KUALA LUMPUR — Cinema posters and a billboard advertisement for a Hong Kong blockbuster film have been modified in Muslim-majority Malaysia to erase a half-man, half-pig character.

The Monkey King 2, an action-fantasy movie set to hit cinema screens during the Lunar New Year next month, has a star-studded cast including Gong Li and Aaron Kwok.

It is based on a Chinese novel about a monk who travels far and wide with his three disciples, including a half-man, half-pig character called Zhu Bajie.

Reports said the original posters showed the monk with all three disciples.

The film’s distributor Golden Screen Cinemas said the pig character was not censored on government instructions. It gave no reason for the modification.

“Movie distributors have the discretion to modify the movie poster to suit the local environment,” a spokeswoman told AFP today (Jan 6).

The deletion of the character attracted online ridicule on social media. One disgruntled fan called it “a sign of the time, the progressive Islamisation”.

HERE’S A GOOD STORY!

Local cinema chain TGV Cinemas today said it has not censored the part pig, part human character, Zhu Bajie, from a poster to promote the upcoming Hong Kong action fantasy film ‘Journey to the West – The Monkey King 2’.

Responding to Malaysiakini’s inquiry on Zhu Bajie’s disappearance from the poster, a TGV spokesperson in an e-mail instead said that it merely received the content and poster provided by the movie distributor.

“Currently, we do not have any information about this movie and we will update you once we received information,” said the spokesperson.

Will they next ban the Year of the Pig?

The report by Malaysiakini on the removal of a part human, part pig character from a billboard advertisement for the forthcoming Hong Kong action fantasy film Journey to the West has generated interesting reactions from netizens in the comments section on Facebook.

Netizens seem to be in agreement that the move to remove the character from the billboard is a silly act, with many expressing shock and confusion over the action.

Among them, netizens joke that the Chinese Year of the Pig may be next to go, while another lamented that other governments are pursuing space programmes while Malaysia is busy chasing porcine issues.

Below is a compilation of some of the more interesting comments from netizens on this issue:

Amulets Ice Ice: “Later, the Year of Pig on Chinese New Year might also be made illegal, including open houses, advertisements and anything related to the word and picture of pigs.”

Wan Abd Hamid: “I don’t mind this story, Journey to the West. Pigs are just pigs, it’s okay. What’s haram is only eating pigs. Looking at them is fine.”

Mohd Nur Hafiz: “Pigs you’re afraid of, liar. Corruption you’re not afraid of. Pigs are just living things, it’s not like you’re eating them. This is stupid.”

Yadin Ny Nyadin: “Other countries are busy building rockets to go to outer space, we are busy discussing a picture of a pig.”

Hermon van Ly: “Corruption, putting people in cement, snatch theft, that’s all okay. Pigs are the only thing not okay. Only in Malaysia.”

Nur Aisyah Vivian Mah: “What’s the problem? Pigs also get banned like this? First it was the keris, then the cross-shaped roofs and now pigs are being removed. Why aren’t those who hug each other in Malay dramas not banned? Enough is enough.”

Amirol Azery: “It’s only a picture of a pig, they’re not asking us to eat it. You get phobia from this, what is this? Enough of embarrassing us.”

Rudy Adad: “I laughed till my stomach hurt. It’s time for our thinking to rise to the professional level. I think nowadays things are getting weirder. Seems like there are things that just don’t make sense. Are you saying pigs cannot even be displayed?”

Theva Raj: “It’s no wonder the pig disappeared. The pig is busy thinking about what else to sell to China.”

Pig character disappears off KL billboard for HK film

zp

The character of a pig has disappeared off billboard in Kuala Lumpur advertising the Hong Kong action fantasy film ‘Journey to the West – The Monkey King 2’ due to be screened come Chinese New Year.

The original poster of the film, by a China and Hong Kong production house, showed the monk Tang Sanzang and his disciples Monkey King Sun Wukong, Sha Wujiang and Zhu Bajie.

Zhu Bajie, which is part human and part pig, is pictured on the right of the Monkey King in the poster but is missing on a billboard erected on Jalan Loke Yew.

The film’s title was placed in the same space where Zhu Bajie was in the original poster.

Zhu Bajie was equally absent from the poster in the official websites of major cinema chains Golden Screen Cinemas and TGV Cinemas.

Films screened in Malaysia have to go through vetting by the Film Censorship Board, under the purview of the Home Ministry.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed told Malaysiakini that the censorship board will make a decision “in the best interest of the country not the movie producer”.

“I think it must be because the movie did not follow the guidelines of the censorship board.

“Anyway it is too trivial an issue to comment on,” Nur Jazlan said.
