No foul play in Briton’s death
BY T.N ALAGESH – 11 JUNE 2014 @ 8:04 AM
KUANTAN: FOUL play has been ruled out in the death of British backpacker Gareth Huntley, whose body was discovered on the banks of Sungai Mentawak at Kampung Juara in Pulau Tioman on June 4.
Pahang police chief Datuk Saifuddin Abdul Ghani said based on forensic information, the department had concluded there were no criminal elements in the incident.
“This is based on the findings of an autopsy conducted at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA). There are no injuries on Huntley’s body.
“Police personnel, who searched the area, also did not recover anything suspicious.
“So far, there is no evidence of foul play,” he said after launching a blood donation campaign jointly organised by the police and Armed Forces here yesterday.

Cops: Briton died more than three days before discovery of body
KUANTAN: Briton Gareth David Huntley had been dead for more than three days before his body was discovered.
Pahang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said the initial post-mortem report on the 34-year-old’s remains revealed that he had died “at least three days and above” before he was found in the Mentawak River on June 4.
He, however, said the cause of death was still undetermined according to the hospital and needed further investigation.
On foreign press reports, which insinuated that Huntley was murdered, SDCP Sharifuddin said the police were not interested in such speculations.
“Our findings and process of investigation are all according to the law,” he told reporters after launching a blood donation drive here on Tuesday.

Gareth Huntley’s family face two month wait for cause of death
Malaysian officials say it will take up to eight weeks to establish how a British man whose body was found on a jungle trail died
By Dean Nelson, Kuala Lumpur
7:43PM BST 08 Jun 2014
The family of Gareth Huntley, the British accountant found dead last month on a jungle track on a Malaysian “paradise” island, face a two month wait to find out how he died, officials have said.
…
The initial post-mortem failed to reach a conclusion on the cause of death, and another pathologist has now been called in to give a second opinion.
British officials had been told the process could be completed in a few days but earlier today they were warned it is now expected to take two months.
Officials said they had been advised this was normal in cases where the body had deteriorated significantly.

IS IT TRUE THAT HIS THROAT WAS SLIT?
A tour guide on the island, who asked not to be named, said: “Some of the beach chalet owners have been told by police that his throat had been cut.”
Hoever, Kuantan CID chief SAC Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad denies that there was a fight, or that Gareth’s throat was cut, or that there were any injuries to indicate foul play.

Police deny reports dead Briton fought before going missing
PETALING JAYA, June 9 — Kuantan CID chief SAC Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad denied reports published by British dailies Sunday Telegraph and Daily Mirror claiming police were investigating the possibility that British citizen Gareth David Huntley was involved in a fight shortly before he went missing on Pulau Tioman last month.
Zakaria said the allegations were untrue and the statements obtained from witnesses on the island were not as reported by the website.
“None of the witnesses mentioned saw him fighting with another foreigner on the island. Most of the facts in their report were completely different from the information we obtained in our investigations,” he said.
Sunday Telegraph also reported one of the island’s tour guides said police told several chalet owners that Huntley was found with his throat slit.
Zakaria denied this, adding the post-mortem report revealed there was no cuts or other form of injuries on Huntley’s body.
“This led us to believe there was no foul play leading to his death.”
He said police were waiting for the chemistry report before they can confirm the cause of death.

WAS HE MURDERED?
Pahang Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zakaria Ahmad confirmed that police were looking at the possibility that foul play had led to Huntley’s death.
Village chief Ab Razib Ab Awang told the Daily Telegraph that most locals believed something sinister had happened to Huntley.
“I am not sure what actually happened but after three days of searching, the locals believed Huntley was not lost in the jungle.
“They should know because they are experts. There are rumours that Huntley had been involved in a fight with another foreigner.”

Briton might have been murdered on Pulau Tioman, says paper
Pahang police are not ruling out the possibility that British accountant Gareth David Huntley might have been murdered, the Daily Telegraph reported today.
The English daily said Huntley may have been involved in a fight shortly before he disappeared on May 27 on Pulau Tioman.
“There have been claims by local tour guides on Pulau Tioman that Huntley’s throat had been slit,” it said.
Yesterday, Huntley’s family thanked everyone who had helped to find him.
“There are no words that can capture the devastation we feel right now; no words that can capture the kindness, warmth and spirit that Huntley exuded; no words that can describe the void he will leave in all of the lives he touched,” the family said.
Pahang Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zakaria Ahmad visited Pulau Tioman yesterday.
A team of detectives and forensic personnel also combed the cordoned-off spot where Huntley’s body was discovered.

ON TIOMAN ISLAND: FOUND DEAD!!!

TIMELINE: SEARCH FOR MISSING UK VOLUNTEER
Tuesday May 27: Gareth Huntley, 34, from London, goes on a trek to visit a waterfall in Tioman Island, off the south eastern coast of Malaysia’s mainland.
He leaves in the morning and tells friends at the headquarters of a nearby charity project where he is volunteering that he will return by 2pm the same day. He fails to come back so a group goes out to search for him, checking various routes to the waterfall which is 6km away.
Wednesday May 28: A further search also proves fruitless. According to fellow volunteer Charles Fisher the police are contacted in the afternoon.
He says: ‘They sent a couple of members of the police force along to have a look but didn’t go far or look very much – they were just sort of assessing the situation.’
Thursday May 29: A group of volunteers embark on another search, while a group from the local community also look for Mr Huntley deep into the jungle.
The police are ‘no longer physically looking’, Mr Fisher says. ‘I think they were arranging for a search party but nothing happened.’
Friday May 30: Janet Southwell, Mr Huntley’s mother, calls on the authorities to do more to search for him.
She says: ‘He has been missing for four days now, and as yet I have had no contact from any official agency advising me as to the progress of the search.’
Saturday May 31: A friend of Mr Huntley, Kyle Neo Kai Fu, who lives locally, says: ‘The idea that there is a proper professional search going on is laughable. There are five police, in one boat, and nobody is in control.
‘The most likely scenario is that Gareth is injured in a ravine, with a broken leg – and we are running out of time.’
Ms Southwell makes a direct plea to Prime Minister David Cameron, urging him to ‘make one phone call to help my missing son’.
Sunday June 1: Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, who is in Malaysia, speaks to the country’s defence minister. He is assured that the authorities will do all they can to find Mr Huntley and they have already deployed significant assets including dogs, boats and a helicopter.
Mr Huntley’s girlfriend, Kit Natariga, arrives on the island and warns that ‘time is running out and we need action as soon as possible’.
Monday June 2: Mr Huntley’s mother also arrives on the island to support the search effort. She says she wants to see the area for herself and ‘get a feel for where he’s lost’.
His brother, Mark, says there are 103 people searching, alongside several helicopters and speedboats.
David Cameron speaks to Malaysia’s prime minister Najib Razak to thank him for the extensive efforts of the search teams.
Wednesday June 4: Police searching for Mr Huntley find a body.
According to local reports the body, which is not confirmed as the missing Briton, is found in a pond a few yards from a kayak storage unit near the Juara Turtle Project where Mr Huntley had been working.

Rescuers: So close, yet so far
PULAU TIOMAN: More than 100 rescuers spent nine days scouring and camping out in 850 sq km of dense jungle in search of missing Briton Gareth Huntley.
The extensive search also deployed the use of helicopters, marine boats and K9 units.
None of them had an inkling that a body was lying in a river just a few metres from their quarters at the Lagoon chalet near the Juara Turtle Park here.
“So frustrating, right? Of course we do not know for sure (the identity of the body), but still, there is a body.
“How did we miss it?” said a high ranking officer involved in the search and rescue efforts.

PETALING JAYA: The mother of a British wildlife volunteer missing in Tioman is expected to arrive in Malaysia on Monday to join the search for her son, according to Daily Mirror.
Gareth David Huntley, 34, from London, has not been seen since Tuesday on Tioman Island where he was doing volunteer work at the Juara Turtle Project.
The report quoted his mother, Janet Southwell, as saying that she feared her son might be injured and unable to move, and called for British Prime Minister David Cameron’s to help.
In her open letter, she urged Cameron to “make one phone call” to the country’s leader “before time runs out”.
“We need boots on the ground, search teams and dogs so that we can bring our son back alive,” she said, adding that not enough was being done in the search as the family wants “real help”.
Southwell said it was out of character for him to go missing.
“He’s got an exploring nature, he’s intelligent, and hopefully his ability to apply himself will get him through this.
“He was on a break from work, he was due to start a new job in Singapore next week. It’s totally out of character for him to go missing, he just would not do it. He knows there are too many people who care and love him,” she said.
