Dodgy History: Proving the Existence of Hang Tuah

10 May 2016

How ingenious, asking historians to prove a negative. But then, he is a politician, right?

Show concrete proof that Hang Tuah is a myth, Malacca CM challenges historians

MALACCA, May 9 — Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said historians and academicians must prove that Hang Tuah is a myth, and not depend on disclaimers and theories.

“People who say that Hang Tuah is a mythical figure must provide concrete proof. If they cannot do so, they should stop questioning Hang Tuah’s existence and not turn into a polemic that benefits no one,” he told Bernama here.

Historian Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim reportedly said a DNA test should be done to prove whether the existence of Hang Tuah was just a myth.

Meanwhile, Prof Dr Ahmat Adam accepted there existed such an admiral in the Malacca Sultanate, but rejected the admiral was Hang Tuah.

The historian claimed that the Malays suffered from inferiority complex and thus needed a hero in the form of Hang Tuah.

Here is a new twist to the ongoing debate about Hang Tuah….

30 April 2016

It’s not Hang Tuah, it’s ‘Hang Tu-ha’ or ‘Hang Toh’, says don

zht.jpg

…with the launch of a new book by Universiti Malaya’s Emeritus Professor Ahmat Adam, it would seem that even his name has been mispronounced for at least two centuries.

A historian by training, Ahmat told Malaysiakini that while this finding might not rest easy on some people, the laksamana’s name has to be set right.

“Malaysians have mispronounced ‘Hang Tuah’ for 200 years and it might be difficult for them to accept something new – that’s human nature – but we have to correct history,” he said in an interview after the launch yesterday.

Ahmat’s new book is called ‘Antara Sejarah dan Mitos: Sejarah Melayu & Hang Tuah dalam Historiografi Malaysia’ (‘Between History and Mythology: The Malay Annals & Hang Tuah in Malaysian Historiography’).“By applying philological methods, we have attained fresh evidence regarding this matter (on Hang Tuah’s name) from the old Javanese and Malay languages,” he explained.

A key indicator lies in the word ‘tuah’ itself, said the don.

“The word ‘tuah’ did not exist during the 17th century. The word used for ‘fortune’ then was pronounced “bahgia” or “baghe”. Therefore, we can’t neglect the importance of old Javanese or Malay (in helping us come to this conclusion),” Ahmat explained.

Where’s Hang Tuah’s grave?

By Roshidi Abu Samah – 18 December 2015 @ 11:14 AM

MALACCA: A special forum here yesterday to affirm the existence of Hang Tuah has instead raised another interesting and hotly debated historical fact — the exact location of the Malay warrior’s grave.
Participant Abu Huzaifah Hashim said Hang Tuah’s resting place was in Palembang, Indonesia, based on the Hikayat Hang Tuah manuscript by Tun Kolah, who was Hang Tuah’s cousin.
A panelist, Malaysian Institute of Historical and Patriotism Studies (Iksep) chairman Adjunct Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Jamil Mukmin, however, insisted that the grave was in Tanjung Kling near here according to information from a version of Sejarah Melayu (The Malay Annals) book by William Girdlestone Shellabear.
“The Sejarah Melayu book clearly stated that Hang Tuah died and was buried in Tanjung Kling with full honours,” he said at the forum.
Mohd Jamil said the polemic about the existence of Hang Tuah was not something new and had emerged since the 1950s.
“Nevertheless, 90 per cent of scholars and historians have agreed that Hang Tuah did exist and is not a myth,” he said, adding that Hang Tuah’s name was also etched in the books written and published by historians from Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Britain and Spain which was proof of his existence.

Another panelist, state Malaysian History Association secretary Jamil Jaamat, said Hang Tuah existed because the latter’s family genealogy could be seen and studied to this day.

Researchers: Give us RM1m to prove Hang Tuah existed

: Give us RM1m to prove Hang Tuah existed, researchers say

MALACCA, Dec 17 — A group of researchers is looking for funding of more than RM1 million to continue with its project to prove the existence Hang Tuah.

Project leader, Dr Rohaidah Kamarudin, from the Malay Language Department, Faculty of Modern Language and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia, said the group had spent about RM35,000, from their own pockets, on the project, carried out since a year ago.

“The fund is needed because there are a lot more to be done to prove Hang Tuah’s existence, including to look for the necessary evidence, like in Indonesia, Turkey and Japan, and to conduct DNA tests on them,” she told reporters after a forum on the existence of Hang Tuah here today.  It was opened by Malacca State Assembly Speaker Datuk Othman Muhammad.

Hang Tuah ‘did not exist’, claims historian

By ARMAN AHMAD – 12 December 2015 @ 11:48 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: Hang Tuah did not exist, and the claims that were made by some people who said they are his descendants are fables, asserts a damning report published in Berita Harian yesterday.

The article, which quotes Universiti Malaya’s Prof Dr Ahmat Adam, said Hang Tuah was a fictional character that existed in the classic texts of Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Hang Tuah only, therefore claims of a finding of a grave and artifact related to him need more in-depth research .

The grave that is said to belong to Hang Tuah was good for tourism, but it was not the real resting place of the legendary warrior, said Ahmat in the report.
Berita Harian quoted Ahmat as saying this at a history seminar organised by Universiti Malaya’s history department entitled ‘Wujudkah Hang Tuah?’.
In fact, the name ‘Hang Tuah’ did not exist in 15th and 16th century and was detected for the first time in Hikayat Acheh, which was written in the 17th century.
“Those who are historians must remember, Sejarah Melayu is fiction which can be termed literary history text but not historical text.

“The character of Hang Tuah was already mentioned in Hikayat Hang Tuah which was written before Sejarah Melayu, so it was a character that was borrowed into the copy,” said Ahmat in the Berita Harian report.

If Hang Tuah did not exist, who’s underneath?

Hang Tuah (Jawi:هڠ تواه) was a legendary Malay warrior who lived in Malacca during the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah in the 15th century. He was supposedly the most powerful of all the laksamanas, or admirals, and is considered by the Malays to be one of history’s greatest silat masters. Hang Tuah is held in the highest regard, even in present-day Malay culture, and is arguably the most well-known and illustrious warrior figure in Malay history and literature.

Hang Tuah real, met Da Vinci and wrote to ruler of Ryukyu kingdom: Gavin Menzies-level stuff.

‘Hang Li Po, Hang Tuah did not exist’

January 16, 2012

Historian Prof Khoo Kay Kim says that the Ming dynasty’s records do not mention the princess or the famous warrior. He also points out that early Malaysian history is based on stories.

PETALING JAYA: According to history, Chinese Princess Hang Li Po was the fifth wife of Malaccan Sultan Mansur Shah who reigned from 1456-1477.

During this period, there was also the legend of the Sultan’s five famous warriors, Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu. It is a tale of friendship and loyalty, which every Malaysian had heard.

However, renowned historian Prof Khoo Kay Kim told radio station BFM this morning that Hang Li Po and the five warriors never existed.

Speaking to FMT later, he explained: “The Chinese Ming dynasty of the 16th century does not have records on them. These are very well preserved records.”

The KDU college chancellor also said he had read the writings of two Western historians and another prominent historian Wang Gung Wu on the Ming records which did not mention the characters either.

“History must be based on empirical records. Historians must only accept written records,” he said, adding that empirical records available here were at best “skanky”.

“There is no evidence in the Malaysian records,” he said. “These are stories. Early Malaysian history is based on stories.”

“We have had many stories. Only recently historians have taken the trouble to research the early Malaysian history period. A lot of stories accepted in the past cannot be proven,” he added.
