New York (AFP) – US comic Bill Cosby has been charged with sexual assault in Pennsylvania over an incident that took place in 2004, a prosecutor said Wednesday — the first criminal charges filed against the actor after dozens of women claimed abuse.

“Mr Cosby is charged with aggravated indecent assault. This is a felony of the first degree,” Kevin Steele, assistant district attorney for the state’s Montgomery County, told reporters in Norristown, in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Cosby, 78, was to be arraigned on the charge of aggravated indecent assault later Wednesday.

The charges stems from allegations made by a former employee of Temple University in Philadelphia, who says Cosby assaulted her at his home near the East Coast city in 2004.

“On the evening in question, Mr Cosby urged her to take pills that he provided to her and to drink wine — the effect of which rendered her unable to move, (or to) respond to his advances, and he committed aggravated indecent assault upon her,” Steele said.

Steele said the charges stemmed from new evidence in the case that came to light in July, prompting the reopening of the investigation.

Bill Cosby: 35 Women Accuse the Actor of Assault on New York Magazine Cover

Dozens of women have publicly accused Bill Cosby of assault since late last year.

In its new issue, New York magazine photographed 35 of them for a stunning cover story.

“The minute you see something from a bird’s eye view, you start to understand the scope,” explained the magazine’s director of photography, Jody Quon. “Once we organized it and put the women in chronological order based on the year of their alleged assaults, you started to see the only thing they had in common was Bill Cosby, and that’s when we thought, ‘This could be a really powerful photo essay.'”

Through his attorneys, Cosby, 78, has denied the allegations of sexual assault and rape and has never been charged with a crime. Martin Singer, one of Bill Cosby’s attorneys, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News regarding the magazine cover.

Many of the women in the New York magazine portfolio, including model Beverly Johnson, have said over the past few months that they were drugged by the comedian in decades past. Others, including model Janice Dickinson, also alleged rape.

Those interviews were what inspired the magazine to do the story, Quon said. Last winter, New York magazine staffers began cold-calling women named in various outlets to see if they’d be interested in participating. When they received enthusiastic responses, they scheduled six or seven photo shoots around the country, sometimes in large groups and other times one-on-one, depending on the women’s schedules.

“The photographer Amanda Demme told me what was amazing was how the day developed and how the women became more and more at ease with each other. There was crying, there was laughing. They went through all the emotions through the course of the day and when they left there was a great community,” said Quon of the first shoot in Los Angeles. “That’s what I witnessed [at a photo shoot] in New York [too]. … It was really, really, really cathartic for them.”

Demme photographed all of the women in two outfits — one light and one dark. The concept was to keep their ensembles consistent so as not to detract from their faces and body language.

“Then Amanda thought, ‘Let’s photograph each woman on a chair and be very direct,'” Quon added of the cover image.

Ultimately, Quon said that in the days before the magazine went to press, 31 women had been photographed, and four more women agreed to participate in the story at the last minute. Some others declined, however, either because they’d been advised not to participate, legally, or because they just didn’t feel comfortable sharing their stories, Quon said. The empty chair on the cover is representative of those people, as well as women who may come forward in the future.

Cosby, 77, has been accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct, including allegations by many that he drugged and raped them in incidents dating back more than four decades. Cosby has never been criminally charged, and most of the accusations are barred by statutes of limitations.

JUST IN: admits he got drugs to give women for sex

July 7, 2015
PHILADELPHIA — Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he got quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with, and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman and “other people”, according to documents obtained yesterday (July 6) by The Associated Press. That woman and a second woman testified in the same case that they knowingly took quaaludes from him, according to the unsealed documents.
The AP had gone to court to compel the release of the documents from the deposition in a sexual abuse lawsuit filed by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand – the first of a cascade of sexual abuse lawsuits against him. Cosby’s lawyers had objected on the grounds that it would embarrass their client.
Cosby settled that lawsuit under confidential terms in 2006. His lawyers in the Philadelphia case did not immediately return phone calls yesterday. Constand consented to be identified but did not want to comment, her lawyer said yesterday.

Famed model says drugged her in the 1980s. via

(CNN) — In an essay for Vanity Fair, famed model Beverly Johnson accuses Bill Cosby of drugging her in a meeting at his Manhattan residence in the 1980s — adding herself to the list of women who have made accusations against the comedian in recent weeks.

“For a long time I thought it was something that only happened to me, and that I was somehow responsible. So I kept my secret to myself, believing this truth needed to remain in the darkness,” she writes. “Now that other women have come forward with their nightmare stories, I join them.” …

But after hearing other women tell their stories — including Barbara Bowman (who wrote an essay for the Washington Post) and Johnson’s friend Janice Dickinson (who says Cosby sexually assaulted her in 1982, a claim attorney Singer has called “a fabricated lie”) — Johnson says it was time to talk.

Bill Cosby Drugged Me. This Is My Story.

Like most Americans, I spent the 60s, 70s, and part of the 80s in awe of Bill Cosby and his total domination of popular culture. He was the first African American to star in a dramatic television series, I Spy, a show my family in Buffalo, New York, always watched. Cosby cut a striking figure on-screen then. He was funny, smart, and even elegant—all those wonderful things many white Americans didn’t associate with people of color. In fact, as I thought of going public with what follows, a voice in my head kept whispering, “Black men have enough enemies out there already, they certainly don’t need someone like you, an African American with a familiar face and a famous name, fanning the flames.” Imagine my joy in the mid-80s when an agent called to say Bill Cosby wanted me to audition for a role on the The Cosby Show. Cosby played an obstetrician, and he sometimes used models to portray pregnant women sitting in his office waiting room. It was a small part with one or two speaking lines at most, but I wanted in. Tamara Green, who accused Bill Cosby of drugging and groping her, files a defamation lawsuit

Tamara Green, a retired California attorney who says Bill Cosby drugged and groped her in 1969 or 1970, filed a defamation lawsuit against the entertainer Wednesday. In the suit, filed in Springfield, Massachusetts, not far from where Cosby has a home, Green says comments made by Cosby’s representatives to The Washington Post and Newsweek this year “impugned” her reputation and exposed her to “public contempt, ridicule, aversion or disgrace.” She filed the suit to “restore her good name and reputation” her attorney, Joseph Cammarata, tells PEOPLE exclusively. … Green, 66, first came forwardto the Philadelphia Daily News in February 2005, after former Temple employee Andrea Constand, 32, went to authorities saying Cosby had drugged and sexually assaulted her at his Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, mansion. Green, who now lives in southern California, recently told PEOPLE coming forward ten years ago had repercussions for her. http://www.people.com/article/bill-cosby-accuser-tamara-green-files-defamation-suit?xid=socialflow_twitter_peoplemag — Philly.com

Woman accuses Cosby of groping her (2005)

Daily News story that broke Cosby allegations

MONTGOMERY COUNTY authorities are investigating sexual-assault allegations against actor/comedian Bill Cosby, officials confirmed last night. A former Temple University athletic department employee has accused Cosby of groping her at his Elkins Park mansion last January, police said. She reported the alleged assault to Canadian cops last week, police said. The alleged victim could not be reached for comment. She has returned home to Canada, where relatives said she was “not available” last night. Cosby, 67, a Philadelphia native, was not available for comment either. He canceled a speech in Cleveland last night for personal reasons. He was scheduled to talk about problems in America’s poor black communities.

Cosby supporters denounced the allegations. “The allegation as I understand it is utterly preposterous and bizarre, coming one year after it was supposed to take place,” said Walter Phillips Jr., a Philadelphia attorney representing Cosby.
