Dear The Real Singapore,
Just thought you might be interested in this. I am a Malay Singaporean working in the UK. A UK Political party is protesting that over 200 Subway stores is removing Ham and Bacon from their menu and will be changing the store to Halal to accomodate for the growing muslim community in the UK.
The protest message which I shared below might sound very xenophobic and anti-muslim but actually you can also look at it from another perspective. Bacon and Ham has been a traditional meal and culture of the British for hundreds of years. For them, you can’t start a day without having Bacon and eggs for their breakfast.
It is like banning Chicken Rice or Chicken Satay from our food menu because a foreigner religion forbids them from eating chicken. (This is just an analogy. Sorry i am really bad at analogy) Are Singaporeans ready to give up their favourite food?
But yes, these are the problems that comes with huge amount of foreign immigrations. The locals will have to change their norms and food culture to accomodate for the immigrants eventually when their numbers is large enough.
Do you think UK Subway stores should be made Halal? I personally would love it since I am a muslim and I love subway (healthy food you know). But I wouldn’t be offended if there isn’t much Halal food there anyway since I am a foreigner living there.
