Nurul Izzah: Countdown for Anwar’s release starts now

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leaders and supporters gathered outside Parliament at 8pm tonight before marching to Dataran Merdeka in solidarity with Anwar Ibrahim who had spent 1,000 days in prison.
Anwar’s wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was joined by her daughter and PKR’s vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
Other Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders present included DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, PKR vice-president Tian Chua, Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah, PAS’ Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke, PPBM’s Kharuddin Abu Hassan, and Amanah communications director Khalid Samad.
Together with a small group of 150 people, they took pictures outside Parliament grounds and proceeded to march to Dataran Merdeka.

At Dataran Merdeka, PH leaders took turns to speak about Anwar.
Wan Azizah said Anwar had called her yesterday as he was allowed one phone call a week.
“He told me he was in pain and it was hard for him to do anything.
“He said it was even difficult to write or brush his teeth because of the pain. This is his sacrifice for us to have a better future,” she said.
Nurul Izzah said although Anwar was jailed, he always reminded the family to defend the people and to raise issues about the country’s economy.
“Despite threats of imprisonment, he never ran away from Malaysia.
“Those who jailed him have to be ashamed for being cowards because they are scared of the truth.
“The winds of change are coming; we start the countdown to his release now.
“We hope he comes out before his June release date,” she said.
Tian Chua said Anwar’s 1,000 days in prison were significant in his struggle against the corrupt.
“What I went through in prison can’t compare with what he has gone through and we all hope he is released as soon as possible.
“We all sympathise with what he and Wan Azizah has gone through.”
.
Khalid Samad said Anwar was the icon of political struggle against the corrupt.
“He is a principled leader that never sold out to escape imprisonment.
“We will always be with Anwar in his struggle against the corrupt.
“If we don’t win the next GE (general election), we will all be jailed. This is why we have to ensure victory in the upcoming GE,” he said.
…
Anwar’s constant stream messages from prison had previously raised the ire of the Prisons Department.
Journalists have also taken the opportunity to ambush Anwar to ask questions, as he is regularly taken to court to attend several ongoing court proceedings, including defamation cases.
This had led the Prisons Department to place him under strict guard.

Anwar’s Deepavali note from Sungai Buloh prison
PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has released a Deepavali note from Sungai Buloh prison.
In the message released through his party, Anwar likened the message of Deepavali, the triumph of good over evil, to the struggle against the government.
“This carries a deep meaning for all of us; we are governed by a political coalition that has utterly lost all moral authority.
“The people face the consequences of the BN’s failures and indifference; rising living and fuel costs, burdensome taxes such as the goods and services tax, and economic stagnation,” he said in the statement.

DSAI dilantik Pemangku Perdana Menteri.
#BebasAnwar

#TodayInHistory
DSAI appointed Acting Prime Minister in Mahathir Mohamad’s absence.
He made full use of the opportunity to double efforts against corruption. As a result of the amendments, civil servants who have accumulated wealth beyond their means can be investigated up to 10 years even after leaving office. This effort is very much against UMNO’s “Yes Man” & “Dont Challenge Leaders” principles.
DSAI’s persistence & struggles against corruption obviously did not bold well with certain leaders. In the end, he was sacked. #FreeAnwar

Anwar’s family files judicial review for physical contact in prison visits

The family of jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has filed an application for judicial review to allow physical contact between the family and him during prison visits.
They have named Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and two others as the respondents.

Anwar goes to Court on being deprived ‘physical contact’
Anwar wants to quash the order made by the director of Sungai Buloh Prison on March 14 in rejecting him having physical contact with family members.
KUALA LUMPUR: Jailed Opposition Chief Anwar Ibrahim challenged, on Wednesday, the Prisons Department and the government’s decision to deprive him of physical contact with family members.
Anwar, his wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, four daughters and four grandchildren are seeking to quash the order made by the director of Sungai Buloh Prison on March 14 in rejecting him having physical contact with family members.
They also want an order compelling the prison director to allow Anwar physical contact with family members throughout his imprisonment.
Their lawyer, Latheefa Koya, said the judicial review was filed at the High Court registry at 11am, with Anwar and his family naming the director of Sungai Buloh Prison, the commissioner-general of prison and Home Minister as respondents.
“He sent a letter to the Sungai Buloh director on March 2 to ask for human contact during family visits. It was rejected in a letter on March 14,” she said.
In Anwar’s affidavit, he complained that during visits by his family, he was separated from them by a glass panel. “This (glass panel) stops me from having physical contact with my family,” he said. “We can only speak through a phone.”
Anwar described the denial of human contact as cruel. “This caused suffering and pain for me and my family,” he complained. The experience traumatized him, he added.
Anwar disclosed that his grandsons, Sulaimaan Mohamad Khairul and Yahya Mohamad Khairul, refused to come close to the prison phone or wave or greet him through the glass partition.

In prison, Anwar reacquaints with the Bard: Allowed three books at a time, his first preferences are the Quran… http://bit.ly/1F1bjut
COMMENT A reform-questing politician striving against great odds must allow the worst of what he has to face pass through his soul, as if he is grinding sausage. With Anwar Ibrahim, now in his third spell of incarceration in a near 50-year political career, the buffer against the shrivelling effects of the grind is reading. … For an inkling of the entelechy that drives his life, Anwar’s aides reveal that the next book from his home library he has requested is Robert Blake’s acclaimed 1966 biography of Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), the outsider who became prime minister of Britain. Disraeli, a writer who aspired – and successfully made – the transition to the activism of the political arena, is owner of that luminous phrase, “the top of the greasy pole.” That was how he described his arrival at the post of PM of Britain. Anwar’s climb up the “greasy pole” in his own country has stalled, now that he is in the Sungai Buloh Prison. But, it is not certain that this halt is terminal. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/289800?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter —-

Through same glass partition, Anwar’s family sees shades of 1998 during first prison visit
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — Forty-five minutes was all the time that was given to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family today when they visited him for the first time since he began his prison sentence on Tuesday. They were separated by a glass wall, unable to hold, touch or even hug Anwar, who already looked gaunt and thinner, just three days into his five-year term. For his eldest daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar, the short visit reignited painful memories of 1998, when family members were similarly not allowed physical contact with Anwar. “It is too much of a déjà vu. One that we would not want to wish on anyone,” she told Malay Mail Online moments after they left the Sungai Buloh prison. “We are relieved to see him, but I cannot stress how it pains (us) to find ourselves back in the same glass meeting room of 1999 to 2004. Fate sometimes has a cruel twist, but we trust in God’s wisdom and remain proud to be Anwar’s children,” she added. http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/through-same-glass-partition-anwars-family-sees-shades-of-1998-during-first —

Call off @anwaribrahim vigil, cops have better things to do, IGP @KBAB51 tells #PKR http://bit.ly/1vEkRft
…
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar urged PKR today to call off its plan to hold nightly vigils outside the Sungai Buloh prison, telling party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail that the police have more important matters to attend to than to keep watch over her husband’s supporters. According to an Astro Awani report, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said he will instruct his officers to negotiate a cancellation with PKR, which has rallied all Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters to kick off the first of the vigils at 8.30pm tonight. “When they gather, the police have to allocate resources for monitoring. If the gathering goes on, we will have to use a lot of resources to ensure things stay peaceful. “The police have much more important things to do than take care of Wan Azizah and her people outside the jail. I hope she will think rationally in this matter,” the IGP was quoted saying. Khalid also pointed out that Dr Wan Azizah had not applied for a permit to hold the gathering. “An assembly must be held in a suitable place. In this case, the gathering will not only obstruct traffic but the work of the Prisons Department’s staff as well. “For a permit to be approved, the venue must give their permission, based on the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” he reportedly told Astro Awani. http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/call-off-anwar-vigil-cops-have-better-things-to-do-igp-tells-pkr — Malaysiakini 12:50PM Feb 11, 2015
Anwar will be ‘out’ on Tuesday
Despite being slapped with a five-year’ jail sentence for sodomy, PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim is expected to make a public appearance at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Tuesday, exactly a week after yesterday’s controversial verdict. This was confirmed by his lawyer J Leela to Malaysiakini today. Anwar will be brought back to testify in his RM100 million defamation suit against Foreign Minister Anifah Aman. Besides Leela, Anwar’s other counsel for the case will be Razlan Hadri Zulkifli. Anwar has been asked to give his testimony again following a claim by Anifah in his defence that he (Anifah) was offered RM100 million to persuade several BN federal lawmakers from Sabah to crossover to the opposition Pakatan Rakyat in the much-hyped Sept 16, 2008 saga. The jailed opposition leader will be questioned specifically on this allegation alone before the case is closed for submissions as decided during court proceedings last month. Ironically, the person representing Anifah is Anwar’s nemesis who appeared at the Court of Appeal and Federal Court, senior lawyer Muhammd Shafee Abdullah who represented the Attorney-General in the Sodomy II trial. … The PKR de facto leader filed the defamation suit against Anifah on May 27, 2009, following Anifah’s press conference in Washington with then US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. He alleged Anwar attempted to buy over several MPs and had offered him the deputy prime minister’s post. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/288938 —

PKR is eschewing its trademark mega rallies and will instead hold nightly solidarity vigils outside Sungai Buloh prison where PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim is detained for sodomy. … “(We will be there for) as long as people want to do it,” Anwar’s wife and party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said. “We encourage the public to take part in the solidarity vigil outside the prison starting tomorrow,” she told a press conference at the PKR headquarters. In a deja vu of Anwar’s first sodomy conviction in 2009, the couple’s daughter Nurul Nuha will announce details of a ‘March to Freedom’ tomorrow. Their eldest Nurul Izzah, now Lembah Pantai MP, campaigned hard for her father’s freedom despite being only a teenager when Anwar first went to jail. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/288904 — Retweeted 397 times

‘Hope’ cannot be jailed in Jalan Harapan
COMMENT His critics call him a false messiah and a charlatan but his supporters herald him as the hope of this nation. So it is ironic that the road which leads to the Sungai Buloh prison is called Jalan Harapan. Once again, the fortified prison gates opened this evening to ‘welcome’ its most famous inmate, one that has rattled the powers-that-be for a decade-and-a-half. In the past, Anwar Ibrahim spent five years languishing behind its walls from which he continued to pose a threat to the ruling elite. It was here that the idea for PKR was conceived. So while concrete and steel could contain his physical existence, they however failed to incarcerate his spirit and mind. Imprisoning him would not halt the momentum which he triggered following his sacking in 1998. He dismissal from the government made the biggest crack in the fortress called BN, and he demolished the myth that the ruling coalition was indestructible. As his lead counsel Gopal Sri Ram argued, this man made immense contributions to the democratisation of this nation. … For his diehard supporters, the candle of hope lit by Anwar cannot be extinguished even if he is put behind bars. On the contrary, his current sentence could prove to be catastrophic for BN given the widespread perception that the judges were executing the bidding of their political masters. .. Anwar is synonymous with the word tenacious, a fact that even his opponents admit to, albeit while gritting their teeth. Many an opportunity had arose for him to flee this predicament and seek asylum abroad. But he chose to remain on Malaysian soil. Such is the nature of the man, who since his days as a student leader, has been a fighter right down to the bone. … And so for those who believe that the sun has set on the opposition leader, they might still be in for a surprise. In or out of a cage, a tiger is still a tiger. To quote Anwar’s scathing speech from the dock this afternoon: “I have fought most of my life […] My struggle will continue, wherever I am sent and whatever is done to me.” http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/288899 —

U.S. Embassy Statement on the Conviction of Anwar Ibrahim
February 10, 2015
The United States is deeply disappointed and concerned by the rejection of Anwar Ibrahim’s final appeal and his conviction. The United States has followed the trial of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim closely. The decision to prosecute Mr. Anwar, and his trial, have raised serious concerns regarding the rule of law and the independence of the courts. The United States and Malaysia have a strong partnership, and in the context of this relationship, we have regularly raised our serious concerns regarding the Anwar case with Malaysian officials and emphasized that fairness, transparency, and the rule of law are essential to promote confidence in Malaysia’s judicial system and democracy.

Judges walk out as Anwar accuses them of ‘murder’
1.35PM: Following his request, Anwar is allowed to address the court. He says that he will accept the decision and remain patient. “I maintain my innocence and that it is a political conspiracy to stop me,” he adds. Anwar also refers to the PMO statement, which was issued before sentencing. 1.38PM: The judges chose to leave the bench when Anwar raised the issue of political conspiracy, and criticised them for “bowing to their political masters”. “You could have carved your names. But in bowing to the dictates of your political masters, you have become partners in the murder of the judiciary. You chose to remain on the dark side,” he adds, prompting Justice Arifin to tell him to stop. When Anwar refused, the judges left. However, the opposition leader continues speaking in a loud tone, vowing that he will continue to fight for justice and freedom. “I will not surrender.” http://live.malaysiakini.com/mobile/ —

Judgment Day for Anwar Ibrahim
Tuesday, 10th February 2015
8.10AM: Security is water tight. International observers are lining up and lawyers have to show their case files in order to be granted entry into the premises. Other than police in riot gear, mounted police units are also patrolling the vicinity. Meanwhile, some 200 people gathered held a short march, led by PKR Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
8.05AM: Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters have begun streaming into the Sultan Zainal Abidin mosque since 6am. Thirty busses, believed to be used to ferry supporters, were spotted nearby. Security around the Palace of Justice is extremely tight with plenty of police cordons. The entire stretch of road outside the building is closed to traffic and police in riot gear can be seen nearby. The only case that will be heard in Federal Court 1 is Anwar’s appeal. The court is normally used when Chief Justice Arifin is presiding.
