Bersih 2.0: Jasa booklet celebrating ‘Red Shirts’ shows Putrajaya backed rally

By Syed Jaymal Zahiid

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 — The 100-plus page booklet lauding the “Red Shirt” rally on September 16 produced by a government agency is evidence of Putrajaya’s tacit support for the controversial event, polls reform group Bersih 2.0 asserted today.

Its chairman, Maria Chin Abdullah, said Putrajaya cannot deny involvement in the rally as the booklet was produced and funded by the Department of Special Affairs (Jasa) that is under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

“They have unashamedly used public funds to support a rally with the sole intention of spreading racial hatred and violence,” Chin said in a statement issued in response to a minister’s denial that the government was behind the booklet.

Earlier today, Federal Territories Minister and Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor dismissed claims that the government was behind the booklet or supported the rally.

The Umno secretary-general added it was up to Jasa to justify the production of the booklet.

However, Chin said Tengku Adnan’s denial made no sense.

“The thing is that while Putrajaya denies any responsibility for the ‘Red Shirts’ but a ministry’s agency produced the book and using public funds. How can this be separated?” she told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

Jasa director-general Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who is also an Umno supreme council member, yesterday justified the booklet by describing the “Red Shirts” rally as “historic” and exemplary.

Chin said Jasa’s action could undermine stability as it promoted racial hatred and insisted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must not ignore the booklet and its message.

“Najib and his Cabinet cannot deny and relinquish their responsibilities by not taking immediate actions against Jasa and the Ministry of Multimedia and Communications as their action has undermined the stability of this country.

“Jasa and the ministry must also be held accountable as the booklet is an attempt to silence dissent,” she said.

So everyone’s talking about the Umno smartphone; here’s the story of its maker

BY KAMLES KUMAR

It’s called the Umno smartphone because it has been customised to show the Umno logo on its boot screen, lock screen and home screen. It also has a back cover with the party logo imprinted.
But you would have known all that by now. What you may not know is that was made by a Malaysian company, Chili Mobile, touted to be the country’s first customisable phone producer.

…Abdul Rahim said the phone is not exclusive to Umno. His company simply took advantage of their customisable platform to create a special phone for the country’s largest political party at its annual assembly in an enterprising effort to boost its sales.

“It is Umno’s convention, so I do (sic) it for Umno. If tomorrow is PAS’ convention, I will do it for PAS also.

“I’m not a politician. I am a businessman, so I take the opportunity when I can,” he said when met at his booth located on level three of the Putra World Trade Centre, where the Umno assembly is taking place.

Usually, the phones would be priced at RM2,000, Abdul Rahim said, which would make the Umno phones a steal at RM888.

Muhyiddin ‘not a cheat’ booklet handed out to delegates

The 28-page booklet, titled “I’m not a cheat, dare to be truthful” (Aku bukan petualang, berani kerana benar), was given out at a few entrance points from about 8am today.

It recounts why Muhyiddin was sacked as deputy prime minister and his quest to find the truth about the Finance Ministry-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The booklet was printed after Muhyiddin and a few 1MDB critics from within the party have been denied an official platform to speak to members on issues.

The booklet listed Muhyiddin’s services in Umno, with details of his background as a party leader as well as his sacking from the Cabinet in July.

Muhyiddin is still party deputy president. The long-time Umno member was also a former Johor menteri besar.

How can they do this, Ku Nan says of Muhyiddin booklet

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, better known as Ku Nan, is puzzled over the distribution of a booklet defending estranged party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the general assembly today as it is against the rules.

“I don’t know how it is being distributed. I mean, we have a system. How can they simply do this?” Tengku Adnan said.

The booklet is being distributed to Umno members at various entry points to the Putra World Trade Centre, where the assembly is in its last day today.

The booklet said there was a movement supporting him, and that the grassroots did not agree with the party’s move to stop him from officiating division meetings.
