‘Keling’, a most racially sensitive word…
—
Keling, sometimes kling, is not a neutral word. Speaker or listener, you can’t escape the derogatory nature of the word.
“In the Chinese and Malay communities, keling is augmented into various words of their language to form new phrases that may considered offensive and to discriminate Indians.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keling)

As i was driving home yesterday after work, this old malay uncle attempted to make a u turn at a traffic light , skidded and fell down with the bike falling on him. so i pulled over n went to check on him. the bike was lifted by few bikers who stopped by as well and i noticed his right leg deformed with a wound with bone exposed indicating open fracture and he was complaining he couldnt feel his feet anymore . i introduced myself to help him and Pakcik responded in a rather shocking way..
Me : pakcik, selamat petang, saya …( didnt manage to finish my sentence)
pakcik : aku taknak keling datang dekat aku ke, tolong aku ke.. banyak orang boleh tolong..
Me : tak,saya…
pakcik : pergi aku cakap ……
shocked , and i moved from him as the public were also asking me to walk away. i moved away , called ambulance and waited ..
Ambulance arrived and i met the medical assistant, introduced myself and briefed him about what happened.he thanked me and went to stabilize the patient and when i was about to leave the scene, the medical assistant asked me loudly,
MEdical Assitant :doctor , ada check pak cik ke tadi ?
Me: tak. pakcik taknak saya sentuh dia .. So saya panggil ambulans n tunggu sini , pastikan takde orang gerakkan pakcik.
Pakcik : (smiling) saya taktahu awak doktor. doktor boLeh sentuh ..
Dunno what to say ady …
Before knowing im a doctor, i was a disgusting “keling”, cannot touch
After knowing , all the smiles n sorry ..

Accident victim tells doc, ‘I don’t want a Keling to touch me’
Medical doctor recounts how injured man refused to let a ‘keling’ touch him, but later apologises saying “I didn’t know you were a doctor. Doctor can touch.”
TAIPING: In racially-divisive Malaysia, a Facebook post by a young, Indian doctor recounts how she was hurled with a racist slur when trying to help an injured elderly Malay man.
Written on December 30, 2015, Dr Shalini Paramaswaran was driving home when an old Malay pakcik (uncle) skid and fell from his motorbike when attempting to make a U-turn.
She rushed to his aid, noted his deformed right leg with bone exposed and heard that he was unable to feel his feet.
“I introduced myself to help him,” she said, “and pakcik responded in a rather shocking way.” In front of the crowd that had gathered, he shooed her away with the words, “Aku tak nak keling datang dekat aku, tolong aku ke, banyak orang boleh tolong (I don’t want a ‘keling’ coming near me, or to help me, lots of people can help me)”.
‘Keling’ is regarded as a derogatory term referring to a person of Indian origin.
Members of the public then asked her to move away.
The shell-shocked doctor obliged and proceeded to call an ambulance. Upon arrival of the medical unit, Dr Shalini debriefed the paramedic who attended to the injured victim.
After ensuring that the Malay man was attended to, she was about to leave the accident site when the paramedic called out to her, asking if she had examined the man.
She replied, “No, he didn’t want me to touch him. So I called an ambulance instead and waited to ensure no one moved him.”
Overhearing the exchange, the man then smiled and said, “I didn’t know you were a doctor. Doctor can touch.”
Expressing her disbelief, she ended her post with this poignant remark, “Before knowing I’m a doctor, I was a disgusting ‘keling’, cannot touch. After knowing, all the smiles n sorry…”

Coverage
Doctor who stopped her vehicle to help an accident victim gets hurled with racist remarks.
In Malaysia as well as other parts of the world, it is a common practice to stop your vehicle and help out a motorist who’s just been in an incident.
Stopping your vehicle and attending to the said motorist may not seem like much but it goes a long way. Some motorists who see an accident take place before them do not stop their vehicle, not because they are cruel or inhumane, they likely feel that their help means little.
Anyone who’s ever been in an accident with bodily injuries will know that a motorist who stopped to help and turns out to be a doctor is a heavenly relief.
However, this story of a doctor when she stopped to help an injured motorist is emotion provoking.
Her being a doctor, she stopped her vehicle and tried to help the injured motorist with the kindest of intentions- however, the motorist’s response was not what she quite expected.
