Blog calls for ‘jihad’ in response to ‘Himpunan Bible’ hoax

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — An anonymous blog is calling for a “jihad” in response to a fake poster linking the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) to a “bible rally”, which it claimed would see attendees “bathe in the blood of Muslims”.

The Arabic word translates as “struggle” in English, though proponents of violence interpret it to mean “holy war”.

In a post on The Selangor Chronicle last Tuesday, the writer claimed that the rally would include PAS members, followers of other faiths as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community to jointly demand that the government return Malay- and Iban-language bibles seized from BSM earlier this year.

“This huge rally will unite all religious believers to fight and bathe in the blood of Muslims in the peninsula in Dataran Merdeka,” the blog said.

“The rally is said to get unusual funding from foreign agencies and organisations that see Islam as a threat and Muslims as a group of people that need to be made fools of and oppressed all the time,” it added.

The blog post featured a poster of the so-called “Himpunan Bible” rally at Dataran Merdeka in the capital city that will coincide with the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on Sunday.

“The call for jihad appears to have arrived for Muslims in this country!!!” said the blog.

KLGH has about 500 churchgoers and is currently the nearest church to Dataran Merdeka.

PETALING JAYA: The KL Gospel Hall (KLGH) and Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) both denied their involvement in a peace walk that is supposed to take place this Sunday from the grounds of KLGH to Dataran Merdeka.

This event was supposedly organised as a protest against the threats of Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) to destroy the 321 Bibles seized by Jais from BSM earlier this year.

“We did not organise this, nor did we know of the existence of the poster that had been circulated nationwide on Facebook,” said a KLGH spokesman.

The Bahasa Malaysia poster has been circulating on Facebook calling for a “Bible Rally” (Perhimpunan Bible), claiming that the event is organised by BSM.

The spokesman told FMT that a police report will be made soon and a statement will be released as soon as possible to dispel the misinformation spreading on the Internet.

No Himpunan Bible taking place, online banner a hoax, says church

The Gospel Hall church in Kuala Lumpur is concerned for the safety of its members and staff given that their premises has been named as the starting point of a “peaceful rally” dubbed “Himpunan Bible” planned for this Sunday.

A spokesman for the church said that given that the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) had clarified that they had not planned any such rally as stated in a banner being circulated on the Internet, the church planned to lodge a police report on the matter tomorrow.

“The  information being circulated is totally untrue and malicious.

“As far as we are concerned, there is no rally planned in our premises,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

The hoax rally is purportedly said to be in protest against threats by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) to dispose of the 321 Bibles that were seized by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) from BSM on January 2.

‘Himpunan Bible’ not organised by us, BSM says

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 ― The Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) today denied any involvement in the peace rally this Sunday to protest the Selangor religious authorities’ plan to destroy the over 300 bibles confiscated over six months ago.

Referring to a poster of the event being circulated on social media, BSM’s general secretary Reverend Dr Simon Wong insisted in a statement here that the society has not arranged for any rallies at Dataran Merdeka this weekend.

“I’d like to inform the public that BSM has nothing to do with the rally and BSM has not called for any Himpunan Bible as purported in the poster,” Wong said.

According to the poster sighted by The Malay Mail Online, participants are expected to march from the Gospel Hall Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Hang Jebat to Dataran Merdeka.

When contacted, church elder Jimmy Chok also denied having any knowledge of the rally.
