Cops link latest Myanmar murder to human trafficking ring
GEORGE TOWN, Jan 14 — A Myanmar man who was found beaten to death in Kubang Semang, Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) near here yesterday, might have been linked to a human trafficking syndicate.
Penang CID chief, SAC Mazlan Kesah said following the discovery of the body of construction worker Abul Kassim Abdul Shukur, 40, the police rescued 17 Myanmar men who were found confined to a house in Kulim, Kedah.
He said initial investigations revealed the 17 were victims of human trafficking and smuggling of illegal immigrants, adding that two Myanmese and a Bangladeshi who watched over the house were detained to facilitate investigations.
The trio were aged between 18 and 24.
“We believe Abul Kassim was murdered as there was unhappiness in the sharing of profits from the human trafficking deal.
“Five local men aged between 26 and 34, have been detained in connection with the Myanmar’s murder.
“Our investigations into the murder led us to the involvement of Myanmese in human trafficking. We are leaving the case (human trafficking) to the Kedah police to handle,” Mazlan told a press conference here today.
Yesterday, the police found Abul Kassim’s body in a bush at an oil palm plantation in Jalan Ara Kuda SPT near here.

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star/Asia News Network) – Myanmar nationals wishing to visit or work in Malaysia will be screened to find out if they have a criminal record, said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid said only those without any criminal record would be permitted to enter the country following a spate of murders involving Myanmar suspects in Penang.
“I have discussed this matter with the Myanmar Labour Minister. The recent murders are a concern for both countries,” he told a press conference after launching a seminar for Bukit Aman department directors and police chiefs on Monday.
…
Ahmad Zahid said the ministry was working with the Myanmar Embassy in Malaysia to monitor Myanmar nationals in the country.
“We are also checking those with UNHCR (United Nations High Commisssioner for Refugees) cards to ensure that they are not involved in any criminal activity,” he said.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar, who attended the event, said 12 Myanmar nationals were still being detained in connection with the murders in Penang.

Myanmar Murders: Self-imposed curfew in Penang for fear of serial killers

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 14 — Myanmar nationals in the southern part of Penang island are observing a self-imposed curfew to ensure their safety in the wake of some 20 murders involving their countrymen by two gangs of serial executioners.
The killings began early this year but the surge in violence in recent months and the disclosure by police this week that more assassins were on the loose have struck terror among the foreigners.
Even though police have mounted a manhunt for the killers and pledged they were in control of the situation, many families have not had relative calm.
Many of those who work in factories and construction sites have stopped going out late in the evening, but if they must, they go in groups.
“We usually go to the nearest supermarket to stock up on our sundries and head straight home,” said Maung Myint, 33, who works in a furniture factory in Bayan Lepas.
Myint, who lives with five friends including two Vietnamese workers in a rented flat in Bayan Baru, said he felt terrified after being told of how their own people killed each other.
He said he and his roommates had stopped going out after work ever since.
“It has become unsafe for us to go around on our bicycles in the evening now,” said Myint, who came to Penang to work three years ago.
Naw Sawbwa, who hails from the Shan community, has also stopped going out after sunset.
“Our employer has cautioned us not to loiter around town in the evening. If at all we need to go out, it has to be in a group,” said the 23-year-old food handler at a coffeeshop in Relau.
…
Penang police revealed that a new group of Myanmar killers had been detected in the state.
The disclosure came soon after the discovery of another foreigner’s body with his throat slit in front of a Buddhist temple in Relau on Monday.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the new gang, whose members had yet to be identified, was believed to be operating from the island.
He said police got the breakthrough after interrogating Myanmar nationals who had been arrested earlier.
Police are now looking for three Myanmar nationals to assist in investigations.
They have been identified as Mohd Yahyar Khan Rafie, 24, whose last known address is Taman Tun Sardon; Lokman, who is in his 20s and the third known only as “Gemuk”.

BUTTERWORTH: A decomposed body of a foreign man wrapped in a sarong was found in the bushes near an estate in Tasek Gelugor here earlier.
In the 5.30pm find, a passer-by spotted a body along Jalan Bukit Tok Alang Jarak, after a putrid odour spread around the vicinity.
A police forensic team on site said initial investigations showed that the man could have died four days ago and was murdered elsewhere.
The team declined to say if there were any wounds on the body.

Police had earlier denied that the murders of Myanmar nationals in Penang over the past 11 months were because of communal clashes.
On Thursday, however, State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said, “We can tell from the way the victims died … it was revenge they brought here from their country. The assailants did not use firearms in their killings. They used machetes to chop their victims into pieces.”

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 19 — A growing number of Myanmar nationals in Penang are living in fear following the murder of 20 of their countrymen believed to be related to communal clashes between Muslims and Buddhists.
Zaw Latt, a Buddhist from the province of Mahoi, said he feared for his safety, especially at night.
The 28-year-old worker at a printing company at the Prai Industrial Estate said: “My friends told me about the recent double-murder in Kampung Jawa, Bukit Mertajam. I am afraid to leave my hostel alone at night.”
