at the Pavilion shopping centre, and activist Hishammuddin Rais.
However Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, who was also named, dismissed the list and said the people should use their minds to judge its authenticity.
“You should use your logic. These are the works of the dirty minded, the bad and the ugly…That is a list prepared by the idiots.”
Youth activist Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman told FMT: ”The list is not true. It’s completely false.” while former Batu Kawan Umno division chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan also denied any knowledge of the list.
Mukhriz, Muhyiddin to lead Dr M’s new party, ex-NST chief says
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 ― Veteran newsman Datuk A Kadir Jasin, who was present at the Save Malaysia meeting which discussed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement of a new party, said that ousted Umno members Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin or Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir will likely lead the new movement.
He added that Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, who quit the party after he was suspended, will likely play a pivotal role in his home state of Sabah.
“Two Umno leaders sacked from the party are former Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin and Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. A Vice President, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, who had his membership suspended left voluntarily.
“They are expected to lead the new party. Shafie was present at yesterday’s meeting. He is expected to play a major role is his home state, Sabah,” the former New Straits Times group editor-in-chief wrote on his blog today.

Anwar welcomes Dr Mahathir’s new party, says time for opposition parties to ‘consolidate’ forces
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Friday (July 15) welcomed Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s plans to form a new political party, saying it was time for all opposition parties to unite and work together.
“Opposition must stay solid, consolidate and work. It is time we must consolidate,” he told reporters as he was being escorted out of the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday.
“We look forward to engaging with them. I think it’s a positive thing,” the jailed PKR de facto leader added.
But Anwar said it was up to former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to decide what the new political party’s plans would be.
“We are waiting for Muhyiddin to decide because Muhyiddin is making the decision,” he said, without elaborating on what he meant by this.
Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir confirmed on Thursday that he will be a founding member of a new political party which will be part of the Save Malaysia movement as a “component party”.
He did not say, however, who will be leading the party.

Mahathir Mohamad to launch party to challenge PM Najib
KUALA LUMPUR (REUTERS) – Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday (July 14) announced plans for a new party that would join an opposition alliance in a bid to oust the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition led by scandal-tainted Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Speculation had been rife over the past week that Dr Mahathir, 91, Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister, was planning to start a party with three other former leaders of the United Malay National Organisation (Umno) which Mr Najib now leads. “We who oppose Najib cannot achieve victory unless we work together as a coalition,” said Dr Mahathir.
He added that he would not contest the next general election, due to be held in 2018, or position himself as a candidate for prime minister.

Dr M may lead new party, to join forces with Pakatan
More than a decade after stepping down as prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad might return to active politics in a bid to vanquish his latest foe, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The 91-year-old medical doctor-turned-politician could spearhead a new political party, comprising former Umno members.
According to former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, a meeting would be held with Pakatan Harapan leaders to discuss the matter.
“We will meet them on Thursday to talk about facing the next general election. We are considering the formation of a new party to be headed by Mahathir,” he told Malaysiakini.
“We will join forces with Harapan to fight wrongdoings, corruption, right the leadership of this country, and implement institutional reforms” he stressed.
The mulling of a new party comes weeks after former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin and Mahathir’s son Mukhriz were sacked from Umno for working with the opposition.
Muhyiddin has said that he is considering setting up a new political platform.
However, Khairuddin said both Muhyiddin and Mukhriz would be absent from Thursday’s meeting at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya, as they are currently overseas.
He added that former Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal, has also been invited to the meeting.
