Farah Ann surprised, honored to receive Selangor award
KLANG: She has excelled as a gymnast, but Farah Ann Abdul Hadi said she never expected to be recognized with an award from Selangor.
She has been representing the state in competitive gymnastics since she was six years old.
Farah Ann was one of the five recipients of the Ahli Kegemilangan Sukan Selangor (A.K.S) from Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah in conjunction with his 71st birthday on Sunday.
“I am honoured to be even considered for the award and it is a big surprise for me, I am very grateful for the recognition,” said Farah.
When asked about the incident where Sultan Sharafuddin had come to her defence after certain quarters criticised her sporting attire during the 2015 Sea Games in Singapore, the gymnast said she was thankful for the Ruler’s intervention.
Farah Ann won two gold medals, a silver medal and three bronze medals at the event.
Sultan Sharafuddin also wrote Farah Ann a letter congratulating her on her achievements and said he hoped she would not take the comments by “narrow-minded people” to heart.
The Ruler also advised her to continue to strive to be the best in her field.
Sultan Sharafuddin, who said Farah Ann had made Malaysia and Selangor proud of her achievements, also chided those who had made a fuss over her competitive sports attire.

It’s women’s choice whether to wear leotards, KJ says
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that although he is not encouraging all women to wear leotards, it is ultimately their choice to wear them when appropriate.
He was referring to the incident last year where national gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, who bagged a gold medal in the SEA Games, was instead criticised for wearing a leotard during the competition.
“I’m not asking all young women to wear leotards, of course not, but I’m saying, where it’s appropriate.
“There is a choice for our young athletes, a choice for young women to lead their lives how they want to lead,” Khairy said during a question-and-answer session at the 2016 Kuala Lumpur International Youth Discourse held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.
He added that he felt compelled to stand up for Farah Ann because “it is wrong for us to attack” her for her attire choice.
She is an adult who understands religion, he said, so her choice must be respected.
He also said that people must speak up on behalf of women when they are attacked, such as in Farah Ann’s case.
.
He was responding to a question from a student on the empowerment of young women in Malaysia.

Farah Ann receives Selangor Sultan’s backing
PETALING JAYA: Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed his displeasure at those picking on the attire of national artistic gymnast Farah Ann Hadi.
In his congratulatory letter to Farah, Sultan Sharafuddin said that she had made the whole of Malaysia, including Selangor, feel proud.
“Criticising your attire should be the last matter in the minds of those who commented negatively on social media.
“They should be celebrating your achievements for Malaysia and Selangor,” he said in the letter handed to her on Friday.
Farah, accompanied by her father Abdul Hadi Ahmad, received the letter from a Selangor Istana official.
…
Sultan Sharafuddin hoped that Farah would not take the comments of narrow-minded people to heart and continue to strive to be the best in her field.
“Malaysia’s future lies in the younger generation like you and the rakyat supporting them to excel instead of giving negative comments.
“I am sure it must have taken years of hard work, dedication, determination and long hours of training to reach the level that you have achieved,” said the Selangor Ruler.

M’sians offer suggestions for more modest sports attire
Sports attire too revealing? Cynical Malaysians are offering suggestions on how our sports contingent can cover up for the next SEA Games.
PETALING JAYA: The public outcry among many Muslims over the revealing costume gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi wore at the SEA Games, has triggered a wave of cynical and at times plain hilarious suggestions from members of the public as to how the Malaysian contingent should be attired in the future.
One incensed Malaysian suggested our gymnasts simply go encased in a cardboard box with ventilation holes for breathing and two holes at the sides for their arms to stick out of so they can still perform their floor and parallel bar routines with ease.
Another suggested our sportspeople wear the burqa, a large flowing garment that envelops the entire body from head to toe. Showing off how versatile the garment could be, a group garbed in the burqa are photoshopped carrying basketballs, holding weights, badminton rackets, water polo balls and footballs under the banner “Sea Games 2017 Malaysian Sports Contingent”.

My apologies, Farah Ann — Shahirah Elaiza
JUNE 16 — Dear Farah Ann, first and foremost, let me congratulate you on winning a gold medal at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games. I admire you for having the determination, discipline and dedication to become a world-class gymnast. As a fellow Malaysian, I am proud of you because I know not anyone can do what you have just achieved.
Secondly, I would like to apologise on behalf of your nay-sayers and harsh critics…
…
A true gentleman or lady, Muslim or not, would never, ever disrespect or humiliate a woman — be her attire a bikini or a burqa.

Regulating sportswear? Have guidelines for ‘perverts’ instead, sports minister says
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The authorities should come out with guidelines for “perverts” instead of trying to regulate sportswear, Khairy Jamaluddin hit back today amid furore against SEA Games gold medallist Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s gymnastic attire.
“Should also have guidelines for ‘gatal’ men to lower their gaze when they can’t contain themselves watching sports,” the youth and sports minister said on his official Twitter account @Khairykj, using the Malay slang for “perverted”.

‘Minister bowing to zealots over gymnast’s attire’ http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/301988 | https://twibble.io

PKR legal bureau chief Latheefa Koya today slammed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom for bowing to pressure from religious zealots.
This was after Jamil Khir, who is in charge of Islamic affairs, told Parliament yesterday the government may review sports attires after the national gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s attire at the SEA games sparked outrage among conservatives.
…
“The suggestion taken up by the ministry to review the clothings of athletes, stemming from perverse remarks by some zealots – is dangerous and narrow.
“Instead of defending a woman athlete who brought fame and glory to this country – a government minister yesterday supported in Parliament the call of those who criticised her attire,” Latheefa said in a statement today.
…
Latheefa said if the government was so interested about issues of aurat (modesty), it should look at the wives of ministers first.
“Why is there no such suggestion on cover up of aurat for minister’s spouses? Why pick on our dynamic young athletes?

After gymnast furore, Islamist group moots Jakim guidelines for sports
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The federal Islamic authorities should come out with a guideline for sports so Muslim women can stay Shariah-compliant, the female wing of National Muslim Youth Association (Pembina) said today.
Amid attacks against SEA Games gold medallist Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s gymnastic attire, the student arm of Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) said Muslim women should stay away for activities or careers which are not Shariah-compliant.
“If Jakim had recently been able to provide a guideline for concerts in Malaysia, I am optimistic Jakim will be able to provide a guideline for sports next,” Pembina female wing chief Roszida Kamaruddin said on its website, using the acronym of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department.
…
“Women should not be stopped from sports, but they must priorities the Islamic codes in sports attire. Furthermore, there are many Muslim female athletes who succeed even by covering their aurat,” said Roszida, referring to the “intimate body parts” that Muslims must cover with clothing.

People with nothing positive to say or only gawk at the female figure should keep their thoughts to themselves, said MCA vice president Chew Mei Fun after national gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi drew brickbats over her outfit.
She said people who find fault in women over their sporting attire would only confine women in the domestic realm, especially Muslim women, because the outfits deemed to be ‘revealing’ are also used in sports other than gymnastics.
This would make sports in Malaysia dominated males and non-Muslims, which is does not bode well for the country’s sports development and national unity, she said.
…
The deputy women’s minister also expressed concern over the statement by Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria, who had reportedly said that gymnastics is not a sport for Muslim women, while Muslim men should wear knee-length shorts while playing football.
Chew said such statements would stagnate sports participation in both men and women.

‘Farah Ann wore the right attire and did the nation proud’
SINGAPORE: Gold medallist gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi does not deserve flak for wearing standard approved leotards in her winning routine, said the country’s contingent head.
Malaysia SEA Games chef de mission Datuk Norza Zakaria is the latest Malaysian to defend the athlete.
Norza said Farah Ann had won multiple medals, including two golds, for the team.
“For me, Abdul Hadi’s daughters Farah Ann and Katrina have done so much for the country. Both of them won a total of six medals for the contingent and they don’t deserve that kind of treatment.
“I think everyone should give them the credit they deserve, rather than saying things that do not help,” he said yesterday.

Tudung vs miniskirts: Topic of how Muslim women dress in M’sia is now a subject of much debate http://tdy.sg/1BaEu1r
A road billboard in Kelantan shows a Muslim woman in a tudung and baju kurung with the words: “Menjaga aurat adalah perintah Allah SWT” [Covering your ‘aurat’ is God’s commandment]. Photo: Malay Mail OnlineKUALA LUMPUR — A billboard in Kelantan shows a Muslim woman in a tudung and baju kurung with the words: “Menjaga aurat adalah perintah Allah SWT” [Covering your ‘aurat’ is God’s commandment].
The image of the signboard, which was shared by the Ipoh branch of Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) on its Facebook page, illustrates how women’s bodies in Malaysia have become a battleground between the conservatives and the liberals, just like the opposing campaigns in the Arab world on the headscarf and the miniskirt.
…
The latest controversy was sparked by social media criticism over the gymnastic leotard of SEA Games gold medallist Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, which allegedly showed off the 21-year-old Muslim athlete’s “aurat” and the “shape of her vagina”. Conservative Muslim figures say women should cover themselves from head to toe, while liberal Muslims say hemlines don’t determine piety.
…
According to the beliefs of local politician Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, a Malay leader in secular party DAP, Muslim women should be allowed to wear whatever they want, from knee-length skirts to even miniskirts.
…
Mr Abdul Hakim Othman, spokesman of ultra-conservative Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir Malaysia (HTM) disagreed with the view, however, and said it is “haram” (forbidden) for Muslim women to wear miniskirts or anything similar in public.
…
Like Mr Abdul Hakim, Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria similarly said Muslim women must cover their entire bodies except for their face and hands.
…
Sisters in Islam communications officer Aliah Ali said women’s right to decide what to wear should be respected.
…
In Malaysia, however, what Muslim women wear has come to symbolise their religiosity – or the lack of it – according to conservatives who seek to impose their beliefs and dictate other people’s appearances.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Malaysian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi has received a slew of criticisms from Muslims who attacked her for showing her “aurat” and the “shape of her vagina” in a leotard despite winning a gold medal at the SEA Games. Several Facebook users slammed the 21-year-old Malay woman on Buletin TV3’s Facebook page that had uploaded Wednesday a photograph of her in the gymnastics outfit, along with a caption that announced her winning gold in floor exercise in artistic gymnastics. “Until she’s dead too people can see the shape of her vagina and aurat,” wrote a Facebook user called Muhammad Nur Salam. Facebook user called Amir Muhd said: “Just strip off your clothes lah… let everyone see.” Another Facebook user said Farah Ann’s dressing was even worse than non-Muslims’ in terms of showing her “aurat”.
