The planned eviction of Kampung Mutiara villagers in Batu Ferringhi today has been postponed for safety reasons, police said.

It is learned that plans to demolish the houses were postponed for a month following a court order.

The situation had been tensed after villagers had threatened to form a human barricade to stop bulldozers from entering their village and demolishing their homes.

In making the announcement at the village before the 350 villagers, George Town police chief Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the court had allowed the demolition of the homes to be postponed for another month.

Shouts of Allahuakhbar (God is greater) could be heard throughout the village as the news was announced, The Star Online reported.

The Star Online had earlier reported Batu Ferringhi JKKP chairman Ismadi Abu Bakar as saying that about 69 families from 42 families would be affected if the demolition took place.

“We were tipped off by the police last night at around 8.30pm and (Bukit Bendera MP) Zairil (Khir Johari) and Cheu (Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu) came around 10pm.

“The police also told us to calm down and advised us not to interrupt,” he was quoted as saying.

Light Strike Force and plainclothes policemen were spotted patrolling the area as villagers began gathering at the entrance of Kampung Mutiara as early as 7am today.

Kg Mutiara folk cheer after demolition called off

GEORGE TOWN: Kampung Mutiara villagers have been given a second temporary reprieve from having their homes torn down following a vacant possession order by the landowner.

In making the announcement before the 350 villagers here Tuesday, George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the court had allowed the demolition exercise to be postponed for another month.

Shouts of Allahuakhbar (God is greater) could be heard throughout the village as the news was announced.

The crowd also cheered and clapped that the demolition had been called off.

Umno Bukit Bendera division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail said the matter was not over yet as the vacant possession order was still in effect.

“The most important thing now is that the landowner is ready and willing to negotiate with us,” he added.

GEORGE TOWN: Kampung Mutiara villagers were shocked to hear rumours yesterday that their village was about to be demolished.
In anticipation of demolition crews moving in, villagers and politicians from both sides of the divide camped by the roadside near the village in Batu Ferringhi in protest today.
Bukit Bendera member of parliament Zairil Khir Johari said the landowner had acted in haste with the eviction, despite knowing there was a pending court case to set aside the eviction.
“Firstly, there is an outstanding case pending hearing at the Court of Appeal on Jan 6.
“Secondly, Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon and the landowner are still in discussions.
“Thirdly, there is an offer letter to buy over the land at market rate. So, what is the hurry?” he told reporters here.
Bukit Bendera Umno chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail said police had applied to the court to declare the Kampung Mutiara eviction as “unsafe”.

“We’ve heard that the police are seeking to defer the eviction.”
