BOLD WORDS BY SPAD
12 October 2013
More than 7,500 “elegant brown” Proton Exora taxis will be hitting Malaysian streets by 2015, replacing all other models as the nation’s new taxis.

No, that has not happened. Instead, SPAD has failed miserably in persuading taxi drivers to change over to a Proton Exora or to get the man on the street to take a TEKS1M cab.
WHY WOULD YOU TAKE A TEKS1M CAB AND PAY MORE?
GREATER KL RATES
TEKS1M: Flagdown rate RM4; 30 sen per 200m; 30 sen per 36 secs;
Taxi: Flagdown rate RM3; 25 sen per 200m; 25 sen per 36 secs;
Ride a TEKS1M for 10km and pay RM17.50.
Ride a normal cab and pay RM14.25.

Cheaper TEKS1M by year-end, says SPAD
Last updated on 12 October 2015 – 10:28pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Teksi 1Malaysia (TEKS1M) fare rates will be reduced by year-end to encourage more people to use the service.
Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said today the commission is finalising a study to make the gold-brown taxis more popular.
It is also considering a new sedan-type car for TEKS1M other than the MPV-type vehicles,” he said.
“We will standardise the fare rates between TEKS1M and budget taxis. Hopefully, we can announce it in a month or two,” he told theSun.
Syed Hamid said when TEKS1M was introduced two years ago, SPAD had envisioned that it would lift the image of the taxi industry by providing better ride comfort and better quality drivers.
However, many cabbies were not keen to migrate to TEKS1M due to the vehicles’ higher cost while the public preferred to use the cheaper budget taxis.

SPAD: All new taxis to be brown Proton Exora starting Nov 1
Some of the first Proton Taxi Exora taxis waiting to hit the streets.
KUALA LUMPUR: All budget and executive taxi operators with permits expiring by Oct 31 this year must change their car types to a brown Proton Exora.
The move, which comes under a taxi migration scheme by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will see 2,604 drivers in Malaysia using the brown Exora by the end of the year.
SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said those with permits expiring between May 1 and Oct 31 would be allowed to keep on using whatever car they had until November.
“As of May 1, those who have to change are given six months to migrate to the new taxi… we’ll give an extension. We hope they will (change their taxis),” he told reporters at SPAD headquarters Wednesday.
He added that drivers whose permits expired between May 1 and Oct 31 this year were welcome to switch to the Exora.
The move is expected to affect 42,642 budget and executive taxi drivers across Peninsular Malaysia.
Given that taxi permits have a 10-year lifespan, the last non-Proton Exora taxi is expected to disappear from Malaysia’s streets by the end of 2024.

SPAD was still mulling over whether or not to replace all other taxis in the country with the brown Exora, though it would certainly be the case for city taxis.

7,500 Exora taxis to hit the streets
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 7,500 “elegant brown” Proton Exora taxis will be hitting Malaysian streets by 2015, replacing all other models as the nation’s new taxis.
“We are keeping the same number (of taxis) or may even shrink the number. But out of the total, it will be 7,500 Proton Exoras,” Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal said.
He said that 200 Exora taxis were expected to be on roads here by the end of the month.
“By the first quarter of next year, a total of 1,000 of them will be in Penang, Johor Baru and here,” he said after launching the first 50 Exoras under the Teksi 1Malaysia scheme at Bandar Tasik Selatan Integrated Transport Terminal yesterday.

The new taxi will have debit and credit card facilities and will gradually replace future budget, premier and executive-class taxis.
Fares for the new Exora will start at RM3, except for Penang island, which will start at RM4.

Under TEKS1M, taxi owners need not pay a downpayment for their new vehicles, and the loan interest is fixed at 2% for seven years. The downpayment is paid for via a grant from Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia and rebates from Proton.
