Halloween, a contraction of “All Hallows’ Evening”, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day.

Hong Kong’s chief executive Leung Chun-ying’s eldest daughter was caught on camera slapping her mother twice in the city’s Lan Kwai Fong district.
Leung Chai-yan, 24, who was dressed as a ghoul for Saturday night’s Halloween celebrations, was filmed striking her mother, Regina Tong Ching-yee, twice in the face while she was being bundled into a taxi.
Tong was seen recoiling in shock and cradling her face before attempting to get into the taxi with Leung, who then kicks her.
According to South China Morning Post, Leung had said to the crowd that had gathered at the scene around 3am on Sunday morning: “You know this mum is not my actual biological mother.”
She then left the scene by taxi with a male friend. It is not clear what caused the public outburst but it is understood that Leung was partying in Central and was causing a commotion before her mother appeared. Footage from Apple Daily showed Leung, who seemed to drunk, arguing with a taxi driver after accusing him of rejecting to pick her up.
According to the video, Leung is seen yelling at the driver and also at bystanders. “You’re rejecting (picking up passengers)? Why are you rejecting?,” shouted Leung to the cabby, who denied the accusation.
“There are so many reporters filming, why would I reject?”, argued the cabby. The cabby then asked Leung where she was heading to, to which Leung replied: “Wherever I’m going has nothing to do with you!” According to Apple Daily, this incident happened about 15 minutes before her mother arrived.
Netizens have flocked to her Instagram account to criticise her for being unfilial.

Gender division: Boys and girls, constrained by toys and Halloween costumes
GENDER DIVISION: Boys and girls, constrained by toys and #Halloween costumes http://bit.ly/1XGsefW

NEW YORK — A web search for Halloween costumes of scientists produces only boys wearing lab coats and goggles. A search for nursing costumes turns up girls in skirts with stethoscopes. Cats and cupcakes are also girls, while sharks and astronauts are boys.
The same gender division exists not just in toys — blue toolboxes and trucks for boys, pink play kitchens and dolls for girls — but also in nearly every other children’s product, including baby blankets, diapers and toothbrushes.
These distinctions have long-term effects on children’s notions of gender roles, social scientists say. Costumes, toys and many other environmental cues can influence the subjects children choose to study, the jobs they pursue and the roles they play at home and in society.
“If you drop the gender marketing, rather than narrowing a set of interests based on gender, it widens the possibility for the child to pursue interests that he or she cares about and has a talent for,” said Dr Carol J Auster, a sociologist at Franklin and Marshall College who studies gender, work and leisure. “Way down the road, it allows a grown man or woman to pursue an occupation that is well matched with their talents or skills.”
…
There are signs that consumers are beginning to push back. Recently, Disney removed gender labels from its costumes, and Target removed them from the toy aisles. Still, both remain sharply divided by colour and type, as do much of children’s worlds.
Indeed, toys are more strictly gendered today than they were 50 years ago, when adult gender roles were much more separate, according to research by Se Elizabeth Sweet, a sociologist at the University of California, Davis.

Japanese Yakuza cancels traditional Halloween handout for kids among fears of new gang war
Japanese Yakuza cancels traditional Halloween handout for kids among fears of new gang war http://on.rt.com/6unc

Japan’s largest organized crime syndicate, Yamaguchi-gumi, has announced that it will not hand out sweets to trick-or-treating children this year, suspending an eccentric tradition that has brought positive publicity to the gang in the past.
“Every year on October 31st, as per custom, we have held a Halloween event, but this year, due to various circumstances, the event has been called off,” said a sign posted at the door of its official Kobe headquarters, where last year several gang members handed out pink plastic goody bags to all comers.
“We realize this is causing great regret to those parents and children who looked forward to this, but next year we absolutely will hold it again, so please look forward to that.”
While the note doesn’t elaborate on the “various circumstances,” most of Japan’s crime observers say a potential turf war with an insubordinate offshoot has made Yamaguchi-gumi wary of courting attention and risk.
“If they gather the neighborhood children and an incident occurs, the boss would be pursued for responsibility,” Atsushi Mizoguchi, a journalist focusing on crime, told the Japan Times.
“There was almost no media attention last year. But it would create havoc this year,” Tomohiko Suzuki, another writer specializing on the Yakuza, said to the newspaper.

Halloween Costume Correctness on Campus: Feel Free to Be You, but Not Me
Pocahontas, Caitlyn Jenner and Pancho Villa are no-nos. Also off-limits are geisha girls. http://nyti.ms/1XFgVom

SEATTLE — Pocahontas, Caitlyn Jenner and Pancho Villa are no-nos. Also off-limits are geisha girls and samurai warriors — even, some say, if the wearer is Japanese. Among acceptable options, innocuous ones lead the pack: a Crayola crayon, a cup of Starbucks coffee or the striped-cap-wearing protagonist of the “Where’s Waldo?” books.
As colleges debate the lines between cultural sensitivity and free speech, they are issuing recommendations for Halloween costumes on campus, aimed at fending off even a hint of offense in students’ choice of attire. Using the fairly new yardstick of cultural appropriation — which means pretending for fun or profit to be a member of an ethnic, racial or gender group to which you do not belong — schools, student groups and fraternity associations are sending a message that can be summed up in five words: It is dangerous to pretend.
“If there’s a gray line, it’s always best to stay away from it,” said Mitchell Chen, 21, a microbiology major and director of diversity efforts at the Associated Students of the University of Washington. The university emailed to all students this week a six-minute video of what not to do for Halloween.
