You can give your medal away and still have it!

On Sunday, on the sidelines of the World Player of the Year award in London, World Rugby praised Williams’ gesture and confirmed he will be presented with a second medal.

LONDON – All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams will be given a new World Cup winners’ medal to replace the one he handed to a young fan after Saturday’s final victory over Australia.

Williams said the boy, later identified as Charlie Lines, was thrown to the ground by a security official after running on to the Twickenham pitch following the 34-17 triumph.

“I was walking around doing a lap of honour with the boys and a young fella came running out and he got smoked by the security guard, like full on tackled him. I felt sorry for the little fella,” said Williams after the incident.

“He would have been eight or seven, I kind of felt sorry for him.

“Hopefully (the medal) made it a night to remember for him. It’s better that he has it rather than having it hang up at home.”

Rugby: All Blacks win sees Qantas crew wear Kiwi jerseys

Today played good sports and followed through with wearing jerseys on board.

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australian airline Qantas escaped having to paint a plane black, but the crew on a trans-Tasman flight donned New Zealand jerseys on Monday after losing a bet on the outcome of the rugby World Cup.

New Zealand triumphed over Australia 34-17 at Twickenham on Saturday, but not before Air New Zealand and Qantas had engaged in enough friendly banter on Twitter to set up the #AirlineWager.

After the Kiwi carrier originally suggested Qantas paint a plane black if the Wallabies lost, the ‘Flying Kangaroo’ responded with a picture of an Air NZ airliner in the Australian colours saying: “While black is slimming, we think it needs a golden touch.”

They eventually settled on flight crews of the losing airline wearing rival jerseys the day after the final.

“Today @Qantas played good sports and followed through with #AirlineWager wearing @AllBlacks jerseys on board,” a jubilant Air NZ tweeted on Monday.

BBC Sport – Rugby World

Rugby World Cup final win defines New Zealand as sporting giants

The best World Cup final, after the finest tournament, won by the greatest team.

There are plenty of successful sporting sides. More than a few have established dynasties. Only the rarest both triumph repeatedly and do so with the sort of style and swagger that lights up future generations as well as their own.

This All Blacks team, like the Brazil side that won football’s World Cup in 1970, are now at that sanctified level: drawn from a rich heritage unlike any other, taking their sport to heights that none before have touched.

It is not simply that with Saturday night’s 34-17 win over Australia they have become the first team in history to retain the Webb Ellis trophy.

In winning their World Cup for a third time, just as Brazil did with Pele, Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho and the rest almost half a century before, they have both a cluster of superstars who will still be cherished another 50 years on and a blend that no-one who has seen will ever forget.

Twickenham witnessed both. The opening try from Nehe Milner-Skudder was a collective sleight of hand and sorcery that no other team could have conjured up: Conrad Smith’s step into space only he had seen, Aaron Smith on his inside by instinct, captain Richie McCaw with black-shirted magic to find his young winger outside.

The second, garlanding the start of the second half just as the opener had illuminated the end of the first, exemplified the same unholy skills in a contrasting style: Sonny Bill Williams sucking in three defenders with brute power before off-loading with delicate dexterity, Ma’a Nonu curving away on a wrecking-ball’s path through the splintering defensive wall.

That was the most incredible piece of defending from any team I’ve ever seen. So disciplined from the All Blacks, then – boom boom – try.

That is the ball game.

Australia chance their arm as Kurtely Beale scissors with Drew Mitchell but the ball fails to make the transition. It goes to ground, Ben Smith swoops, weaves clear and boots upfield.

A footrace and Beauden Barrett is the winner by a clear head.

Extras from Carter.

New Zealand got into the mode of keeping it among the forwards when Ben Smith was off and they’ve not been able to get out of that. They do seem pretty tired.

The All Blacks‘ secret? Pork pies

Embedded image permalink

The All Blacks appear to be enjoying the best of British food, with a team spokesman telling the press the team was partial to pork pies in particular.

The team had played in London, Newcastle and Cardiff, and had been enjoying the odd British treat along the way.

“The English tucker has been first class,” media minder Joe Locke told The Mirror.

“We have been travelling around the country for our matches and had to take a charter flight up to the north east for our match against Tonga in Newcastle, before returning to Wales for the match against France.

“We have had traditional pork pies, it has been classic English food, sometimes with a contemporary twist, and it has been brilliant.”

A traditional pork pie is served cold, and is made of pork and pork jelly, encased in pastry.

Are pork pies fuelling the to World Cup glory?

Much had been written that New Zealand would be tripped by France again. However, the All Blacks thrashed France 62-13. One commentator likened it to an annihilation.

Rugby World Cup: New Zealand beat France 62-13 to reach semis

New Zealand (29) 62
Tries: Retallick, Milner-Skudder, Savea 3, Kaino, Read, Kerr-Barlow 2 Cons: Carter 7 Pens: Carter
France (13) 13
Try: Picamoles Con: Parra Pens: Spedding, Parra

Defending champions New Zealand hit top gear to demolish France and set up a semi-final against South Africa.

The All Blacks were almost out of sight at half-time, Julian Savea scoring two tries and Brodie Retallick and Nehe Milner-Skudder one apiece.

A try by Louis Picamoles had kept France afloat but when he was sent to the sin-bin French hopes evaporated.

Savea completed a fine hat-trick and Jerome Kaino, Kieran Read and Tawera Kerr-Barlow (two) also crossed.

France had hoped to draw inspiration from their World Cup upsets over the All Blacks in 1999 and 2007, when they beat them in the quarter-finals in Cardiff, as well as their near-miss in the 2011 final, when they narrowly lost 8-7.

But New Zealand, who have now beaten France nine times in a row and equalled Australia’s record of 12 consecutive World Cup wins, never looked like losing against a Philippe Saint-Andre side forced to deny they are in outright rebellion.

And while the French simply did not have the requisite talent or a game-plan to trouble New Zealand, the performance of Steve Hansen’s side was undoubtedly the most impressive of the tournament so far.
