WASHINGTON (AFP) – The FBI and the US Justice Department said Tuesday (Oct 27) they had opened a civil rights investigation into the violent arrest of a black female high school student by a white police officer, footage of which has gone viral and sparked outrage.
The incident in South Carolina comes amid a heightened focus on police brutality in the United States after a string of incidents – some deadly – involving law enforcement officials and African Americans.
Politicians, school officials and rights groups expressed outrage Tuesday, saying such violence has no place in schools.

Richland County, SC (WLTX) – A Richland County school resource officer has been placed on administrative leave following an incident at a local high school that was captured on video and circulated on social media sites across the nation.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said late Monday night that Deputy Ben Fields will not be back at any school, and is not currently working for the department, pending the results of an investigation.

Late Monday night, News19 obtained a second video of the incident. It’s a longer clip than the initial one, and some extra conversation can be heard.
“I’ve never seen anything so nasty looking, so sick to the point that you know, other students are turning away, don’t know what to do, and are just scared for their lives,” said Tony Robinson Jr., who made the recording “That’s supposed to be somebody that’s going to protect us. Not somebody that we need to be scare off, or afraid.”

Lott had earlier told News19 that the student refused to leave after a teacher asked her to. An administrator was called to the room, and also asked the student to leave, Lott said, and she refused again. Finally, the school resource officer came to the room. Lott said the officer forcibly removed the student.
The girl was charged with disturbing schools, and was released to the custody of her parents. Another female student in the class was also charged with disturbing schools. (Wilson had earlier said the second student was male, but later clarified.)
Niya Kenny, 18, identified herself as the other student who was charged. She said she was standing up for her classmate.
“I had never seen nothing like that in my life, a man use that much force on a little girl. A big man, like 300 pounds of full muscle. I was like ‘no way, no way.’ You can’t do nothing like that to a little girl. I’m talking about she’s like 5’6″.”

SOUTH CAROLINA – Authorities are investigating a police officer filmed on camera violently flinging a black female student across the classroom on Monday (Oct 26).
The officer, identified by CNN as Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Fields, was called in to Columbia’s Spring Valley High School to arrest the girl after she had been asked to leave the classroom but refused.
Fields was assigned as one of the school’s resource officers, while the circumstances leading up to the incident are not clear.
