Baby rescued after floating a kilometre out to sea in an inflatable seat. |

A 10-month-old girl has been rescued from the water after floating a kilometre from the beach she was visiting with her family in Turkey.

The Ilgin family were at the beach in the Turkish town of Küçükkuyu for a day out when they placed daughter Melda in the water in an inflatable seat.

They didn’t notice the strong northern winds were taking their child into the open sea, in the direction of the Greek island of Lesbos, KBGN News reported.

By the time the family realised she was no longer with them and raised the alarm she was too far away for beachgoers to rescue her. Baby Melda was a kilometre from shore when the coastguard then reached her.

Video shows the coastguard vessel pulling alongside the small inflatable raft; rescuers then dive into the water and pull her to safety.

KOTA KINABALU: A mother whose sleeping son was locked inside her running vehicle, refused to break the car window until she was given RM200.

According to a witness, the woman left her son, believed to be seven or eight years old, inside the car while she and her daughter, about five, went down to a restaurant at Bandaran Berjaya in the city at noon Saturday.

“I was eating inside the restaurant and saw her go down. After a while, I saw the woman trying to open the car door by picking the lock but she failed,” said the witness, who only wanted to be known as Hiew.

A crowd gathered and advised the woman to break the window to get her son out but she refused to do so.

It was only after two men allegedly gave her RM100 each that she allowed them to break the window.

The boy, who woke up from the noise, was unhurt in the incident.

Brothers taken on terror ride

PETALING JAYA: A nine-year-old boy and his three-month-old brother were taken on a terror ride by a carjacker before they were forced out of the car about 5km from where he took the vehicle.

Mohd Naqiudin Rashid and Mohd Taqif were left in the blue Proton Gen-2 with the engine running after their mother Karniyurtini Ishak, 35, took two of their siblings to their babysitter’s house in Puchong Perdana at 7.10am yesterday.

When she came out of the house, she saw her car being driven away with the boys inside.

She ran after the vehicle but only managed to get as far as Sekolah Kafa Integrasi Madrasatul Ikhwan, about 500m away, where she has been a religious teacher for the past 13 years.

About 40 minutes later, while she was still wailing over the abduction of her sons, her tears turned to those of joy when a man brought them back to her.

Naqiudin told police that the carjacker was thin, tall and wore a secondary school uniform.

Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Ramli said the man pointed a penknife at the boy and told him to carry his brother out of the car.

“He threatened to kill both of them if he did not,” he said, adding that the suspect got away with Karniyurtini’s handbag, two mobile phones and her identification documents.
