Najib: BTN needed to ensure victories in future general elections
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the National Civics Bureau (BTN) was formed with specific objectives to mould Malaysians that can ensure the government’s continuity.
As such, he said BTN remains relevant and must continue to play its role in the next general election and more to come.
“BTN was formed with a certain role and specific objectives to contribute in moulding the spirit amongst Malaysians that guarantees a government that can ensure continuity in leadership and holds on to power in the name of race, religion and country.
“Based on this spirit, BTN must be maintained. BTN remains relevant and continues to play a role to this day and should continue doing so in the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th general elections for us to ensure victory,” he said in a speech at the BTN Academy in Kuala Lumpur today.

Utusan: BTN promotes racial unity

BTN promotes racial unity so why fear it, Utusan asks Kit Siang
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21— Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia has defended the controversial National Civics Bureau (BTN), saying that it should not be scrapped but strengthened and even given more funds to continue its patriotic programmes.
Questioning DAP’s Lim Kit Siang’s demand for the BTN to be binned, the editors writing under the Awang Selamat pseudonym claimed that the Gelang Patah MP’s accusations about the agency were untrue.
.
“Once again, the BTN has become the target of the DAP– this time, the party advisor Lim Kit Siang wants BTN to be scrapped because he claims it is a waste of money and that it inculcates racial sentiments.
“This is an old tactic of the DAP to give a bad impression about BTN to society. Why fear the bureau when its role is to foster racial unity and adherence to the federal constitution?” Awang Selamat wrote in Mingguan Malaysia, Utusan Malaysia’s weekend edition.
…
“Seeing as Kit Siang is speaking about BTN, Awang suggests that the bureau be given more funds and strengthened further and its role be expanded to give birth to Malaysians who love their country,” Awang added.

BTN’s own slides proof of racism, says Kasturi
KUALA LUMPUR: A deputy minister has been taken to task for displaying ignorance of the “disgusting methods of brainwashing’ used by the controversial federal government’s Biro Tata Negara.
The MP for Batu Kawan, Kasturi Patto, said six slides, and one entitled “Racism” displayed on the BTN website last week were concrete proof of the racist intent of the bureau’s work.
…
Kasturi, in her statement today, said the six BTN slides gave a detailed breakdown and analysis of seats held by the Barisan Nasional and opposition parties from 1959 to 2013.
They gave breakdowns of Malay, Chinese and Indian support in BN seats and Pakatan Rakyat seats, an analysis of the popular vote and the difference in votes for BN and PR.
She said phrases such as “akhbar Cina jarum halus menikam kerajaan melalui liputan berita yang mempromosi gerakan pembangkang” which said the Chinese-language press were daggers to stab the government with news articles to promote the opposition movement.
The election results were examined in great detail, by size of majority and ethnicity, and a detailed breakdown of MPs in the Dewan Rakyat divided into Muslim and non-Muslim MPs as well as by race or ethnicity.
It examined the Malay and Chinese support base and listed what Umno-BN needed to do to cement power.
…
There was “a strongly worded message on turmoil and uncertainty if there is a change of government, citing the Killing Fields’ Pol Pot regime as comparison,” said Kasturi.
She said the slides contained “absolutely nothing patriotic or remotely relevant to civil servants” but were “cheap dirty manoeuvres” by Umno-BN to cement their position and power in their preparation for the next general election.
She said the slides also attacked young Malay leaders in the DAP and the G25 group of eminent Malays.

Malay indie group strikes back at BTN, demands public apology
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Accused of leading an anti-establishment movement against the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, a group of Malay independent book publishers and writers are now threatening to take action against the National Civics Bureau (BTN) if it refuses to apologise.
In a statement here, the group gave the government agency a 14-day deadline to issue the public apology and retract the accusations made in a teaching module uploaded on its website earlier this year.
“We deny the accusations made by the BTN in the slides that appeared on its website www.btn.gov.my on March 11 and were subsequently removed on June 15,” they said. “We believe that BTN, under the Research and Publications division, has made reckless claims without any verification and we demand that BTN issues a public apology. “Should BTN fail to retract this teaching module and admit the mistakes it made in the slides on their website, we will not hesitate to take further action. We give the agency 14 days to respond,” they added.
The statement, sent to the media via email by Faisal Mustaffa of Merpati Jingga, an independent book publisher, was also backed by writers Benz Ali and Melati Rahim, and several others, including Du Book Press, Thukul Chetak, Group Buku Jalanan and Frinjan. …
In their statement today, the group of writers and publishers told BTN that the term “indie” refers to being “independent” and not bound by the rules of other established institutions or organisations. “But the definition of ‘indie’ according to BTN deviates from the actual meaning of the term and gives the impression that we bring bad influence to the country,” they said.
Despite denials by the government and the agency, sporadic leaks of closed-door events conducted by the BTN or featuring its staff have continued to entrench suspicions that the bureau was a hotbed of racism and “brainwashing”.

Dyana called for the dissolution of BTN to avoid further damage to society.
.@dyanasmd: ‘Why must taxpayers fund BTN’s racism?’ http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/302301

DAP Youth exco member Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud today questioned the National Civics Bureau (BTN) for sowing racism and division at the expense of taxpayers. “Do Malaysians as taxpayers accept the tens of millions in funding for BTN’s budget for this purpose (of sowing racism)?” she said in a statement today.
…
Dyana noted that these courses are often compulsory for varsity students and government servants and are geared towards building support for BN. “But it is clear BTN is destroying the nation and sowing anger and hate among Malaysians. “Unfortunately, most of its participants are there by force as it is either a compulsory course or a prerequisite for government promotions,” she added.

BTN boss doesn’t quite say ‘sorry’ and instead, supports what they are doing.
What did we expect, an apology and an admission of guilt?
No way, Hosea!
What he basically meant was ‘We were only talking bad about you within BTN. You people were not supposed to know’.

No hard feelings, BTN boss tells ‘indie’ scene after attack slides leaked
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 ― The National Civics Bureau (BTN) claimed today that leaked presentation slides critical of groups including those in the Malay subculture were meant only for internal “academic discussions”, news portal Astro Awani reported.
In an apparent bid to repair ties with Malay independent (indie) book publishers after tarring them as masterminds of an “anti-establishment” movement, BTN director Datuk Raja Arif Raja Ali said the publishers should not be “slighted” by the slides. “I don’t know how the material can get circulated and leaked to the public. It was just a discussion module and does not give a negative connotation of indie like it was defined by some parties,” Raja Arif told Awani.
“I want them to not be slighted with the issue. All must be clear about it, it was only a subject of internal academic discussion and I am baffled because it was spread publicly.”
