Malaysia goes into highest alert over Jakarta bomb blasts

Malaysia has raised its alert level to the highest degree in the wake of the bombing incident in Jakarta.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar announced today that police have been placed on the highest alert to deter similar attacks from occurring on Malaysian soil.

“Increased security measures are in place at public places, such as shopping malls and tourist spots.

“Extra precautionary measures will also be implemented in border areas to prevent infiltration by terrrorists,” he said in a statement just hours after a deadly hail of bombs and gunfire left six dead and several others wounded in the Indonesian capital.

Khalid said that while the force was already on its highest alert footing due to the high tempo of terror incidents worldwide, the recent attack so close to home necessitated the precautions.

He gave his assurance to Malaysians that the men and women under his command would be on constant vigilance, monitoring developments and ensuring that the safety and security of all would be safeguarded.

At least six dead in Jakarta blasts, gunfight

*DEVELOPING STORY*

JAKARTA — Militants launched a gun and bomb assault in the centre of the Indonesian capital today (Jan 14), police said, in an attack that followed a threat by Islamic State fighters to put the country in their “spotlight”. At least six people have been killed.

The blasts, at around 10.30am (Singapore time) were close to a shopping centre, the Sarinah, where victims’ bodies were seen strewn on the ground. One blast was in a Starbucks cafe and security forces were later seen entering the building. Later in the afternoon, a fresh blast was heard near the Starbucks that was attacked earlier. The explosion occurred after about 25 anti-terror squad police stormed the cafe. After the explosion, several other police and medical personnel in white overalls were seen running to the cafe. Two ambulances also drove to the area, and were standing by, reported AP.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on a working visit in West Java town of Cirebon, has ordered security forces to hunt down the perpetrators and their network behind the attacks in Jakarta.

issued cryptic warning ahead of : Police

January 14, 2016

JAKARTA — The Islamic State group issued a cryptic warning before multiple blasts hit the Indonesian capital Jakarta today (Jan 14), killing at least four people, police said.

National police spokesman Anton Charliyan said it was not clear yet which group had carried out what the Indonesian president has termed “acts of terror”.

But he said that IS issued a cryptic warning before the attacks.

“The warning said there will be a concert in Indonesia and it will be international news,” he told a local radio station.

He did not give any further details, or say when the warning was issued.

Police foiled several terror plots in Indonesia last month, with some believed to be linked to IS.
