KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching today asserted that remarks such as a minister’s advice for women to dress “shabbily” to avoid crime was why they were reluctant to report sexual assaults.
Citing the case of the robbery-and-rape in Puchong last week, Teo said the victim only reported that she was attacked nearly five days after the incident despite the extensive news coverage beforehand.
“The reality is, only one in 10 sexual abuse victims ever report. Unhelpful and idiotic comments like Tengku Adnan’s make most of them to be too embarrassed or ashamed of the incident to admit it,” she said in a statement.
She also questioned why Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor chose to comment on a woman’s appearance when she expressed concern about public safety during a National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue session in Bandar Tun Razak Wednesday.
Teo also pointed out that Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is leading the TN50 dialogues, previously wrote that “no one should be stupid enough to suggest that sexual harassment or crimes are the fault of the women for what they wear”.
She then urged Khairy to “educate” his Cabinet colleague, and for police to investigate Tengku Adnan for sexual harassment.

Tengku Adnan, famously known as Ku Nan, said this to a woman who was expressing her concerns about public safety during a Tranformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) dialogue in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, reported Malaysiakini.
While the woman, who was concerned about the safety of her two daughters, hoped that the government would improve security, Ku Nan thought it was best to comment on the woman’s appearance

“Recently, there have been many robberies and kidnapping, I feel scared when I walk around my area. Even in shopping malls, people disturb me, even security guards disturb me,” the woman was reported as saying by Malaysiakini.
She identified herself as a member of Federal Territories Puteri UMNO.
To which, Ku Nan told the woman that, “It’s because you’re so beautiful. The next time you go out, wear more comot (shabby) clothes.”
The woman laughed at Ku Nan’s sexist remarks, which had made the audience attending the TN50 event to cheer and applause

Malaysiakini also reports that while the woman was speaking, some of the audience members were heard doubting her experience of feeling unsafe while others complimented her looks.

Tengku Adnan should be given another FOOT IN MOUTH Award for saying, “The Federal Government is NOT OBLIGED to assist Fire victims in constituencies held by Pakatan Rakyat.”
This happened after a fire in Sentul.

Fires broke out in Kampung Chubadak and Kampung Puah Bahagia in Sentul earlier this month, on Aug 8 and Aug 10, destroying some 50 houses and leaving 300 people homeless.
Tian Chua…said that the victims have been upset since a visit by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor this morning.
According to him, although Tengku Adnan handed RM800 to each family during his visit, the minister also told the victims that the aid was not an obligation for the federal government because the victims came from a constituency that is under the opposition.
“The people are quite upset because Tengku Adnan said the government didn’t have to give the aid anyway, because the area is under the opposition,” added Tian Chua, who is a PKR vice-president.

‘Women like property’ wins sexism award
Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Yaakob emerged winner in the Foot in Mouth category in the Aiyoh… What Lah?! 2014 awards for comparing women to property when defending the assessment hike for properties in Kuala Lumpur last year.
The award, which was decided based on voting, was announced in a Petaling Jaya stand-up comedy last night by Miss Ribena Berry, the stage name for playwright Jo Kukathas.
To Tengku Adnan’s credit, he did attempt to make amends by apologising but later went on to explain he did not mean women were property but that if a house were to look nice, it needed make-up like how women groom themselves.
“I think next time don’t apologise-lah. He has his foot very down in his mouth,” said Miss Ribena, to laughter from the floor.
Tengku Adnan, who received an overwhelming 71 percent of 1,079 votes for the award, was not available to accept the unflattering award which was one among seven categories.
The award is aimed at highlighting sexist, misogynistic, homophobic or transphobic statements by public figures or entities but more importantly is aimed at holding them accountable for such remarks in a tongue-in-cheek way.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has come under fire from female Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians for comparing property values with that of cosmetics for women, with the MPs asking him to be given “gender education”.
PKR’s Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin and DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok both made the call through separate statements today.
“Tengku Adnan is severely in need of gender education judging from his analogy to equate women to properties,” Zuraida said, while stating that she can only “imagine the amount of make up worn by his family members”.
“Is Tengku Adnan a cosmetics salesman or a minister?” she asked.

Amidst the furor over having to pay higher property assessment fees in Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor used a rather off-colour analogy to justify the increase.
“If you enhance your property, it is the same as women. If you don’t wear make up, the price is cheaper, right?
