The video made reference to diamond rings, branded handbags and real estate in New York, which viewers may associate with Rosmah Mansor’s penchant for luxury goods and her son, Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz’s 2012 purchase of an RM100 million apartment in New York.

Malaysiakini on Lim Ching Miau’s political stand

She said Malaysian artistes should enjoy freedom of expression as they are not puppets and can make up their own minds, and such rights should be respected.

This is a democratic country and we should live with the spirit of democracy, Lim said.

She had fought for and supported the opposition, she saidm, because she wanted to see a ‘two-party system’ established in the country.

The Penangite said she had grown up in a family where some of the members had joined Gerakan, and had listened to her relatives criticising the opposition parties, especially DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.

However, when she noticed the people were still struggling to make a living and were unable to cope with the recent price hikes, something boiled up inside her and she decided to join civil society groups as well as fight to democratise the nation.

“My mother was especially worried with my involvement (in campaigning for Pakatan and social society groups), fearing that May 13 may recur, but I told her that when people are starving with empty stomachs and turn into hungry ghosts, they’re afraid of nothing,” she said.

Born and bred in Penang, Lim Ching Miau or more known by her stage name Miau Miau, portrays a pitifully lonely woman in one of Tropfest SEA’s shortlisted films ‘Chicken’ produced by another Penangite from Garang Pictures. Professing to be eternally 18 years old, she’s been acting for more than a decade now in films such as ‘Ice Kacang Puppy Love’, ‘Happy Family’ and ‘KL Zombie’. What’s more is, she’s also a licensed Malaysian tour guide. Here, she shares with us her favourite spots in Penang before the Tropfest SEA 2014 event on Jan 25 at the Esplanade.

Is the local entertainment industry ready for big talents?

TRUE to her light-hearted nature, Lim Ching Miau, or more popularly known to her fans as “Miau Miau”, points out the irony of her name: “Did you know that in Chinese, ‘Ching’ means quiet and ‘Miau’ means slim?” Viewers who have followed her career would know that both descriptions are, well, less than accurate.

The Ice Kacang Puppy Love breakout star is known in the industry for her vivacious personality and her curvy figure, which she is proud of.

Lim admits that being heavy-set, she has been typecast to portray goofy roles in slapstick comedies. Surprisingly, though, the 31-year-old actress wouldn’t have it any other way.

Asked if she feels bigger actresses are pigeonholed into portraying certain roles only, Lim responds: “Let’s say, there is a love story about a handsome, 1.93m-tall hunk chasing after a fat girl. In reality, maybe one out of 1,000 girls can land a guy like that. But the other 999?”

Ultimately, Lim doesn’t want to give viewers false hope. “As an actress, you can’t lie to your audience. It’s my moral responsibility to make sure my roles reflect real-life,” says Lim.
